    Nothing last time i checked

Yep, currently vacant. Last in use by Viva Brazil which closed due to 'unacceptable' low sales.

The new Halfords AutoCentre on West North Street by Morrisons now have the signs up. Please not although this is the same company this branch is not a traditional store and operates as a servicing garage.

Was this a privately run venue or did it have council 'backing' ?  and where is it ?.

The Forum bar and club was privately owned by PB Devco which own various other venue's in the city such as "Babylon...The College...Soul...Soul Casino...The Bieldside Inn...Zen Oriental...Queen Vic...The Howff...So...Dizzy's". The staff from the adjoining restaurant 'The Stage Door' have been transferred to their new venture 'Dizzy's Restaurant'.

Location: The Forum was located just off Rosemount Viaduct on Skene Terrace across from the Central Library.

Yeah, a lovely venue physically - we played in there years ago in a battle of the bands type thing. I think Mercedes, or maybe they were Lady Mercedes won it, with a cover of a Stones song, despite the strict 'no covers' policy. So for that reason, I'm glad the place is struggling and I hop it burns to the ground.

Well it's not really struggling it's closing down.

  4. This is an old one but The Old Frigate Bar what a lovely pub. I was sitting upstairs and it's so cosy and a lovely break away from the student bars with no soul. A nice place to go but perhaps not on a pub crawl.

I visited this place before attending Wheatus at The Tunnels.

Justice Mill Lane was a hellhole in the early-mid 00s, all the really chavvy places all in a row. Bex Bar, Fever, Charlies etc. Is it still as bad?

Trying to remember the names of some of the others.

The area has seen major redevelopment in recent years with a Travelodge and Park Inn by Radisson being built where Satrosphere used to be. Across from that both the old Capitol theatre and Bells bar buildings have been demolished and are currently being rebuilt into offices.

Pub wise O'Donoghue's are still there but have moved along the road towards Holburn Street. Their old building has since been demolished with the Capitol building going into where it used to be.

Franklyns is currently vacant. The company behind Club Tropicana and Private Eyes previously ran it as Vogue 90s nightclub but this moved into where Riley's Chapel Street was and is now part of an expanded Club Tropicanna.

Bardot's is there and open as is The Justice Mill. So overall there are less chavs since that end is now geared towards an older clientele and is therefore quite quiet.

The Rig has turned into Nox nightclub which is a high class club for young people who are up there own arse. I have not been in. Further along Langstane Place there is the area where Prohibition, Paramount, Soul Casino and Jam Jar (previously Tonic) are located. This area is really popular with young people but if you want the most chaviest area then that is Belmont Street there are good places here and bad. It seems there  was a shift at some point with people moving from Justice Mill Lane to Belmont Street.

So overall Justice Mill Lane is dead at the weekend with people mostly now being around Langstane Place and Belmont Street.

Do you mean Bardot's behind the gate just up from Franklyns? If so it was a kareoke bar last time i was there, links to Cotton Club up on Union Street (if that's still there as well).

Yep that place, the female bouncers wear balaclava type things showing only there eyes. Being wear it is I have kept a safe distance.

The Forum was a funny place,  I went to a few events there over the years, Vegas Nights, Salsa nights etc and it was always really busy but I always balked at the door price (£10) and the bar prices were unbelievably expensive. I also saw Karloff and The Rocketeers play there once, which was weird. It's a good size venue, could be ace if someone used it for gigs.

Looking at the facebook page it still looks alive but won't be for very long. An either 'For Sale' or 'To Let' sign has appeared on the building and it's website deleted. I guess it must be just running out the remaining planned events.

I don't remember it ever having a heyday per se, I never really went in to it much, except to go to Enigma or Chi Bar on the top floor. Is that still there? That was a nice place. Good food or a decent bar just for a beer. I had a first date there once.

No, Chi closed down a few years ago. It turned into another type of bar restaurant but I think it's offices now.

Oh, I forgot to say The Forum and Stage Door Restaurant have both closed down. The staff from Stage Door were transferred to the new Dizzy's Restaurant. I was only ever in The Forum once for The Trickery magic show and it looked really nice inside. It's a shame that it has closed but it was so underused with the odd event every few months. Gavrillo club night was in there before moving to The Underground and dying. It's sad but in the current climate it looks like it will be empty for some time or used for some other purpose.

The Tunnels is still alive and have no draft options. They really had pretty much folded but had a revamp and now have regular club nights. Hopefully this stays alive but like everything now-a-days the market seems to be shrinking for going out options.

Build a bear workshop also closed. I remember getting a bear from there when I was quite young back when it was called 'Bear Factory', Oh well 2002-2016.

Is there anything left in the Academy?

Shop wise Enigma and Concept (previously 2 units now down to 1), Jack Wills (enter by Schoolhill). Costa Coffee in there seems to do good business especially with Robert Gordon College pupils. Bar wise Old Schoolhouse (enter via Little Belmont Street), Rye and Soda, Bosin. Restaurant wise Nando's (enter via Belmont Street) and Wagamama (which is closing down). There is a new Cuban bar from the same company as Revolution set to open where Wagamama will vacate.

Did The Academy ever have a heyday? What was in it when it opened?

  10. The Garage are getting new flooring put in despite the club seeming underused. It was thought it was go up in a insurance claim further down the line but this means there is now hope.

Underdog which opened where Snafu used to be is worth a look. It was busy when I went past on Cartel Tuesday's. Brewdog bottles for £2.50.

If anyone was wondering where people go on Tuesday's when out now-a-days. It's Carwash Tuesday's at Underground as Rascals at Babylon. Prohibition normally does good business too.

Has Aberdeen been Starbucksed to death yet? There's a new Starbucks opening up in Dublin this week which is the 49th Starbucks in Dublin and the 21st in the city centre. It's fucking nuts. On Westmoreland Street there are two literally across the road from each other.

    starb-1.png

Blanchardstown shopping centre has 4 Starbucks.

Starbucks are located in the following locations: St Nicholas Centre, Upperkirkgate, Union Street, Union Square, Holburn Junction, Old Aberdeen (University of Aberdeen), Prime Four Business Park. So 7 locations. They are also planning to open a Drive Thru Starbucks in Altens.
