  1. Ach weel... Maybe I read the wrong page of my book and didn't listen properly when I was at school. Take heed kids... May well have been told a one of case but it can get tricky though. Tom Waits 'Early Years' album I believe didn't have his blessing but were released by the label. Probably that gray area before any contracts etc were looked at and signed. Happy to be told my info is off though...

It pinches that it was Soundman that corrected me. Everyone knows they know less than a drummer ;)

Its like remote control by the Clash, released by CBS without their permission. Thats why the Clash released double and triple albums, to try and fulfill then get out of the contract, but the double and triple only counted as single albums. doh!

  2. Mountain Dew stained and destroyed everything it touched!

Steven, maybey you know about Mountain Dew, but you know jack about opal fruits -

'Curly Wurly bars were banned in Ireland, along with a number of other confectionery brands such as Opal Fruits and Toblerone, until 1979'

  3. I appreciated your work with aka-ska Mark, you have a good pair of lugs on you :-)

Are there still copies of the CD in One-up?

    Cheers

    Jayne

I would have thought so Jane, I put 50 in last week, doubt if they all would have gone by now.

  4. No way! I think Linda died a while ago, chips died as well. There were quite a few members came and went. Rodney once gave me the only copy of a mix of the album, it had a big huge disco drum sound and really clean guitars. Rodney was disgusted with it! Last thing I heard of Rodney was that he was living in Edinburgh, doing new age-ey music with another dude.

I had some brilliant times back then. We used to go to Chumbawambas house all the time and play hide and seek, they lived in a huge house, the electricity was ran in from the streetlights. Can remember queing in the kitchen for my bowl of lentils!

  5. This is, in my understanding of copyright law, wrong.

The APRS (Association of Professional Recording Services) standard terms and conditions state that copyright belongs to the recording studio until the bill is paid in full. Recording studios don't have permission to do anything with the recordings, they only have the right to withhold them.

In the absence of any written contract stating otherwise that is the view that, imo, would be taken in any legal dispute over ownership of recordings.

That would sound about right to me. I would have thought whoever paid for the recordings, owns them. The song, ALWAYS belongs to the writer, unless he signs a publishing deal with a publisher, then the publisher will collect the royalties and give the writer his agreed cut. Obviously there are many different deals with different terms and rights of ownership.

But yes, who pays for the recordings, owns them.

  6. sugar soap or lemon juice! The walls have sucked the oil out. You might not get it all out, but it might help. If its pretty bad, I'd mix a little paint (same colour as the walls) with water and cover up the stain, not paint the whole wall (fuck that!). Might just do the trick for them not to notice it.

  7. During the verses, the bass is playing a melody, the guitar is playing a different melody, and the vocals a different melody again. It dosn't work. Theres nothing for the guitar or vocals to hang onto. Pretty standard shoegazy type song with a couple of guitars going for gothic euphoria. Heard it 1000 times before, but a lot more interestingly. Sorry.

  8. Well it was going to happen I guess so there was no point crying about it and trying to stop it as I've stated above I've had other things taking my time up recently so its hardly crossed my mind! You have a point and I'm sure that you done everything with the best of intentions. Obviously me and the singer don't get on to put it mildly so asking her did not really involve me but its one of those things.

All you needed to do was message me and I would have taken it off. There were (literally) 100s of other bands who would have been more than happy to be on it. I think it's unfair to complain because you never asked in the fist place.

Il ask Neil to make it unavailable to stream or download from here.

  9. I'm not that bothered I guess, no. I've more important things on. I'm mildly irritated rather than furious but I have a point.

Les, I asked Lucy and she was more than happy, its a great song, thats why I included it. I think people still listen to bands that have split up??

Youve known for a good few months that the cuts track was going to be on the CD, why did you not message me direct, rather than waiting to post on this thread??

I cant ask permission from every person in every band. That would be ridiculous.

  10. If you lost 40k that is a failure and nothing to be proud of atall. Also, I do not appreciate your threatening PM's, thanks.

Heres a word from our hero Stripey which I recieved in a PM -

Hahahahaha, I love it. Of course it is well known by people on here that I have no respect for the drooling troglodytes that inhabit Aberdeen, letalone the simpletons in shitty pointless hobby bands that probably make up most of your client base. I make that clear all the time, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

So anyway, don't have a go at me for stating the *fact* that over the years I've heard nothing but complaints from people who've used your services. That's a reputation you've created for yourself, and it's your PR problem. I don't blame you for being bitter though, trying to scrape a living recording these fuckwits toy bands.

  11. The truth of the matter is that I wanted to put Henri on the CD, but the mix sounded weak compared to the other tracks, thats why I was remixing it. The band told me they were all happy with the original mix. The guitar part wasnt too fuzzy, the pedal that you used didnt work properly, so I had it mxed way down in the original mixes, and wanted to bring that part up.

I dont appreciate the fact that you (the band) said you were totally happy with everything, then you (Phil), publicly make a statement like you made on the other thread. The truth of the matter is your attitude towards me and the studio changed when I sent you a message saying I wasnt including Henri on the compilation.

  12. Can you tell me what bands on the compilation have posted on this thread please.

The fact of the matter is that your comments are unjust and unfair.

That should have read - can you tell me what bands on the compilation have posted on this thread and said I never asked them to be on the compilation.

    Reply please.

  13. Well, my apologies on that one then! People above seemed surprised that you had their track on it, that's all.

I don't claim expertise on anything and whether I have blah blah airplay doesn't matter, the fact is you can get equally good results recording yourself in comparison to recording at a place like exile.

Can you tell me what bands on the compilation have posted on this thread please.

  14. Studios that respect the people who have recorded there tend not to do such things without permission!

This CD sends out a bad message imo, this is exile recording studios... I will do what the fuck I want with your recordings!

Anyway, you can get as good a result as exile recordings or better by recording 'at home' via the many means available to people now. 8-)

Are you in a band? Has anything youve recorded at home had daytime national airplay? Airplay in over 350 radio stations in the states? Have you worked in recording studios like CAVA (Glasgow), Sawmills (Cornwall), the the Fortress(London)?

Id like to know, becasue you seem to be an expert on music production and recording.

Also, can you enlighten everyone to where you got this information regards the compilation CD from?

I have asked ALL the bands for permission to use the tracks on the compilation. Why do folk post comments when they know little or nothing about the real situation?

I ran Lithium Records for over 5 years, and lost around 40K in the process. All the bands that I worked with made money from the PRS and exposure through my label, I never took a penny from them.

Ive produced hundreds of bands. If I had a bad day or didnt get on with a band, so what?? For every bad experience a band has had in the studio there are 100 bands who have a good one.

Im sick to the teeth of people that do not know me personally making comments about me and the studio. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, sure, but the majority of these negative comments are by vultures who await any opportunity to stick the knife in. Its the same people who have do nothing with their lives, and sit at home behind their PCs with chips on their shoulders sticking the boot in.

  16. Ive read all the comments on the CD and the studio, and here is some information for you -

I asked Stephen if I could use the Deadalus track and he said yes. I didnt use Henri because it was on the Granite City Records compilation. For everones information, I asked all the bands, and everone was more than happy to let me us the track on the compilation. Especially Chris from Paterns in Pavements. Whoever said he asked him and he said no, is a liar.

Secondly - regards Henri, I have various mixes of it. If I remember, in total, you paid around 190 for 3 nights recording, and at least 5 or 6 days mixing. Thats not bad in my book.

I take great pride in everything I record, and have NEVER considered anything I have recored to be finished, and am always looking to improve it. Kaarta - ALL the changes I was asked to make on Henri were done, and I had a conversation with someonein the band about how I agreed with the points and was working on them. Your mood towards me and the studio has fairly changed since you wernt going to be on the compilation. I now regret spending my time and effort working on the mixes (that youve never heard, and probably never will).

The reason I dont post messages on here (with no disrespect to the owners) is because on the whole, the threads I read, tend to be insipid, negative, and destructive.

I always have the upmost respect for bands who come into the studio, my track record regards radio airplay speask for itself.

Its soul destroying busting your ass for a band in the studio, then see them turn around and call you a piece of shit. You wouldnt say it to my face though, would you?

Anyone has any problem all they need to do is call me and I'll sort it, what most of you dont understand is that Im passionate about it, always try and do my best, and always try and improve.

Theres some awesome tracks on the compilation. Read the footnote on the back. Some of the bands have spilt up, sure. Its not a showcase or benefit CD. Its an album of great songs, and of course its to promote the studio. When a band releases a CD, is it not to promote the band?

Many thanks for reading, check out the album.
