Having heard a few people occasionaly claiming to only 'support' bands who are signed to an independent record label, I was wondering how much this is the case here?
DO people really judge music by the label that sells their CD's?
Personally, I don't give a damn. Large record labels can get more of a band's music out to more people, and offer their bands large advances if they think they are worth it.
And does it affect the music, which is surely what matters, in the end. I mena, Bob Dylan has always (pretty much) been on Columbia, (now part of Sony) one of the biggest labels ever, and he could hardly be called a comercial sell-out.
If anything, major labels can take risks on different acts, cos they can use the oney from shitey boy-bands and such to support the more credible and interesting acts.

The metal/punk/hardcore "scene" is' date=' relatively speaking, tiny in Aberdeen. That along with poor promotion will put off a lot of bands.
There seems to be no problem with mainstream acts like Travis, elton john, or even lulu pulling a crowd. I was even dragged along by my wife to see edi reader at the beach ballroom some time ago. To my surprise it was mobbed and a very good gig indeed.[/quote']
MOst gigs by hald-well kown people - Bloc Party, GLC, etc. do sell out and the crowd is really, good. And to be fair, most bands only do Glasgow, even missing out Edinburgh.
I contacted friends of Pete Doherty (I help run The Libertines official website) a while back and Babyshambles came up here... OK, so that went a bit wrong, but still, if people contact bands and stuff, and show an interest, things start to happen.

Poor mites.
"Nobody undertands me!
Except for Avril!"

I'm going to assume you're one of my regulars at Exodus on Saturday nights' date=' then... [/quote']
I;ve not been on a Saturday for ages.
Usually on Mondays and Wednedsays.

Lovely stuff. You should get their B-Sides album though' date=' it's a much better compilation. Or you could just buy The Holy Bible and Generation Terrorists, which are the two greatest albums ever.[/quote']
Surely the greatest albums ever are Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revsited?

I thbought it was a good post.
Also I know what you mean about dead people you don't know dying and crying about it kind of a thing.
I'm not completely obsessed with the Manics though, I have their best of and that's it!

I think he says his technique is a lot of cross-harp playing.
I'm not really sure what that is, but I can play pretty well now (after two weeks!)
PLayed at my 21st birthday party on saturday, and no-one booed me!

you work 2 minutes from my front door and 10 seconds from my work *stalkage*

yeh. guitar and harp simultaneously...though i still dont look as cool as dylan when i've got a big metal structure strapped round me neck.
Ha! Same here.
The one I got is easily big enough for a chromatic harmonica, which makes it really big.
Dylan's old ones seemed smaller.
Or maybe he has a really wide head.

Cheers.
*slurps tea*

Oh. Sorry!
Out of interest, do you play guitar and harp simultaneously?
I bought a harmonica rack a fornight ago (can you tell I'm a Dylan fan! ), and it's more difficult than it looks.

What's the best bit of advice you've ever been given, regarding playing guitar (I am trying to learn myself acoustic geetar)?
With lots of things you find something out that helps majorly with it.
I need majorly helping.
Well, not that major really, but advice is nearly always good.

I wouldn't agree that they are easy to master, easy to start though.
If you know what key a song is sung in, you can join in with your CD's, and if you're drunk enough, you'll sound good.
A good place with loads of choice is http://www.harmonicas-direct.com/index2.html. Delivery is quick too, about 2 days or so.

I read it (1984) about a year ago. I thought it was pretty good, although the idea of the Proles (is that right?) was a bit un-developed.
Although Bryn says it seems childish (kinda), so does name like "Patriot Act".

man...bob dylan is the greatest thing ever invented. i love you!
Great minds... etc.

Hello.
I'm new (to the forum - I'm not actually 'new').
I've read a few posts every now-and-again, but never actually posted I don't think.
I'm a student, (Aberdeen Uni - Geology) and I work at Gap.
My absolute favourite music thing is Bob Dylan. Other favourites include The Libertines, Razorlight, the first Streets album, a few old things, Bloc Party, The Futureheads, that kind of thing.
I also want to like a band called 'Sparklehorse'. I've never heard any of theirsongs, or really know what type of music they play, but with a name like Sparklehorse how could you not like them?
Anyways, hello.
*waits to be ignored*

My dad used to be a bit of a fan of theirs.
Personally, their name is very well chosen.
Not only are they very 'straight' (I'm not meaning 'not-gay), but they are also, in my opinion, a little bit dire as well.
Sorry for offence.
