The deckhands / roustabouts (who basically carry heavy shit around all day and do stuff like painting and scaffolding) get paid a fuck of a lot more than they would for doing unskilled work onshore.

Not a fortune, but more than a lot of people get for doing graduate or skilled jobs onshore. It's hard work like, 2 weeks on the rig, 12 hours a day with no days off.

still not massive wages however you look at it. trainee cementers start on about 15k.

BP have grounded all Bond flights and are using Scotia for flights today. The penny pinching that's been going on in the industry lately i.e major operators asking all contractors to go back to 2004/'2005 rates - depending on who you believe, just isn't good for safety. Theres pressure from above to do the same job for less money due to the price of a barrel. We weren't given massive bonuses when the oil price rocketed but when it dips - cuts ahoy!

i'm on a bp rig at the minute and we just got an email from senior bp management saying that 8 bodies have been recovered. 16 were on the flight.

not good at all wife just said yesterday that she wants me to work onshore.

think ours will be a west of scotland jaunt. log cabin somewhere most probably. did the same in aviemore last year and had a great time - quite expensive but really nice scenery and very relaxing. kids loved the wildlife too. never really done the west coast before so think it's time.
