Oh you can't beat a good bit of the Meatmen:
1 down 3 to go
chapman shot him dead
plugged him in the head
no more slopehead wife to fuck
no more squito bites to suck
lennon's dead hip hip hooray
all his dues he know must pay
george, paul, ringo any day
will be dead we all must pray
a paunched out hippie fart he was
a pot smoking scumbag
bespeckled old scuz
his panface gookin' fuck so me stud
insurance cash all covered in blood
one year later
they paid their respects
prayed for his soul
then went went home & had sex
hipocrytes all of them
the worst kind of drugged out phlegm
crippled children suck
it's easy to see
their parents were dumb
for having v.d.
and conceiving a baby as ugly as it
i say give it leg braces
that don't even fit
mom & dad smoked their dope
for a liberal smooth future
they had a lot of hope
but because of their folly
their life is pretty crass
a little baby boy
with an arm stuck out its ass
Tooling for Anus
Tooling For Anus...That's You
Tooling For Anus...Him Too
Tooling For Anus...Her Too
Tooling For Anus..Them Too
Detroit City is the place to go
if you wanna lick gonads or blow a stiff
bookies, nunzios, menjos too
to pack some blowin'
to shoot some glue
(chorus)
i'm not a fag and i'll never be
afraid to hit the can to take a pee
afraid some sissy'll grab my ass
i'll stick his face with broken glass

The more I think about it the more i'm coming to the conclusion that the Fall are the best covers band ever....we've already said 'Mr Pharmacist' and now 'Victoria'...hows about 'There's a ghost in my house' and the brilliant 'Rollin' Dan(n)y' to be going on with????
I see your Fall and raise you to Sonic Youth's Feed the Fall Peel session.
They even did Victoria.
Oh heard Jeremy Lewis 12 Crass Songs: Punk is Dead & and Do they owe us a living are great. no really.

I don't get it, what is the point of the video?
I believe videos are promotional devices.
It's his money, he can spend it anyways he likes.
Makes a nice change from all that testosterone filled ones you usually get.

the comments at the side are so funny too...so many asshols who only see what they think they see.
Aye. You are not wrong...

Surfing for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy stuff I stumbled across this:
Urban goes Rural?
Tractor porn?
Fucking hilarious though
-
And of course, HMV and Virgin will just bump their prices in the face of reduced competition.
Unlikely as their main competitors are surely the internet (for back catalogue) and the super markets for chart (whatever that constitutes these days).
Whether we like it or not the days of the big 'record' shop are over. Good bye mass market hello niche.
-
Are they still on cash sales only at Fopp?
If they are then it's only a matter of time I guess.
-
I would love to see:
Gillian Welch
Bill Callahan (hey hows about a Joana Newsome double bill?)
Sufjan Stevens
...oh and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy back again (with Alasdair Roberts as support!)

Scars? was that the punk bloke with a Ghengis Khan-esque topknot? I was only 12 when I first went in, so it was scary a bit, but also one of the coolest places I had ever seen up to that point.
Did he have a top knot? He may have at some point. Probably. He was called Scars because he had Scars painted on the back of his leather. After the Embra band.
I know, how stunningly original and who could have ever thought that one up?
Does anyone remember the original (?) Fopp in Glasgow? Down from the end of Sauchiehall St somewhere near a multiplex cinema if I recall... I quite liked that one and usually bought something every time I was in the locality. I was never impressed with the Embra branch though (I guess it could never match the personal service I got from Avalanche).
-
Nope. They operated side by side for a lot longer - or another firm (the one with the big hall in Fountainbridge) took over HT's buisness. I went between the two stores for some considrable time.
Some body else moved in to the back of HT (but it wasn't 1 Up). Great we are both right!
-
Ah the Saturday vinyl trawl - wonderful memories ! Grooves,Thistle,Bruce Millers,1-up (Rosemount),The Other Record Shop plus chains that had record depts (and therefore sales!!!) like Menzies,Boots, etc Just ain't the same anymore *sigh*
Shame about Fopp if it's true
Woolies used to do ex chart singles cheap!
Aye, I shame about Fopp indeed.
-
Nope, people may have moved between shops but both stores existed together - I'm another who did the Saturday round of them all too often.
Pedants corer. Nope. It started in Happy trails then moved further up the road to Rosemount Viaduct (no. 75 if I recall). Hippy and 75 co-existed for as long as it need to shift the stock ie. over the weekend?). George St and 75 RV co-existed though as I thought I said as I never understood why have two shops and two sets of overheads. Made sense to move into one in Diamond St.

I'm sorry, what?
I think what Kimy is saying that your musical purchases (and by extension taste) appears to be dictated purely by price i.e what ends up in the sales rack, rather than any other factor. Put simply if it aint cheap you aint buying it.
I hope that clears things up.
All this reminds that back in the days when I was propping up 1-Up and The Other Record Shop single handedly albums were generally around a fiver.
And that was, oh, 20 years ago. Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
When did buying an album change from buying something to just being product? Yeah digital is much more convenient but they seem have thrown the baby out with the bath water. Vinyl was an object, an artifact. cd's are just more, well, disposable. When was the last time you loked at a cd cover and went 'man, that look's fucking great!'? Never bought a cd because it's cover looked good. Bought heaps of vinyl that way.
Christ I'm beginning to feel old...

Earlier times saw me (with paper-round money burning a hoile in my pocket) doing the rounds of Telemech, Macs, Alexanders etc
Virgin records up George St still had a shambolic feel too.
The more I think, the more I recall wee record shops (mostly second hand) that flowered briefly before fading away. (Above the Belmont Bar for Jazz and Psych, above the Victoria Restaurant, up George St on the right-hand side (was it an ex taxi-driver or something...he had some great folk/psych stuff!), Hutcheon St etc
Don't forget Brue Millers when it was on Holburn St. I remember toying after buying Swell Maps singles with my dinner money. Maybe I shouldn't have listened to it first as I might just have bought it otherwise! The Times Up Buzzcocks boot that Scars flogged me he said he got there too!
And lets not forget Thistle Music who could come up with the odd jem (early Orange Juice 12" spring to mind).
Back on topic: Fopp is good for specific things but it doesn't have the breadth the 1 Up has. Know what you mean about pricing but old regulars used to get discount (well I did when Lepeep and Poe were still there!).
Yeah, I'll miss the cheap DVD's for sure. You can't help but think that HMV were trying to steal a match on Fopp too.
-
The staff don't appear to know what's happening. Poor sods. You have to feel sorry for them.
I've heard rumours about Fopps problems associated with their buying up of 60 odd Music Zone stores but being a paranoid I'm not going to repeat them on here!
Their being re-opened yesterday and taking only cash sales.... well you could infer something from that.
Talking about the glory days of 1-Up though, aye. The shop started in the back of Hippy Trails indeed. Then moved to Rosemount Viaduct. The days when you make a proper living in the record trade. Most of it from me I think! They did have a store in George St. but god knows why it never made sense to me. Then of course they moved to Diamond Street. They certainly have had a whole lot of dodgy staff Peep, thats for sure. Aye I mean you!
The Rosemount Viaduct were the glory days though. I remember people being scared of going in there because of Scars and Hen.
I would also put in a good word for Kevin and Avalanche. For the year I was in Edinburgh Avalanche gave the best service of a shop I've ever had. Kev knew what I liked (I bought the first Galaxies album off him without a clue what it was or sounded like because he said I'd want it if I did. And he was right!).

How much?
Cant you read? Half price!
-
Oh no! 3 Lps:princess:, and 2 teles
Surely that must be swinging both ways, no?
-
There seems to be some people with some serious problems in here!
What does it matter to anybody else if (or why) someone has a burning desire to buy another expensive guitar which won't make them play (or look) any better but that they personally just might get something out of? Look at it this way if it really is that bad then they'll tire of it and in 6 months they'll be selling it off half price. Bargain city you all win.
No I don't need another telecaster but I want it. And guess what, I can afford it. In fact I could afford two of them if push came to shove. Mind you the divorce might make it somewhat uneconomic. So any day soon a hot rod will be winging it's way in my direction.
Ha, ha, anybody wanna buy a Tokai ES-120 (going cheap)?
PS Hog - I know it doesn't make you gay, but you must admit it 'looks' to be a common theme! Of course not that looking (or being) gay is anything to be ashamed of I might add.
Christ - shit for brains. Having re-read the post above this one I would have been quicker just writing I agree with everything Mr Eriatarka says. Ho hum.
-
GAS - Gear Aquisition Syndrome.
How many of spend more time reading up about gear than practicing our instruments?
How many of us have more gear than talent?
Own up.
Ha, last night spent a good half hour reading the Guitarist review of the 52 tele hotrod. And at least 10 minutes just looking at the main picture. Man it's just beautiful.
To paraphrase Bongwater 'they do vintage 52 hot rods now, I want one'
So yup, that's me then.
-
Not much over the last few months but over the last couple of weeks:
Grinderman
Live at Massey Hall - Neil Young
Live at the Fillmore East - Neil Young
Let it Bleed - Rolling Stones
Woke on a Whaleheart - Bill Callahan
That christmas thing by Sufjan Stevens
Plus the missus got some Espers stuff which is alright.
-
The 12 string is a Burns Double Six, Excellent guitar, best value guitar I have ever bought, only 289 from Peter Cook's.
Problem is it seems to make the player of it look really gay...
I love you guys though. Makes my Tele, Strat, Tokai and Big Baby look positively lean! Sure there's room in there for another one...
-
I suppose that I've just come back from getting a second quote for that Vintage Hot Rod 52 tele I reckon that I must have it and pretty bad.
Oh and yeah talent definitely out weighed by the number of guitars I own (currently 4).
They do all get played, just badly!
your rarest music?

I used to have a Touch Me I'm Sick 12" with labels printed on the wrong side with a letter from Blast First saying it was a limited run of 75 and all the rest had been destroyed (or something like that). Oh and signed Ciccone Youth album test pressing (or was it Daydream Nation I forget now but makes no difference as it was sold years ago with most of my vinyl)
Other than that I supposed the 'official' Blast First Sonic Youth 'Feed The Fall' bootleg cassette which is just a C90 tape of the Peel show with an official printed cover. Still got it somewhere
