  4. THE WAVE PICTURES AUGUST 14TH / THE TUNNELS 7.30PM 5.00 advance / 7.00 at door --------------------------------------------------------------- The Wave Pictures The Wave Pictures are David Tattersall (guitar), Franic Rozycki (bass) and Jonny ''Huddersfield'' Helm (drums). During their career The Wave Pictures have played at The Mofo Festival in Paris, at various venues in New York and across the UK. The Wave Pictures formed in 1998 when Franic and David lived in a village called Wymeswold. The band played with several drummers until Jonny became a permanent member in 2003. In the beginning the band learned to play together by covering Jonathan Richman songs but soon David was writing lots of original material. These songs along with a few covers comprise the albums More St. Less TV and Just Watch Your Friends Dont Get You, which were recorded at home over two days, using an old tape four-track. Following unsuccessful attempts to record in a studio with an unsympathetic producer, the band continued to record at home to keep a track of Davids prolific output. These recordings formed the next three albums The Airplanes At Brescia, The Hawaiian Open Mic Night and the recently released Sophie. The interest generated by these recordings has enabled The Wave Pictures to play shows all over the world with artists including Jeffrey Lewis and the aforementioned Herman Dune, who invited them to play at The Mofo Festival. Through playing gigs, sending CDs to people across the world, and word of mouth The Wave Pictures have gained a cult status and a small but devoted international following. Latest album and debut album for Moshi Moshi, "Instant Coffee Baby", was released on May 5th. It can be ordered from the Moshi Moshi shop. It includes the singles "I Love You Like A Madman" and "Strange Fruit For David". Quotes Not only did I appreciate his take-no-prisoners musical stylings but also the imaginative lyrical ideas I found mighty refreshing. This is a man who clearly harbours no ambition to be seen hobnobbing with Dido at the Met Bar and has opted instead to plough a righteous but lonely furrow. - Nick Lowe Nothing short of splendid, resplendent and heartbreaking. The future is now! - BSR Radio Okay, you guys. This is the deal. The Wave Pictures are despairingly good. Despairingly because they ain't signed and they don't have a huge following who send them flowers, photographs and panties. They should. - Hywel's review of The Wave Pictures in ROKU DISTRO fanzine Combine the song-writing genius of Jonathan Richman (plus a touch of his wondrousnaivety), the lo-fi humility of Herman Dune and a few guitar moments that Springsteen himself would be proud of, and you get close to the underexposed marvels on display here. Imagination, humour, melodies and chords, twangy basslines of beauty. These things will make you grin. They are a loveable band. The kind of band whose songs you put on all mixtapes, who you urge your friends to listen to. The kind of band you send panties to... 5. TEH VIVIANS SUNDAY 3RD AUGUST 7.30PM / 5.00 Formed in Edinburgh, August 2006, the Vivians were made by long term friends and strangers; Damon, Chris, Kit, Scott & John who are now based in London. With their "gives a fuck" attitude The Vivians do nothing by halves. This attitude may be reminiscent of "punk" although their music refreshingly takes influence from a broader musical spectrum. Twin guitars fighting one another for the rawest, catchiest riff over a disco beat and impassioned vocals of Damon Deville, creating the perfect musical concoction for their exhausting live performances. Such performances have earned them the reputation as being one of the hottest live bands around. The Vivians posses it all; a style, substance and sexual tension for you to listen to, drink to, dance to, fuck and snort glue to in a kind of marvellous beautiful craze that has almost been forgotten today. "The Vivians are the future... Divided We Stand is an anthem for us all" ...Daily Record "one of the best frontmen of the minute, with one of the best bands around... 10/10" ...Club NME "a must see" ...The Sun "Punk Rockin' Genius" ...Vic Galloway Radio 1 Scotland "Essentially, The Vivians are all about attitude. Their live performances exude the platoon mentality of The Clash and the unhinged, intense presence of The Voidoids. To top it off, they have the smouldering tunes that make you want to dance, fuck and fight simultaneously." ...The Skinny (Interview, May 2007)

  9. Thursday 13th December @ Moshulu JOHN POWER Johns new material may be of some surprise to fans of his previous bodies of work with The Las and Cast, because to all intent and purposes it seemed he had withdrawn from the music scene, appearing occasionally at bespoke intimate gigs, but in the main he had disappeared off the scene for a while. It appears this was all a necessary part of the process to get to be where he had to be at allowing the new material to develop organically and re-establish his voice and technique. Its closest to the music I listen to- its no longer about the youthful style where the tempo is faster the strokes are more considered crafted and temperate, and the dynamic now lies in the lyrics and form. I dont need to grip so hard and I can let go a bit more now and the guitar feels easier in my hand. Age: +14 www.johnpower.uk.com SUPPORT TBC 10 Tickets from : Ticketweb www.moshulu.net

Foals, along with their peers Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, have been the one of the most impressive, forward-thinking bands Oxford has had to offer over the last few years. After a small break, due to the loss of a band member, they're back with a new name, three new members and an adaptation of their previously irregular time signatures, angular guitar interplay and dissonance, to try and create the 'future of pop music'. 12. Wednesday 5th December @ Moshulu SONS AND DAUGHTERS adele was on tour with arab strap when she mentioned to david that she'd an idea for a band called sons and daughters and he said i'll do it and at the same time adele's friend ailidh was turning her dainty hand to any instrument she could pick up so they started recording onto 4 tracks but there was no band yet until adele meets scott right and he's got a guitar and he's an act called march of dimes which is good and soon they all start hanging out and chewing an idea called sons and daughters and before long a practice was booked and it wasn't rubbish then after hot-housing the tunes for a few months a band happened and they got a gig in the thirteenth note in glasgow using guitars mandolins pianos drums bass and tambourines. then what happened was loads of gigs with good bands and at the same time this new yorker called ben goldberg wanted to put out a record of some tunes on his ba da bing label after hearing some of the songs on a tape so the band got some money together and paid andy miller to do a good job on it in chem 19 which he did and it's called love the cup featuring seven tunes and it's twenty five minutes long. the band are currently making new tunes to play at gigs and to record and usually say yes so just ask speaking of which adele and ailidh would like new amps also scott would like a shiny new metal necked guitar and david would like some wires that don't explode every second gig. 13. Tuesday 4th December @ Moshulu SHAI HULUD Shai Hulud is well-known within the hardcore scene for their often complex compositions and misanthropic lyrics. Originally hailing from Florida, the band later moved up to Poughkeepsie, NY. The two mainstay members of Shai Hulud are considered to be Matt Fox (guitar), who writes most of the band's musical and lyrical output, and Matt Fletcher (originally guitar, but then moved on to bass), who assists in writing. After the release of 2003's That Within Blood Ill-Tempered and a number of tours going into the subsequent year, Shai Hulud and vocalist Geert Van Der Velde mutually decided it was for the best he leave the band. Acknowledging some people may misinterpret the parting as the end of Shai Hulud, the band came out on their homepage indicating that they would not be breaking up; instead, the band would change name to The Warmth of Red Blood and continue what had been started with Shai Hulud. At the same time, they also started requesting that anyone who considered themselves up for the challenge of taking over vocal duties record a demo of themselves performing the track "Whether to Cry or Destroy" (quite similar to what The Dillinger Escape Plan did when auditioning new vocalists). In March of 2006, the band announced they were abandoning the moniker 'The Warmth Of Red Blood' and keeping the name Shai Hulud. In August of 2006, the band signed with Metal Blade Records. Shai Hulud also have a side project named Zombie Apocalypse, whose sound can be summed up as a faster, more chaotic and more manic version of its mother band. It features Matt Fox, Matt Fletcher, Ronen Kaufman, and Greg Thomas. 15. Thursday 29th November @ Moshulu SILVERSTEIN One would be hard-pressed to come up with a more fitting title for Silverstein's new album than Arrivals & Departures. After all, this Canadian band sold over 300,000 of their previous release, Discovering The Waterfront, on the strength of word-of-mouth and a nonstop touring schedule that saw them crisscrossing the globe. The full-throated rock passion that pervades all 11 songs on Arrivals & Departures emphatically depicts a band that has...well, arrived. Silverstein is about to depart the realm of grassroots phenomenon to enter the stratosphere of critical mass success. It's been a long, but thrilling trip for this quintet, who came together in the Toronto suburb of Burlington, Ontario at the turn of the millennium. After putting out two of their own EPs, the band signed to Victory Records and released When Broken Is Easily Fixed, which raised eyebrows throughout North America as sales climbed well past 200,000. Showing no ill effects of any "sophomore jinx," Silverstein's follow-up Discovering The Waterfront did considerably better; now total Silverstein record sales are beyond a half-million. The band fueled that momentum by performing on a slew of major tours, from A Taste of Chaos and Warped in the States to the Give It A Name and Download festivals in England. They topped it all off with their first headlining tour of America-the sold-out Never Shave Again tour. 16. Wednesday 28th November @ Moshulu BRING ME THE HORIZON Bring Me the Horizon, five young British lads with a penchant for heavy. Essentially This is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For is an 18 minute mid nineties breakdown; four tracks of intense raging chugging and squealing, stop/starting and severe core riffing. Nary a second hand euro thrash riff to be found, nary a melodic sung chorus, all things about this genre that irritate me are devoid (well save for girls pants and backwards hair-cuts). I was sold on TIWTEOYSWMF after viewing a minute long promo clip on MySpace featuring the indomitable closing mosh to They Have No Reflection (which damn well better be a song about vampires) with live footage. I was sold on the sheer intensity of their attack, the stone cold passion with which they present their sound. A nonstop attack, the vocals never quit, the raspy screech and pit growling, gang screams and occasional spoken epitaphs, the power of these dudes does not stop, the violence does not cease until the last seconds of harried screaming (very reminiscent of a certain Acrid track) and the line I fucking love you . 21. Saturday 17th November @ Moshulu CAPTAIN In a musical era dominated by bands who seem to exist solely within highly specific camps - be it art rock, New York-style indie posturing or something similarly unappealing - Captain are a glorious anomaly. A rum bunch of five distinctly individual people, their music sounds quintessentially of itself. Consequently, Captain are very nearly unique, 2006's most handsome black sheep. "I've never felt particularly part of the scene," says the band's singer Rik Flynn, "whichever scene we happen to be talking about. It's not something I've ever set out to sidestep, it's just the way things are. Of course, I'm aware that this is something that can work against you, but right now, it seems to be working for us." He takes the cigarette he has been earnestly puffing away on from his mouth and blows a self-satisfied smoke ring. "And that pleases me enormously." Captain's music is joyful, clattering, full of divergent moodswings, the jubilant crescendoes of male/female vocal sparring and, just occasionally, the trill parp of a trumpet. Above all else, as Rik Flynn will tell you himself, the band's music is, "hopeful, emotional and euphoric. Whether it's melancholy or we're singing stories about people dying of cancer, we still want to cheer everybody up." And that they do with no little flair. Their debut album, This is Hazelville, produced by the legendary Trevor Horn (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, ABC) is a triumph, a record possessing the combustible energy of Arcade Fire with the theatrical thrum of Flaming Lips and the sheer exuberance of a six year-old anticipating Christmas. You may well have already heard their debut single Frontline. Well, its bug-eyed oh-oh-OH!s are typical of the band's ability to hypnotise. This is wonderfully involving music. The track highlights the fact that there's just no hiding from the system, I love the line, We have your DNA and your finger prints, on Monday you bought a table leg and on Tuesday Murray mints, very comical and serious all at the same time.
