  1. I'd say I am quite picky. Any drums I buy must have a satin finish or else I'm not interested. Not really a fan of playing the house kits at the tunnels etc as they don't sound even nearly like I want it to and so quite often I take my own. As for tuning, I like everything tuned really low and don't use moon gell or anything like that

All my heads are Evans (except for the Bass Drum Reso) as I like how open and lively they sound and the coating endurance is pretty good. Had Aquarian's on for a bit and really liked them but recorded they sounded quite dull. The heads I use at the moment are:

    Snare batter - Coated G1

    Snare reso - Hazy 300

    Toms batter - Coated G2

    Toms reso - Clear G1

Bass batter - EMAD Coated (I ended up not using the foam rings so might get an EQ4 Coated next time)

    Bass reso - Aquarian Regulator

    :D

Also have a Roland TD3 electric kit in my flat's living room and currently residing at a friend's house is my old Yamaha Stage Custom with a random assortment of cymbals.

  3. this is an interstning point man,i aint really noticed how i hit them,i have not cracked any cymbals tho, that being said,is there a "correct" way/height to have the cymbal stands etc to prevent incorrect hitting?

prob a stupid question and each to there own on how to set a kit but a few ppl have pointed out that having everythin low and flat is the best way and not high and angled!

like i say more or less new to drumming but looking for all the advice i can get before taking it to the stage and more than likely leading to a slating for not doing things the right way and me looking like an ass!!

    cheers for the advice lads!!

    Zildjian.com - en-US

The link pretty much sums up how to hit them. If you aim straight for the centre when you hit them then they're not going to last very long. Aim an inch or 2 off centre (more or less depending on the size of cymbal) and they'll last a lot longer as you're not pushing them where they can't go.

The flatter you can get them the better but you don't want them perfectly flat and really high so you would angle them more the higher you go. It's all down to personal preference really. I have mine reasonably low and almost flat. I used to have them really high and almost flat but it was too much like hard work :D

  4. Check out the Paiste PST3 and PST5 series. Very reasonably priced and very reasonable sounding. It saddens me that nowhere up here stocks anything other than Zildjian. The Zildjian ZXT and ZHT respectively are probably the closest you'll get to them but I don't rate any of Zildjian's non-pro lines to be honest

  5. I'm looking forward to Death Cab's new album far too much.

Ben Gibbard said "I just don't feel like we've really got anything to prove other than to ourselves, and to make a record that we all really enjoy," which I guess everyone says, but I get the impression that Plans, although awesome, was made for the label's approval. I can't beleive that album came out 3 years ago. I'm not liking this "It's 2008" malarky.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think I've ever looked forward to an album more than this one

  6. I think it's fantastic that the internet has no quality control, let people decide for themselves if they like something rather than being told what to like by massive corporations and their aggressive marketing campaigns. I think this concept scares some consumers more than they are willing to admit.

Producers definately are a commodity which will always matter and become increasingly important, which is why I've chosen this route as a way to possibly make some actual money while at the same being able to put my own material out.

People ought to realise that we have infact gone back to the drawing board and this has been happening for nearly a decade, you have to look at what's been going on before murdochs myspace and itunes. Independantly run shoutcast stations running regular live shows have been around for years and are a total joy, this is the platform for independant artists to get involved in a scene and get people switched on to their music.

We have the chance now to redefine the terms and it's just unfortunate that so many people don't realise it, because they are too busy strolling around with those ubiquitous white headphones in their ears in the typical passive consumerist manner.

I am in complete agreement with Stripey on this. There are so many great bands out there that get completely ignored by everyone simply because the reviewers at (for example) NME haven't been paid by the industry to rave about them. The marketing people behind it all are ruthlessly clever I'll give them that, but there comes a point when you have to say "that's enough" and hopefully one day people will listen. In the mean time cd collections will continue to expand with cd's that will be listened to for a week or 2 and then never again. And when it comes to quality control, the internet might not have any but you've got a far better chance of finding good quality music on the net. The reason is simply because of something else that the internet doesn't have; creative control.

As for the original topic, I've heard way more people say that they think Nirvana are over-rated than I've heard say that they were the best band of all time. It would seem to me then that the only reason they are over-rated is because everyone thinks they are? o_O

  7. May I draw everyone's attention again to the 10 page discussion from last year about just how cunty the bouncers are?

    http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/other-clubs-venues/40271-bouncers-exodus.html

Haha just had a read of this. Pretty crazy. I haven't had much trouble from the bouncers at Exo though I've been warned a few times for falling asleep which in somewhere as loud as Exo is quite a feat!!

    [rant]

So yeh, on that note, the thing I don't like about Exodus is that it is far too loud. The speakers are straining and conversation is difficult at best. It's just too loud for the size of room and what comes out of the speakers is seriously distorted to the point of being unrecognisable noise. It becomes slightly more tollerable when wearing proffesional ear plugs but you shouldn't have to do that in a club!! o_O

    [/rant]

  8. I've gotta say, I've always been pretty impressed playing Pacific kits. They must be the most usable sets you can get for that sort of money.

I got the MXR last year and I absolutely love it. This year I got a Paiste 2002 22" Ride ... amazing!!

  9. Sorry, not my thing at all. I can picture alot of people liking it though.

So basically you like it but don't want to admit it? jk :dunce:

I think it's quite cool and definately a breath of fresh air from the current musical trend in the UK which is definately lacking new ideas and seriously needing some so  from me

  10. I think what he's trying to say is people who are going to take it seriously and not have to leave cause their mummy won't let them stay out late on a school night

Exceptions do of course occur. 2 of the best and most dedicated guitarists I ever met were under 18.

  11. there are fucking loads of nice single girls go to exodus' date=' i think the music is great, it covers most peoples music tastes that go there and i like the way the djs are playing more older tunes aswell. It can sometimes get a bit repetitive but thats probs coz im there too much and the djs have to play what ppl want to hear. IMO exodus is by far the best club in the city and you have to go far to find a better night out. Also its like 1.75 a pint and 1.80 a nip n dash with a yellow card n thats at the weekend, what other clubs offer that?

I never go anywhere else apart from triple kirks and exo, theres no need to[/quote']

It's probably the going there every week that's the problem as like you say, it gets a bit repetitive after a while. Doesn't help that I'm not really that into indie.

  12. What was this thread about originally...oh yes' date=' apparently next Saturday will be dead in Exodus. Anyone care to explain why this might be, apart from the fact it's during the uni holidays and the first full weekend of the smoking ban?[/quote']

Most of the students not from Aberdeen will probably go home on Saturday rather than Friday so that plus the smoking ban means that Birdman's prediction could actually be right.

  13. Go to liquid or espionage where people make it their mission to go out just to get some girl rather than have a good time.

That's not nessesarily what I'm after. I am looking to go out and enjoy myself but I'm afraid I haven't had a good night in Exodus in a very long time. The presence of women is just an added bonus that Exodus doesn't have. Friday though was quite good but only because I don't remember much of it X)

  14. If you're suggesting that only pop punk and emo gets played then you're an idiot. Certainly not the case on big Dave's shift. True about guys outnumbering girls though.

Well ok I take that back about the pop punk and emo cos I'm normally pretty hammered and don't really know what's being played except that it's not really what I would listen to ... but seriously, what is Moshulu like?

  15. Please point them out to me next time' date=' my senses must be less attuned than yours.[/quote']

Please do ... I admit that some nights can be quite good but 99% of the time, guys outnumber girls 10 to 1 and the music is pish.

So what do you want to hear' date=' then?[/quote']

Anything that's not pop punk or emo would be nice. What's Moshulu like normally?

  16. Was so chuffed to see MX back up and running. I taught myself to play drums using MXtabs which made life much easier until I could actually hear what was going on in the songs. I still find it useful as I still like to have a tab to learn from and can't always be bothered to write one out.

  17. so how come you listen to so much dream theater then? :D

god i hates dream theater. i get it' date=' but i just can't stand it. i seem to be the only person in my place of work who thinks like this somedays. makes me very sad :([/quote']

Well as I said, it's being able to cross the line without ruining the song. Dream Theater is a very aquired taste and I must admit that their newer stuff can go way too far at times. It's the fact that they all cross the line and that it's not really one person trying to out-do the others that is what holds it all in place and makes me love it.

The most obvious reason as to why I listen to so much Dream Theater is because I am a drummer and Mike Portnoy is absolutely amazing and a joy to listen to/watch.
