y'all remember Elisa from the Six Organs of Admittance gig (upstairs @ The Lemon Tree), right?
Yes, but I'm not letting that put me off

According to this lot, you can also recycle bottles at Crombie, Johnston, & St Peter's Halls - will save you the walk/bus to Morrisons.
-
Try Cafe Boheme cafe bohme - the seafood specials on the evening menu are great. For a lower budget option they have a lunch / early evening menu - 14.95 for three courses.
I'd also second Yatai, but think you need to book well in advance as it's not very big.

although with fred frith i was momentarily caught between really getting into his soundscapes and thinking "i'm watching a man hit his guitar with an ashtray!?". the former won out.
That's the spirit !

Sound Found Sound
Cheers Bill - another really interesting event in the great Sound festival.
Like Fred Frith said, we're really lucky to have this festival in our home town - I hope folk are appreciating it.
Sounds like a good one tonight, and I'm intrigued by the "using only found plant material". Should we bring our own grass whistles for an audience participation encore ? o_O

you're not still talking about Boredoms are you?
Shuuussshhh !

Mr & Mrs Balvack are really looking forward to this
The gig last Saturday at the Music Hall was wonderful, even though Dame Evelyn had to do a wee speech at the start to warn the more mature, classical listener that they were about to get a totally improvised concert. o_O
-
or you could just go to one of the other gigs he is doing during SOUND?
I don't think Evelyn's going to be too chuffed when we join in at the Music Hall gig though
-
As part of The Sound festival Fred Frith will be hosting an improvistaion weekend comprising workshops and an event on the 27th and 28th October at the University MacRobert Building. If anyone is interested send me a PM and I'll send you an application form. Closing date 1st October.
Me and Mr Balvack were interested in coming to this, until we realised you needed to be able to play an instrument to Grade 7 standard o_O
Should be good fun though for those that do qualify: Mr Frith is great. Does "Henry Cow" mean anything to you, Scottyboy?
Info about him here

Stripey: "nobody with any credibilty (sic) would have anything to do with it."
Teabags: "Statement of fact."
Sounds like an opinion to me, unless you know for a fact that everyone associated with NEOS - artists, admin, visitors - has any credibility. Maybe you should go and have a word with Mr lepeep about truth and art

yup, i did a quick google search after i posted that. looks fuckin sweet, recommend it?
Definitely. The menu's full of lots of of little dishes. If you find it hard to make up your mind - like we did - then go for one of the tasting menus. They don't look cheap, but one between 2 of us and a couple of extra skewer dishes we fancied was plenty. The menus are here
I've never had Japanese, except for those pishy little boxes of sushi from Asda. I'll have to try it sometime. I like Chinese and Thai, is it similar? It's not really like Chinese or Thai, but is really tasty and you don't need to have raw fish. And plastic sushi from the supermarkets? there's no comparison between that and the stuff from Chef Jang or Yatai
-
Fantastic !
Yet another musician I thought I'd never see in Aberdeen, and there's the chance to see him 3 times.
-
Chef Jang is ace
Wouldn't bother, it didn't stay open very long. It's been closed every time I walk past it for a while now and looks like it's been cleared out.But go down to Chef Jang in the market, tried his sushi the other week and it was great (first time I'd had sushi as well).
Thanks Chris, I'll head back to Yatai next time I fancy a sit-down Japanese.
And totally agree about Chef Jang: the sushi and the sashimi are wonderful.

contact info?
Does anyone have a phone number for this place ? Ta.

David Lynch, without a doubt.
Seconded ?(
I also have a soft spot for Terry Gilliam. I couldn't say that I like all his films, but when they're good, they're very good.
-
Thinking about going to this, but I'm a little put off by the price.
I got mine a little cheaper (21 + 1.50 booking fee) from 1-UP. I'm just amazed at getting the chance to see Terry Riley play Aberdeen.
-
Has anyone else been to see "Inland Empire" yet? Mr & Mrs Balvack were both amazed by it.
We found the trick was to just let it wash over you and seep in rather than trying to figure out what was really going on. A beautifully complex progression from Mulholland Drive, with a hint of Twin Peaks, and a totally stunning movie - a classic Lynch work.
Only about 10 people in Belmont Screen 1 when we went though ?(
-
Yep, it's a weird one alright. It made me look at cyclists in a different light though o_O
I can't comment on the influence on Lost, other than in both of them you wonder what on Earth is going on.

Aberdeen needs more 'mental
Bill - good for you for organising this, and best of luck for the proposed quarterly events
See you on the 28th.

no ageism please
I'm a damn site older than my 20s and I would also recommend Polar Bear, or anything with Seb Rochford ... or anything that isn't "trad"

Stewart Lee ?
Ok I know this is off-topic as the thread's about non-funny comedians but I'm surprised there's been no mention of Stewart Lee so far. His show at the Lemon Tree a year or so back was fantastic, though the audience was literally divided by him. "Gaping anus of Jesus !"
There's probably been enough said on Bill Hicks (I'm pretty much with Chris on that one) what the hell I may as well wade in too as I'm an oldie who saw him live in Edinburgh in the early nineties.
Of course it may seem dated if you watch it now - it was more than 15 years ago ! In my opinion the best stand-ups are like a good gig: nothing really beats being there for a one-off experience that connects with what's going on here and now (or there and then, as it were) . My take on BH (and Stewart Lee for what it's worth) was that he was trying to get folks to think for themselves, not just blindly accept what authority, TV, or even he, said. Viz Stewart Lee getting a rise out of the Lemon Tree audience with his "scottish heros were guy" bit. Yes Bill Hicks would take the piss out of "his audience" but mainly if they weren't willing to even contemplate any opinion other than their own, or rather, one they'd blindly accepted from the powers that be. He maybe wouldn't give a damn if you didn't like him, but at least give free speech a go eh ?

is this the Kartta interview?
there's meant to be an interview with kartta on the lemon tree website somewhere but i'll be damned if i can find it.This may be what you're looking for Dave? Scroll down past the "Vacancy Box Office Assistant" bit on the home page, and right at the bottom you'll find "To download Steven Milne's complete article from The Lemon Tree magazine click here"
Obvious once you know, eh ? So yes, can someone please, please, redo the whole site, it's abysmal!
In support of other folks' comments it would be useful, nay essential, to have a calendar to see what's on rather than having to pick a category and then scroll down that annoying wee window... If the LT still sent out the programmes for free I wouldn't mind so much, but it certainly doesn't encourage you to find out what's on. I'll stick to the ab-music "gigs and events" thank you very much.
And while I'm in a ranting mood, being a true Aberdonian I'll be darned if I'm going to pay a 1.50 booking fee per ticket to buy online when I can phone the box office and pick up tickets on the night.
-
anything Henry Cow-ish sounds great to me so I'm really disappointed I'll not be able to make this despite it being a Saturday night

... some "so called" friends are asking me if I should wear white and should I get married in a church because apparently I should get married in a regisrty office if its a second wedding.
What do you think? Should we be treated differently because we have been married before? Why is our wedding not seen to be so special?
...
Is it possible that they're ultra-religious and take your previous vows of a "till death do you part" ilk very seriously? And what's with all these heathens using our kirks just for a pretty backdrop for their wedding photies ? [Hog's proved you don't need that ]
BTW that wasn't intended to insult your own spiritual values: you may well be a god-fearing lass for all I know
But like the general consensus, do what you want and have fun on your special day
