Stephen Posted July 18, 2005 Report Share Posted July 18, 2005 Laurel Aitkin, one of the men most responsible for developing ska as a style, died yesterday (July 17).Ska's Laurel Aitkin, 78, died in the early morning after suffering a heart attack. He died in Leicester, England's Glenfield Hospital following cardiac problems.Aitkin was essential in getting Jamaican music off the ground. One of his earliest singles, "Little Sheila" / "Boogie in my Bones," was the first release from Island Records, as well as the first Jamaican song to see commercial release in the United Kindgom. Alongside Desmond Dekker, Aitkin helped develop the first wave of Jamaican ska.Aitkin toured sporadically throughout his life, usually catching a tour during one of ska's many revivals.
