  1. I've used the Seymour Duncan Invader in a squire strat, it replaced a couple of different Ibanez humbuckers that I'd used preivously, its does have a lot of bass and gain to it. I've never thought it sounded muddy but it is in a squire and the string tension is quite high (bending strings is hard work!). It's miles better than the Ibanez pickups though!

It gives a good metallica style high gain crunch sound and with a boost from a fuzz or distortion pedal can make some really cool doom tones with loads of bass and fuzz while still letting the notes get through. You could probably find something with higher gain for really raw death metal sounds though, plus the invader's got the daft looking huge pole pieces!

I've been thinking about buying some new pickups from Wizard Pickups > Electric Guitar Pickups, Strat pickups, Tele pickups, P90 pickups, Bass pickups, but I'm kinda happy with my sound at the moment so I'm struggling to justify it! They have a few high gain options.

  2. I recently replaced the pre-amp valves in my Laney from rather knackered no namer ecc83's to JJ ecc83's. I bought them from Hot Rox - Electro Harmonix Pedals, valves, ZVex pedals, MXR pedals. I did try Watford valves but the site was down at the time. I also have the JJ ecc83's in my home made 18watt amp. They sound quite bright and dont have huge amounts of gain. I usually have to turn the treble down (on both amps) as it can be too much. But with a bit of tweaking you can get some amazing sounds from them, clean or distorted. I run my laney with the gain control and drive control at 10 and it creates an amazing distortion and lead tone, not too fizzy. Its more of a rock guitar sound than a full on metal noise!

I've had a few dealings with hotrox and they're pretty good, one order from them I got the wrong item in the right box but they where helpful sorting it out.

edit: not had any dealings with re-baising or replacing power amp valves as of yet!

  3. if I was Doctor, I would go against a Jehovah's witness couples wishes to not give their child a blood transfusion even if it was illegal and I would lose my job.

if you did that then you would be disregarding there beliefs which would probably be construed as discrimination. you'd be screwed by the system for saving someone's life,

what a great world we live in!!

did you hear about the muslin check out workers who refused to touch/scan/bag any pork products?

p.s. i wouldnt really make fun of anyone's baldness! :D

  4. How would you describe discrimination?

discrimination is a bit like harassment (in a work situation anyway) in that it is down to the person who is being discriminated against's perception of the attack/comment.

e.g. if i said "hog is bald" hog might go "shit, so i am, fair doo's" or he could go "im sorry but you have deeply offended me, i now feel very hurt", doesnt matter if i said in in jest or screamed it to his face, its how he takes it in.

ok so the example is harassment rather than discrimination but it works something like that!

  5. I hear there is a bus from Aberdeen for something like 60-70 which takes 12 hours. Probably would be fun for the first few hours but not 12 so will have to investigates other means of transport.

i bussed it last year from glasgow, was pretty bad like! tho it makes it worth while when you see the que to get out of the carpark on the monday morning!!

  6. ace! nice experiment! dont think there have been many/any production guitars made from proper chip board, maybe plywood or very cheap timbers!

im guessing that number 2 is the chipboard on the clean track as it sounds as tho the guitar is the worst set up, and number 1 on the distorted track as it doesnt have the same depth as the other two.

I hope im not wrong as it doesnt say much for me and my ears, especially when i'm customizing amps and pedals! :dunce:

  7. I can understand completely why sales/technical staff have this attitude, when day after day droves of drooling 3 fingered aberdonian gimps stagger in to complain about problems with things they bought that they don't understand how to use.

Consumers have no bloody right to whine about stuff like this, it's not that the staff are arrogant or offensive, your problems stem from the fact that you are thick. Either educate yourself or accept that you must pay someone with a clue to fix your problem.

i see your point, infact was it you working in the computer shop that day??!!

Thing was that i'd installed the same equipment on other machines, spent a fair bit of time trying numerous installation methods, read up loads of stuff i'd googled on the subject and exhausted my knowledge of computer systems that i've learnt through college and work, but this dude in the shop was happier to stand and have a loud argument with me for 15minutes about how he had spent years in the telecoms industry and gained a degree on the subject, when he could have just said "you need to update your bois", which he did say in the end after i bet him couldnt do sort it himself!

  8. yeah, should be able to get your money back or a replacement though for some reason computer parts sales people seem to think they are above this law!

I've had trouble myself trying to return kit that was "easy to install" and "compatible with older computers", the sales dudes said to me when i went back after failing to get the thing going "it is easy to install if your a computer technician and its only compatable when you have this type of software" then when I asked if he could give me an idea of what I would need to do he told me "im a sales guy not a consultant, I know how to install it but its not my job to tell you"! he was such a dick!

  9. is your cab normally closed at the back then?

Yeah, from what i've read closed back cabs have to have a specific internal volume, be air tight and can be built to resonate at particular frequencies! my wood working skills arent quite up to building shit like that either so i've gone for a simple open backed design, its about the size of a 2x12 combo amp.

was hoping to have it finished soon but when the speakers turned up i found one was 8 ohm and the other 16ohm! was the right box but containing the wrong speaker, suppose thats what you get for buying "quality" american products!!

  10. if you'd posted this last week I might not have started building the 2x12 cab I currently have half finished in my shed!!

I might get back to you if mine turns out crap!

Hope you get a good price for it, looks real nice!

  11. dude, might be worth getting the amp's own power transformer checked to see if its possible to re-wire it for 240V's.

On my home made 18w head it's possible to wire the power transformer for 115-120V's or 240V's. it is just a case of wiring the primary windings is series for 240 and in parallel for 120. would save having to carry a second transformer about!!

  12. Hey, just my opinion, if you think it's cool to put a Durex sticker on the front of your guitar then go for it, but personally I think it's about as cool as finding blood on your toilet paper.

Oh, and I don't like relics either, I prefer to "age" them myself, accidentally.

i know what you mean about "relics", why buy a new guitar that already has scratches and dents, you even get them with pre made fag burns and shit!! guitars are probably the only thing you can buy where the oldest and/or cosmetically damaged items are the most sought after!

cheers for the comments about the squire (good and bad), if it was a plain white strat with 3single coils i'd bet no one would give it a second look tho!!

  13. i'v got a washburn xb-100, was about 150 quid, not the best bass but its a bit smaller than the a p-bass. the neck is shorter than a regular bass i believe and was easier for me to learn on, being a guitar player anyhoo! got more of a modern look to it than the p-bass imo.

amp wise i picked up an old 30w solid state Sound City combo from cash converters for 30quid, sounds quite good for the price!!!

  14. think is more to do with the marketing, i bought kerrang last week for the first time in years and it was like an aiden/my chemical disco/p!atd/fall out boy only mag :puke:

but sayin that when i was 15 kerrang was full of monster magnet, qotsa & amen and i like all of them.....................o_O

i think is all to do with brain washing

edit: my chemical disco - :dunce:
