  1. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a gig! I can now die happy having seen Slash playing live.

Scott Weiland is a great frontman. Camp as Christmas, as all great frontmen are. And he looked fucking ace in the police cap and shades. And Slash and Duff couldn't NOT look ace.

Slither, Fall To Pieces, Sucker Train Blues, Big Machine and Set Me Free were all astounding. Especially Slither.

Just a shame they didn't play You Got No Right and Dirty Little Thing, which are, in my opinion, two of the best tracks on the ablum, and certainly better than Spectacle which they played.

But still, fucking awesome gig. Some great cover versions too, although it would have been nicer if they'd played the whole album.

  2. So you have the Dedalus/Politik EP and missed Arctik yet you can run down the Born Solo set as much as this. Are you drunk again? :p

As a matter of fact' date=' I'd been downing pints of water all night only. So nyer nyer :p

Basically, Dedalus were awesome (and I mean that in the proper sense of the word, nae the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sense), and I thought Born Solo were absolutely terrible. They reminded me of exactly why I used to regard local bands as shite. [i']BUT THIS IS ONLY AN OPINION!!!!!!!!!!

Don't really agree with that. They were clearly good musicians.

My only advice for Born Solo would be to either gag the drummer during gigs or get rid of him. Having a drummer that shouts abuse at the band and the crowd (what little there was) and orders the frontman around on stage during the set can never be helpful.

Dedalus were ace again. As for their lack of songs' date=' they do have more but I guess they thought it would be fun to play both versions of burn last night.[/quote']

Hmmm... I didn't see anything last night that would make me think they were good musicians... like I said (in too much detail), they absolutely butchered Man In A Box, and it's not even a particularly hard song. Especially when you just make up a shit solo like they did. And their own songs were the kind of basic stuff I used to bugger about with when I had just started out playing guitar.

The kind of stuff I would play once and think, "Oh my god, that's so shite..."

But if they were to read my criticsim, take it on the chin, and use it to improve, then fair play to them. This is surely the point of a feedback forum, no? I'm maybe being a little harsh, but I either like something or I hate it.

However, you're spot on about the drummer. He was an anus.

As for Dedalus, I thought it was a bit weird that they'd only have four songs. In that case, I cannae wait for the next gig to hear what else they've got.

My sister counted just 15 people at the gig... that was a disgrace. They deserve to be playing to much bigger crowds.

  3. Missed the first band, Arctik or whatever they're called, so nowt to say about them.

Born Solo: Oh if only they'd never been born at all. Arf arf.

First song was pretty shit. Basic Nirvana wannabe stuff. The singer even thinks he's Kurt Cobain, with the "I don't care" screeching. However, even Kurt Cobain was more in tune than this guy. Second song sounded like it was called The Fishing Song, although I'm sure it wasn't. Same again, although it somehow managed to be worse. Did they play a third song? Who knows. But what followed next almost had me in tears.

"This is an Alice In Chains song. man In A Box."

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo...............................

A complete massacre of one of the finest songs by one of my favourite bands. For a start it would appear they don't actually own Facelift, because if they did they would know that this sounded very little like the said song. Man In A Box has a classic AIC chugging heavy riff. This guitarist played it like someone who didn't know what a palm mute was. And the singer? The only time I could hear him clearly was when he squealed "SHIT." He was obviously impressed that he was swearing in front of 10 people. No one else was. And the solo?????? I played this song for the first time about a month ago on my guitar, and my first attempt was better than this. And I'm a shit guitarist. This was just wrong.

Then came a Nirvana cover (shock!) which was attempted a bit better, but only because it was an easy song (dunno the name of it, but it's one of the ones off Incesticide).

The rest of the songs were in the same vein, ie terrible attempts at rewriting the entire Nirvana back catalogue, and failing miserably. Oh, and a terrible cover of Tourette's, which is probably the worst song off In Utero. Oh but it's such a FUNNY song to cover...

    Advice for this band:

    1) Buy a CD that isn't by Nirvana (they'd obviously only borrowed Facelift off someone).

    2) Remind the singer that he is from Aberdeen, SCOTLAND, not Aberdeen, Washington. Hence, he shouldn't try to sing like Kurt Cobain. False American accents sound exactly that: false.

    3) LEARN TO PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENTS. I couldn't really hear much of the "solos", but I could tell by just watching their fingers that they were pish solos.

    4) Remind the drummer that growing your hair long and hitting the drums like a madman does NOT make you Dave Grohl. And it certainly doesn't make you cool.

    5) Get some fucking charisma! Three "men" at the front, but no frontman.

    Alternatively, just give up. Please.

    Anyway.....

Dedalus: Fucking hell, if Born Solo were chalk, then these guys are cheese. And I'm talking the finest edam cheese in the whole of Holland. First song Burn started off with a bit of guitar, then drums, then excellent vocals, and then the bass. This song is immense. I was actually blown away... the wall of sound the two guitarists create is just so intense. And Stephen's vocals are astounding. To speak to him in One Up, you'd never guess he had such a brilliant set of lungs.

Anyway, then came the three EP songs, sounding even more intense live than they do on the EP. And they were performed perfectly. If you don't already have the Dedalus/Politik EP, then you must go out and get it. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, last song was Burn again, although this time it ended with Dave Officer pulling some nice guitar shapes, Stephen taking a fit (not literally, that would be hideous) and a nice wee drum solo. These guys will SURELY be headlining Leeds this time next year, as long as they write some more tunes of this impeccable standard. That was the only downfall of the gig, the lack of songs. Maybe a couple of covers thrown in would have been nice. Or even playing the EP songs again. But that's just nitpicking.

Apologies if that all sounds a bit back-slappy, but I honestly couldn't fault this performance.

  4. its just really really dull and insipid that so many musicians would rather try and be Aberdeen's answer to Blink 182 or Funeral For A Friend or whatever rather than just stand out from the crowd and be their own band.

This is EXACTLY why I initially thought that Aberdeen had no decent bands, because pretty much every one I had heard was trying to be Blink 182 or Funeral For A Friend.

Take My Mind's Weapon for instance. Musically, they've got some good stuff, although it IS a carbon copy of Funeral For A Friend. But the problems really start with the singing, which is a BAD imitiation of FFAF, especially the dreadful shouting backing vocals. That's worse than the weedyish faux-Amercian lead vocals.

But then you've got a band like Dedalus (who I'm gonna go see in a minute) who are truly excellent in every way, from the vocals (note to aspiring singers: he's not trying to sound Amercian), to the drumming and basslines (simple but effective) to the guitars (not overly fiddly or supah doopah fast, but they sound delicately intricate). Sound a bit like Interpol or Idlewild, but better. And THAT'S what people should be aspiring to.

Why bother if you're not going to try and IMPROVE on your influences?

Needing no introduction to Aberdeen audiences' date=' Josephine return to the Lemon Tree after a successful T-in The Park slot with the follow-up to the their acclaimed first album This Is Not An Advertisement.

Drawing comparisons with Patti Smith and Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Cuts ever-increasing fan base can look forward to the imminent release of their debut album.

Little Kicks and Stanley complete an adventurous lineup of left-field talent united by the sound of the citys trailblazing Exile Studio.[/quote']

Is it this one you're talking about, cos there's nothing on the calendar for the 15th.

  6. Oooh' date=' you like?

i'd plug their album launch gig here, but shambolically, I can't remeber off the top of my head when it is..Lemon Tree, next month, wednesday 15th i do believe?

(and yes, shockingly, i spotted all four members of them in Moshulu last night..and they looked drunk)[/quote']

Well assuming it's a decent price, I'll pop along to see for myself.

  7. Cuts - contact them through the pub. :D

(in case you're wondering which pub - any pub will do' date=' they're bound to visit it sooner rather than later)[/quote']

I downloaded a couple of Cuts tracks after seeing a link on your sig a while back. Pretty decent. The singer reminds me of Kristin Hersh slightly.

  8. Wow' date=' you're into Mr Bungle too??????

California and the self titled are two of my all time faves.[/quote']

You missed a couple of exclaimation marks there :p

Yeah Mr Bungle are cool. I'm nae sure which of the three I prefer yet cos I've nae listened to them really properly, cos I keep buying CDs before I've properly listned to the last ones I bought. But it's all good.

  9. ...I bought the first tomahawk album' date=' as well as the fantomasmelvins big band cd from HMV. I have found both HMV and Virgin to have quite good stock really, if a little pricey sometimes. I'd hardly say they are obscure when they are featured in Kerrang! magazine (shudder) and sell out european tours. yes[/quote']

    Argh!! Stop making me wrong!!!!

Okay, when I say nobody's heard of them, I'm referring to my mates.

The important thing is that Tomahawk are ace.

  10. Wow' date=' you're into Mr Bungle too????????

    Big Patton fan! Love Tomahawk![/quote']

    Haha!!!! Nice one.

Patton is ace. His voice is... well, ace. And his crowd abuse at gigs is also...... ace.

Hummer' date=' yes music is ace,

but, here is a question, r u the person in your avatar?[/quote']

Aye I am. How come like?

i wouldn't say tomahawk and mr bungle are the most obscure bands you could listen to be honest' date=' mind you i wouldn't even think of saying they were mundane or dull either. um, so yea... music, it's ace yea? aye.[/quote']

Oh aye, totally. I mean Tomahawk are only obscure in as much as you can't buy their CDs in Virgin or HMV. There's nowt obscure about a band that consists of a drummer, bassist, guitarist and singer who come up with ace riffs. But then ace riffs make me a happy man.

  11. *views profile* Ah right. So you have a completely mundane and dull taste in music. Well done.

Yes that's right. That's why everyone I speak to says "Tomahawk? Oh I've heard of them."

    Except that they don't.

Same goes for many of my bands unfortunatley. But hey, I doubt there's gonna be many folk on here saying "Wow, you're into Mr Bungle too????????" so I don't bother.

    *collapses into bed*

  12. Not when it's executed by bands from Aberdeen. I was gonna use the word "created" there' date=' but "executed" sounds much more appropriate for what these bands do for music.[/quote']

Fuck, that makes it sound like you think music begins and ends with Aberdeen!

    Who floats your boat then?

  13. No the new singer has quite a vaired style of vocals. He uses melody a lot more' date=' although he does sound like mike patton from time to time his vocals are still very strong.[/quote']

    Ahhhh excellent!

I'd have been buying the new ablum regardless, but it's good to know anyway.

  14. I don't know if you'd like them but the dilllinger escape plan are very relevant in certain circles of new music. Their new album may be the best bet if you wanted to check them out

Is the new singer like the one on the first album? Cos the vocals on Calculating Infinity are the only let down for me.

But then Irony Is A Dead Scene was my first taste of DEP. And no one can live up to the standards of Patton :)
