  1. There is no reason why you should have to if it is in a proper venue. None of the gigs I have played down in Edinburgh and Glasgow (which, to be fair, is not a huge number) have been like that. Just don't expect to make any money, or not at first. If you are lucky enough to build a following out of town, you will get a bigger cut of the door spoils - petrol money at best! We have had really good experiences outside of Aberdeen, some of our best gigs - however we were lucky in that I know a lot of people who bring other people to gigs so the crowds were friendly. It was still mostly people who had never heard our music before.

It is worth contacting venues directly to see if they have any free slots, stereo/nice n' sleazys would be good places for bands that haven't played Glasgow before and Bannerman's in Edinburgh.

Gig swaps are fine if the other band hold up their end of the bargain. If you go that route I would suggest making sure that they have a gig you can play at already lined up before committing to get them up to Aberdeen. Been stung by that one before. Really nice guys but too much going on with their own band and probably being directed by other people more than anything.

  2. speakin of aka ska im due a wee jamboree with colin from said band when i return from the hills.... i miss ghost of bongo... are they still a band????

Technically we are still a band but in reality it has been about 2 months since we have played together. Split between two cities, although doable, is a logistic nightmare. The problems are amplified having a singer who works off-shore! Really want to kick-start it again. Oh yeah, and we are having drummer difficulty - in that we don't have one! We were just using whoever was available before two of the guys moved to Edinburgh. Ideally they will find someone down there, but I don't know how well that's going.

When we going to be doing some music then?

    Colin

  3. Didn't say if you were in the market for a hardware (digital) vocoder' date=' hardware (analog) vocoder, or a plug in vocoder.

What have you heard you're looking to emulate ?[/quote']

Got some recordings of our stuff where we've used a software vocoder to create a sort of synth type residue noise behind the vocals and would like to be able to do something like that in a live performance. Basically I'm most likely looking for a hardware digital vocoder due to my lack of portable computer. I wouldn't mind something that I could put my synth through. Been looking about and getting some research done but still hard to know what is worth getting - what capabilities I really need and are worth having for more extravagant uses.

  4. Really just a voice synth - it alters the out put of your voice via software or hardware - check out the 70s monster in Hog's post! Kraftwerk and Daft Punk are bands that use them heavily. I don't know much about how it works but like the effects you can create. There are other types of voice altering devices like talkbox - what Bon Jovi uses in living on a prayer. Reacts with the movements of you lips and mouth.

  5. Since I started booking gigs we really had to come up with a name quick so please welcome and come along to enjoy the newest and funkiest 12 piece band in Aberdeen:

    Soul Funkin Hot

    First confirmed gig is:

Saturday 25th November @ The Tunnels followed by Good Foot Club. I think entry will be 5 which includes entry to the club night after - Soul, Funk and Disco!

It is going to be awsome night.

Hope to see you all there.

  6. For those of you that have an interest in Aberdeen soul music, Souled Asylum recently split up due to differences in musical direction. This has allowed the majority of us to reformed under a different name with a different goal. (don't ask the name just yet as it has not been fully decided - by far the hardest task when starting a band!)

We have decided to downsize a lot on gear (understatement) and have fewer musicians so we can get back to a more raw and spontaneous sound - a bit more authentic and fun on stage. This also means that we can play smaller, more intimate gigs with a more diverse range of songs (possibly work in some original stuff - a bit further down the line). Only good things really. The fact that we have lost the use of an enormous PA worth a squiiiilion pounds does not phase us due to that fact that amazing soul music and bands have existed for a good while longer than such equipment became available!

Our new line up is still quite large but consists of:

5 brass (3 of whom switch between organ/piano/synth and harmonica)

    4 singers (1 male and 3 female)

    Bass

    Guitar

    Drums

I will put another post on this thread once we have decided on a name and then it is just a matter of coming along to watch!

Anybody wanting to hire a soul band please feel free to PM me, we will be ready (after an overhaul of songs) to gig in about October time.

  7. Come along to the Lemon Tree this Saturday night to get your fix of Granite Soul with SOULED ASYLUM.

    Try something different this weekend.

'Souled Asylum' are a soul/R&B band comprised of local musicians. With 4 singers, a 6-piece brass section and rock solid back line, they produce a non-stop, full blooded live stage-show which is without equal at local level.

They mainly play in and around the Aberdeen area at public, private, corporate and charity events and attract a strong following of loyal supporters

Careful rehearsal ensures quality performances with an energetic and polished stage show. Come along to one of their shows to experience an authentic live and gutsy soul atmosphere.

  8. Aka-Ska

    http://www.aka-ska.com

Come along and listen to classic Ska tunes and raise money for Staff and students from the University of Aberdeen who are participating in theTwin Gardens Expedition to the Harenna Forest in Ethiopia this summer, helping to develop conservation strategies for the unique flora andwildlife of this inhabited region.

Also throwing their cap down to raise the funds for this worthy cause are:

    Cheap Dirt

    Open Air

    Tumble Dryer Children

    DJ Dan

providing a reggae, roots & ska backdrop. Other bands tbc. Tickets are 3

at the door; 2 in advance from any aka-SKA band member

I'll get links to the other bands in a minute.

  9. one way round this would be to have explicit mutual arrangements with bands in other cities' date=' say in scotland first of all.

    1. form a collective with them (use myspace to organise it).

    2. invite them to play in aberdeen, with local bands supporting

    3. in return play in their city, supporting them.

if this was tried a few times we would soon know whether it would work, and was building something that would last, or if it was failing in practice.

    easy (on paper at least).[/quote']

We have only managed to get one band up from Glasgow purely because we had control over that gig. Now they are organising a gig for us in Glasgow and have become decent mates with them. We will go down and be able to take advantage of their fan base as well as our own Glasgow fans (we do have some!). It could create more of a community spirit to intercity music rather than as individual places. Need to make it a lot easier for out of town bands to play in Aberdeen.

I would definately go and watch a Glasgow Invasion night in Aberdeen.
