  1. Simply Red

That must be top trumps surely?

For sheer badness not much is really in the same league but the following bands are pretty despicable:

    The Beautiful South

    Texas

    The Brand New Heavies

All to be featured on a new compilation album called "Dad's mediocre music mid-life crisis".

  2. Robert Knight seems to be one of the people on here not here for a fight, and trying to express real opinions about different people's music/songs etc - then there's his exact opposite - Nefarious C who has a right go at him about it.

Thanks, to give Nefarious his due he did change his original post and apologised to me for the way he'd expressed his opinion.

Hmm. I think I'll just buy something I like. To say that we should all buy 'independent' music, purely because it's independent, is as bad as hoovering up pish from the charts. Just because music is 'independent'. doesn't mean it will 'enrich your soul.' It might be crap.

It would be as bad, but purely by the nature of independent music I don't think it's possible.

Anyway, I don't think you should buy something purely because it's independent, I just think if you're going to "buy into" music it should be on your own terms and not because of a direct reaction to mass media coverage and blanket marketing.

  3. You're misinterpreting what I'm saying and allowing yourself to become irritated with an argument I'm not making.

I don't care whether the X Factor single is #1 or not. Let it be #1.

What I'm saying is, to the people who are trying to combat The X Factor by buying a RATM single you're not really helping matters.

Forget the Xmas #1 spot and buy something you really care about.

  4. Support independant music.

Forget the Xmas number 1. It is irrelevant, nothing more than a mere statistic for children, industry bosses and people who know or care painfully little about music.

If you must buy something, please buy something by an exciting independent or smaller artist, not worried about chart positions or billboard charts but knowing that your soul will be enriched by the experience and that your hard earned money will go to someone who truly deserves your support.

Anyway, if you search Forget Xmas #1 on facebook I've started a group for it. Maybe a bit late in the day but I'd like to spread the message and stop people lining Simon Cowell's pockets even further.

    Cheers.

  5. just because i play in a band that doesnt write songs about politics or climate change etc doesnt make me any less punk than you

Well... technically it probably does. Fraser seems to embody a lot more of the characteristics which are traditionally associated with the word "punk" than you do. His disaffected anger with the world at large is far more punk than any personality trait you exhibit.

Moving on, a quick check (see top of page) confirms that the competition fudge hold is "best punk act", and not "most punk act", or each year a crusty busker stinking of pish and Tennets super would no doubt scuffle away with one of Aberdeen's most closely coveted prizes in one hand and his scabby wee rollie-smoking dog in the other.

Sadly, neither crusty busker man nor Fraser's band Grader have been short listed for the competition this year which may help to go some way towards explaining the disenchantment of the latter.

In short, it doesn't matter who's the most punk because that's not what the competition is about and even if it were it's certainly not a point worth arguing with the not-even-rans.

i think youll find weve played a shit load more than E2V

That'll be the "most gigs played award" sewn up then.

This could be a good year for you guys. ;)

  6. We are not allowed to sell alcohol to someone we suspect is going to give it to someone underage, and if you don't look over 25 and can't produce ID then we need to treat it as if they are under 18. So if you are with someone buying alcohol and cannot provide ID we assume the person buying it is going to give it to/share it with the "underager" it seems kind of silly, but then if it wasn't in place then we would have 15 year olds walking up with any tom, dick or harry they could find to buy them alcohol and we wouldn't be able to do anything about it. It's just another one of those things here the minority of people ruin it for the majority.

That policy will only ever work on any one individual once as the next time the underager will just wait outside the shop. I see what you're trying to do but you don't exactly need to be a criminal mastermind to figure this one out. The silliest part of it all is that people who are most likely to flout the law are the people who are most likely to know about it, meanwhile the ignorant majority are inconvenienced for (in my opinion) no good reason.

I agree with everything you're saying, but I'm just pointing out that this is one of these company policies thick to the brim with woolly-minded good intentions that doesn't actually accomplish anything significant other than inconveniencing genuine customers.

  7. There was a story recently about a woman doing her weekly shop with her young (think she was about 10 or 11) daughter and she was refused a bottle of wine because her daughter was under 18.

It's weird that you brought that up, because that would have been my argument - "What if a mum came in with a child would you refuse her a bottle of wine?"

But obviously the answer is, "In some cases yes".

All of this smacks a little bit too much of the thought police.

They don't have an obligation to sell you booze (or anything else).

Very true, but it is their sole reason for existence.

I think the supermarkets are delivering a very strong message to the consumer here; leave the kids and your under-age pals in the car.

  8. Home recording, Done some live sound at tunnels,

Need more? PM instead of thread spamming,

Oh, good stuff. I don't know who you're learning the art of sound engineering from, but you come across as having attended soundian's finishing school of etiquette and decorum for boys. If you're even half as good as him behind the sound desk that's got to be a good thing.

I would add that you seem a bit overly angry with life in general, which is your right, but the problem with that is when something actually rightly annoys you in the future you no one will be able to tell the blindest bit of difference.

Anyway, no need to reply to me in this thread, just PM me if you have anything further to say.

  9. Good on them in what way?

Good on them for motivating their fan base to vote.

its not as if most of these sign ups will contribute to the forum

    Most sign ups don't.

Last year. a bunch of people from my college class did the same for a band, where are those contributors now?

    I dunno, which band?
