  1. actually i thought q3 was pretty good. certainly not stupid. i like that you didn't even attempt to answer it.

surely music and lyrics should be prepared to tackle tough issues like domestic abuse and one of those ways to tackle it is satirical or by making a joke of it. surely wifebeaters music is the punk version of springtime for hitler and nothing more.

The guy who wrote Springtime For Hitler was being serious though  (well, within the film)

At the end of the day, this is all very typical of aberdeen-music. The ghostofcain initially raised a valid, if ill-informed point, then before you know it, he/she is jumped up by all the usual suspects...ironically advocating free speech. And before you know it, a potentially worthwhile poster is put off posting for fear of the lynch mob and will be forever hampered by a negative rep that he'll likely never be able to turn green.

Racism is a tough issue, but does anyone believe starting a satirical band is the way forward? If so, go forth and start-up CoonHater and show racism the red card once and for all.

Wifebeater was a tragically unfunny band by people who should be old enough to know better. And I wasn't in the slightest bit offended by them, but I do think the world is an infinitely better place without them. This whole Labour thing is an utter, utter joke though

but Wifebeater were certainly not

  2. I seem to recall she seemed impressed by Kilau's interviewing technique of asking what the interviewee's best Scrabble score was.

I think if someone asked me that question in a job interview I'd rather punch them in the face than get the job.

 Thats disgusting. Not the punching, I'm fully behind that. But the question...just...Kilau :(

Still love the wee place though.

  3. Happiness Is A Warm Gun (White Album)

    I'm Only Sleeping (Revolver)

I've Just Seen A Face (Help!)

    She's Leaving Home (Sgt Peppers)

    I'm So Tired (White Album)

As with everyone else, thats just of the here and now. Even then there is some utterly criminal omissions. By fuck what a band.

I love the way 90% of people's choices so far have been songs that you'd never hear on the radio (and you'll hear a dozen Beatles songs on the radio a week) and no-one has a list remotely similar to anothers, yet I don't think anyone is thinking 'what the fuck' to anyones inclusions.

I have a completely rational hatred of anyone who doesn't love The Beatles...its ruined a number of friendships and relationships.

*edit* Noticing that a few folk have put in covers and since I am dying to add to that list in anyway...

Top 5 Covers by The Beatles

    1. You Really Got A Hold On Me

    2. Twist and Shout

    3. Money

    4. Words of Love

    5. Please Mister Postman

  4. There's a guy that goes round Tesco stores (and maybe other supermarkets...), stealing TV's. He asks for the largest, most expensive HD TV that particular store has (often the most expensive item in the shop). He'll get it in it's box from non-food peeps and put it in his trolley.

He'll walk around the supermarket for a wee while, then go to the front door and say something along the lines of, "my girlfriend/wife/brother etc, is doing a bit more shopping, but I was hoping to put this in the car just now", he'll produce a receipt of some kind and wave it about a bit. Because of the security tag on the box or within the box, he'll then say the whole thing won't fit in his boot, and can he just take the tele boxless.

Supermarket staff being as they are, accept all this and in the case of our shop, haul folk off check-outs and get the security guy to help carry the TV to this guy's car. He drives off with free television.

It took our store a good couple of days to realise this had happened, I think it's timed a wee bit before sales are totalled for the week/month/period etc, just guessing though. Managers in particular, were a wee bit embarassed, and the staff that helped him were "re-trained". :)

I laughed lots and lots and lots when I heard all of this.

You don't work in the Tesco in Torry do you? It happened there as well

Treader has a funny story regarding alleged stealing...

  6. I really like Buddy Holly, but I could hardly call what he did revolutionary for the time compared to loads of other artists.

I don't understand why he was percieved as so different to what many other rock'n'roll/skiff acts were doing?

I'm not challenging anyone, I'm asking for different perspectives so I can perhaps understand better,

I guess he was the first person to take the 'rock' format of the time (which more or less consisted of 12 bar blues songs set to a similar, rocky beat) and expand the instrumentation, harmonies and melodies to what was your classic rock sound at the time. I'm pretty drunk right now so probably not explaining it the best but it seems he progressed beyond 50s rock in a matter of months and moved onto modern day pop song structures that still exist today, despite him being limited to only 18 months or so in recorded music.

Regardles of whether you subscribe to the true innovator stuff, his music still stands up today. The production is remarkable good for late 50s...a lot of which is due to the utterly fantastic arrangements of the Crickets, which in turn owe a lot to the fact Buddy was an utterly fantastic guitarist - far better than he is ever giving credit for (simply because he was more recognised as a songwriter/vocalist)

    ...something like that X)X)

  7. You need to reset the output if you've been using it on a Scart connection. Hold down the on button on the front with everything connected up and it on the correct channel on the TV until you hear a couple of beeps and the output settings should change and you should get a picture once the handshake is successful.

    Hope that helps.

Thats what I had to do when I had the same problem.

  8. The likes of Rave On and Oh Boy are fantastic rockers.

My fave would probably be It Doesn't Matter Anymore, I love the string arrangement.

The musical Buddy is always a good night on and although I haven't seen it for about 20 years the film The Buddy Holly Story is also damn good with a pre-bonkers Gary Busey doing a great job in the title role.

Always worth remembering that the late, great Waylon Jennings was due to be on the plane that night but gave up his space. Gulp.

Have it on DVD and its brilliant. Remember seeing Buddy the musical when I was a real young un but it was still pretty powerful stuff.

  9. Strangely I've listening to almost solely Buddy Holly in the last fortnight with no idea of this anniversary. A true great. He innovated more in his short, short years in the business than anyone has done since. I think popular music would've taken a completely different route had he not died when he did.

Favourite Buddy Holly songs? Mines are Think It Over and Words of Love.

    :(

  10. I have tried so hard to get a job in both places but im not sure what im doing wrong. Any information on the best route to apply and when would be great?

    Cheers

My mate got a job in HMV cos he filled out the online application and performed well at the interview. I don't think there is any secret to it. Maybe they just don't like the cut of your jib?
