  1. Souled Asylum are playing in the Blue Lamp this Saturday night (15th April). We haven't played there in a while but it has one of the best atmospheres in Aberdeen for this type of gig.

If you are looking for something different to go to this weekend you won't find anything better.

Check out our website for details of the band (16 piece!), the music, sound system (if you are into the technical stuff) and pictures of previous gigs.

  2. No, sorry .... there are a crew of band members and guys that get involved with setting up, about 6 or 7. If you want to know more detail about the loading in, de-rigging, money for gigging/doing the set up (extra money for that), get in touch with Mike Rowe (TrannyVan). I am not involved with the setting up side of things so don't know any of the technical specs or setting up procedures - I do know that the crew are very efficient and get things done in as little time as possible.

As Mike said, it is not for everyone - we are booked up a year in advance (something that requires a lot of commitment from all members of the band) and have a crazy amount of equipment (and people) that needs set up for every gig. It has to be something you think you would really enjoy doing and would get pleasure from - that is why we all do it and commit to it.

We are playing in the Blue Lamp on the 15th April, so if anyone wants to come along and see the band - good night in itself - see the equipment, and chat about stuff face to face, that is all the better.

  3. Sound Engineers

Souled Asylum Practices are every Wednesday night from 7 - 10 (the regularity varies during holiday periods).

If you have the time to spare and want a chance to use all that fancy gadgetry in the biggest venues in Aberdeen (and the challenge of squeezing it into smaller venues!!!) then it is a great opportunity for anyone. I don't think there is a band of this size with the type of equipment we have for miles around.

There have been a lot of changes in the band recently, which have injected a new sound, increased desire for authenticity and passion into the playing. As a member of the brass section, I am aware that subtlety and expressiveness are of utmost importance for Soul music - a great deal of this comes down to the sound engineering I suppose when everything comes through the sound system. For anyone who is interested and would like to expand and develop their talent, it would be amazing to work with, enhance and make the subtleties and expressions sing out. It makes the sound crew the finishing touch and final member(s) of the band.

  4. You would have thought so as they are launching their DVD, but I'm sure restrictions on playing a gig the week before a Lemon Tree show have been set in place.

You will have to make do with Ghost of Bongo! We were going to do some Hot Mangu covers but opted for Pearl Jam and writing a new song - get to use my new synth (awsome!).

Will be a fun night anyway so come along if you have a pound to spare.

  5. I havn't seen a huge amount around Aberdeen (i think Kathryn Sawers does this and iv heard Ellie Mulhern do it) but more to the point:

One of my friends has recently recorded a demo she plays piano and sings. She is a very talented lass but doesnt realy know where to play live ect. Where are good places in Aberdeen for this style and do you think there realy is a market for it in Aberdeen?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Definately something I would like to see.

Writing some new material that allows us to have a decent set when our singer is away. Although this is more than a little annoying, don't mind getting a chance to sing some songs!

    Look out for:

    Jonny Cash tribute night

    26th Feb

    Drummonds

  7. lovin the basslines try 2 see all their gigs wit one of my m8s who loves them 2' date='but last 2 gigs their usual singer was gone, anyone know wat happened?[/quote']

We are in the unfortunate situation where our singer works offshore. As we still want to play music while he is away, we have started doing all the gigs we have booked rather than cancelling. The only problem with this is that there are a limited number of songs me and Frank (guitarist) can sing and play. I suppose we have been guilty of indulging in some experimental funk jams on these occasions, but the whole point of playing music is to enjoy yourself, and we enjoyed playing them.

If you want to see us with our usual singer, then you could come down to the Tunnels tonight where we will be supporting Fortune Drive. Doors open 7.30. If you are feeling adventurous and fancy a road trip, then we are playing this Thursday night Elliots Bar (Glasgow) and Stereo (Glasgow) on Monday 13th.

Always glad when people are enjoying the music. We will be moving away from Aberdeen (for various reasons) within 6 months so drink it up while you still can!

    Take it easy

    Ghost of Bongo (Colin/keys)

  8. I've seen them a couple of times at Moorings...not totally my thing but good for a drunken night out' date=' and the keyboard player is great, agree with the "stevie wonder sound" comparison above!! Rhodes baby![/quote']

    Muchas gracias :gringo:

Apologies for offending those other peoples ears! Was completely unintentional! Keep on enjoying your local music
