Ween - now there's a clever, funny and genuinely brilliant band.

Theres nothing about Devo to ''get''....its just electronic pop ....and Kraftwerk are the same except more instrumental and erm.... German and totally guitarless

and Sparks, Foxx, DAF and The Human League ETC

    all just total pop

influential cos they were among the first to do it

you can get most of it at woolworths probably - where all the 'elitist vinyl jockeys' hang out *chortle*

seen em all hanging round the Big W at the weekend

    the fucking wanks

funny how metal fans always get scared at anything that doesn't involve long hair, greasy skin and leather/denim jackets

dont forget the ''all metal fans are virgins'' theory either sir

and the latent gayness of worshipping hairy old men in tight pants!

  3. i kinda like some of their stuff but not all if you know what i mean

they were good on the tele last week

sometimes they sound like they are trying to hard to be .........urban (a swear word in this house)

current single is wee peach though......jilted john meets parklife

  4. its way better than the thrills......a better song than those lot could muster and a fantastic piano which really sets it apart....can see the late 60s beatles/kinks vibe too

does your other stuff have piano in it also?

  5. tis very good indie pop (like the the thills but much less sickly)

but i still reckon the best download on the exile site is le cuts like...it the only one that really gets stuck in me head

Marky has been doing some good stuff lately

the live parts of the real shocks album are getting done there and its sounding dead good so far. Certainly the best drum sound we've got anywhere (including several 'posh' studios down south)

yes but only within the set parameters which to me are generally limiting

but im not being specific about said units in question as I dont know them inside out...they might be fantastic

    so who knows

its just that generally, Ive found the Boss/Roland/Yamaha ranges of gear to be quite 1 dimensional and kinda predictable sounding.....you will have invariably heard the same sounds before - usually in a crowded guitar shop on a saturday afternoon....but rarely on a decent record

you could try this site for a few more sonic options www.musictoyz.com

  7. I sometimes use a Mooger Fooger Ring Modulator on my Guitar at gigs if I can be arsed......its not a synth but merely part of one....real anolog circuits, flashing lights and big knobs etc

It sounds like a thousand pissed off alien skinheads kicking in your front door and usually sends the soundman running to the bogs for a huge poo

Also used a Line 6 synth effect in a studio on the guitar and that was quite good too

.. sometimes I use run a guitar signal into an old semi funkional Moog synth and squelch it beyond recognition or put moody little LFO effects on it......sounds psychedelic

guitars that sound like synths and synths that sound like guitars....is all good

och, they're all bloody fantastic it goes without saying

Man Machines got the best sleeve for sure

and showroom dummies is a truly cool track (and quite scary)

but what swings it for me is the extended album instrumental bit on Computor Love.......total genius (even though its from the 80s and therfor bugger all to do with this thread)

i reckon computor world is better than Trans Europe - but maybe CW came out the 80s....dunno

  10. Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts - The Adverts

Live at the Witch Trials - The Fall

Never Mind The Bollocks - Pistols

    Electric Warrior - TRex

Another Music in a Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks

    Arrival - ABBA

    Killing Joke - Killing Joke

A Trip to Marineville - Swell Maps

    V2 - The Vibrators

    etc.......

one could not possibly pick just one

and most of the early stuff involving Roxy Music, Bowie, Iggy and Mr Thunders from the first half of the decade

    some decade

see that banter..... its generic to all 'garage rock' bands apparently (file under: The Hives) and especially ones from scandanavia

they must all have the same 'training video'

its also popular at Butlins on Karaoke nite...many a time have I imagined wee Dave in a red blazer wearing a spinning bow tie (but thats where the fantasy ends...)

but thats the only bad thing about the needles imo.....the banter and the obvious bruce springsteen posturing ....but the music is generally way too groovy to worry about that.....although I still think they were better when they were raw snot nosed punky kids and never said a word to the audience (circa 98/99 i think).....awesome

i once drunkenly told them they should try and go down a more JSBX angular route (when they were in that odd elvis costello phase) and offered to produce them in a such a way for free......but that was a very long time ago....and its too late now cos every garage band in the universe has done it already

    pah

  12. i know shitloads about it

but i cant be fucked to explain the whole thing in non specifics cos it would take ages and my information is generally unreliable

but compoota sequencing and recording etc has recently come of age in my opinion....it used to be too expensive and totally unreliable resulting in malevolant violence towards PCs from anyone who tried it

theres a couple of good mags to read that will help you get into le subject

Computor Music, Future Music and Sound on Sound.....all in WH Smiths

they cost about a fiver each so i recommend you slip em inside and NME and and nick em or just stand in the shop for 3 hours reading them all like I do. I even take a notebook sometimes for reference notes/websites etc

It seems complicated to start with but with a bit of research its piss easy

AVOID PC WORLD COMET AND DIXONS

  13. drum machines in 'rock' music are generally shit live, and are only occasionally good on records

but they sound fantastic when used on the right type of song in le right context

and drum machines should sound like drum machines....these fucking drum machines that do a wanky impersonation of a real drummer are giving beatboxes a bad name.....most chart records feature them and they still put a token 'miming' drummer at the back of the stage on TOTP or MTV whatever

they might as well just miss out the whole live experience and e-mail you an MP3

*switches on Roland CR8000 as an example of how a drum machine should sound*

    listen

    doof - tssssh - rest - doof - doof - tssssh - rest - repeat

    gorgeous!

but real drummers (the good ones anyway) are much more entertaining despite the mental problems, latent alchoholism, sex offences, prescription fraud etc
