  1. Guess I'm mostly going with people who've been around a while so have stood the test of time in the continuously impressive stakes.

    1. Mary Timony - Great in everything she's done from Autoclave in the early 90s, through Helium, through loads of underappreciated solo records to Wild Flag and Ex Hex.  Always distintive and trying different things.  Met her last year and she's also totally nice and entertaining too.

    2. Robert Pollard - Not sure I need to say much about Mr GBV.  Something like a couple of thousand songs to his name over 30+ years.  A lot of them are better than great.

    3. Rachel Grimes - Was in the 'indie classical' pioneers Rachels during the 90s and early 2000s and then has done some magnificent solo work in more recent years.  Always thought she was miles better than most other artists doing this sort of stuff.  Was also in the very good alt-country band King's Daughters and Sons and features on RM Hubbert's new album.  I see her name on a record and I know it'll be great.

    4. Malcolm Middleton - I could put Aidan Moffat but I'm not sure Malky gets as much credit for being consistently brilliant over twenty years.  Every record he puts out has several total gems on it.  That one he did the other year with David Shrigley was a laugh.

    5. Karin Dreijer Andersson - One half of the Knife and all of Fever Ray.  I don't know what she'll do next but it will be blistering.

I'm downplaying how good it is this year because I'm moving to Toronto in May so definitely won't be going. A better line-up than 2015 by miles, but they're still about 1-2 years behind Le Guess Who? I reckon. Everybody go to LGW. Top tips!: Selda and Islam Chipsy. Also, Downtown Boys, obvs.

Yep. Definitely feeling okay about not going... *eye twitch*

So yeah, looks like I'm going to Le Guess Who this year.  Nice line up:

A little bit late, but guess who was a candidate in the Scottish elections?

Of course this means that in 8 years time, we will have Moon Moon running and Jake B. Assists will be First Minister. And probably not in the EU, as it turns out a fair chunk of folk are mad racist idiots.

I'm probably the only person on here who didn't know that was 'Dubya'.  I didn't vote for him, which I have to say is a bit of a relief.

Mourinho is a fanny. Don't really like him. Interesting to see if he can do well without throwing everyone under the bus, like he did last year. I can see him winning a title or two, but all whilst blaming his own staff for conspiring against him, chopping off the head of Fergie's statue and punching Bobby Charlton in the face.

  5. Not looking good for Newcastle now, which is a shame because I was keen to see what Rafa would do with them in the Premier League next season.

This season has been interesting, to say the least, but next season will probably be just as much so.  At least partly this is because it's hard to know what to expect, so almost anything will be a surprise.  It could be 'the usual' teams winning everything and finishing at the top, but I expect at least some of them 'do a Chelsea' and plummet a bit.  It's a real possibility if players even slightly lose motivation or a good team gets a bit over the hill.  The need for 'instant results' at big clubs probably makes this more likely.

I'm wondering how the bigger clubs will look at what Leicester have done this season (and to a lesser extent teams like West Ham and Southampton).  Will they just think 'that's just a blip' or will they think there's something to learn from it.  In a way Leicester have won the league doing what teams used to do i.e. trying to play their best 11 as much as possible.  I'm not sure how easy that'll be to repeat with Champions League matches, so how they adapt to that will be worth watching.  Maybe some of the other clubs will try to be more consistent in their selections and not rotate as much though.  I can actually see the bigger clubs almost having a consistent A team and B team to cover different matches, rather than changing a few players here and there.

The other thing to watch will be transer policies.  There's lots of money coming in, so I guess clubs will be spending even more on average players than they have been doing.  But Leicester have shown that there are good players to be found in unlikely places.  They've also done the same thing that Clough did with Nottingham Forest and brought in a few 'washed up' players with something to prove.  It's been startling in the past few seasons how bad a lot of the big money signings have been in the Premier League.  A lot of £20M+ signings have been underwhelming and few have been anything better than qualified successes.  This in part explains the leveling off of standards across the league - extra money hasn't brought in significantly better players.  It might all go very predictable again, but I think it's at least as likely that we'll see a bit of a shift of approach from a lot of clubs and perhaps some more surprises.

  6. I was thinking recently that I hadn't heard a really great album in 2016 but that's changed with 'Singing Saw' by Kevin Morby.  It's consistently great and gets better every time I hear it.  One of those rare albums I'd recommend to anyone, regardless of their tastes.  Some good videos too.

Hillsborough inquest verdict - 96 unlawfully killed. 27 years it took to get the truth. Quite unbelievable.

The Sun are grudgingly reporting it. They were the very last British news outlet to both tweet it and post an article on it. Could be coincidence, but probably isn't.

Kelvin MacKenzie and Bernard Ingham will unsurprisingly be unavailable for interview for a good while, as they bury their heads in the sand.

Let's not forget that loveable rogue Boris Johnson's views on the matter:

  8. I guess if you'd have told United fans at the beginning of the season that the title could be decided in their third to last game at home to Leicester then they'd have assumed they were in for a better season than it turned out to be.

Would be quite funny to see the Chelsea guard of honour.  The FA should make them do that whenever Leicester win it.
