  1. see i always thought electronica was people like fischerspooner, felix da house cat lady tron etc (only know my mainstream) but obviously im wrong there for sure, cause i wouold respect the fact that stripey knows his stuff.

i always thought people like kid koala, kid 606, boards of canada were IDM. but i guess theres sub genres and IDM is one under electronica... anyway i really shouldn't embarras myself any longer in the subject.

i'd say geogaddi is my favourite boards canada LP out of the two i have. I found 'music has the right to children' was much more beat orientated still really good, but im much more into interesting synth and sample sounds hence why i enjoy geogaddi, i'd like to get some aphex twin don't really know much of the stuff im sure dave can sort me out on that score.

and i'd agree with some squarepusher is quite nice, but also really interesting.

  2. hmmm. dont agree saw them with the xcerts one time. dancy (as in you could dance to them) very good performance, but the music was actually pretty boring... cant imagine what they'd be like on cd... i guess they could have got better since the date of that gig i went to... i guess ska is not really my thing.

  3. A Written Apology are a five piece technical metalcore band from Dundee. we take influences from bands such as Heartscarved' date=' Norma Jean, Angels Never Answer, Underoath, Dead Blue Sky, Prayer for Cleansing etc.

We have been around for around 4 months, and have just finished recording our first demo CD, with Robin "Mrlizard" Sutherland. one of the tracks, "Blue Eyes and Burials", is up for download on our HXCMP3 page:

    [url']http://www.hxcmp3.com/A_Written_Apology

we greatly appreciate any constructive criticism, feedback etc. for anyone interested, the demo is available, free of charge, by e-mailing awrittenapologymusic@hotmail.com, ormyself. in the next month or so we'll be playing in Edinburgh with Narcosis, Ix, and Black, and several dates in and around Dundee. we're looking for out of town shows, so if you have a place for us on a bill at any point we'd be more than happy to fill the gap.

thank you for reading, I look forward to some feedback.

hey whats the music scene like in dundee, venues and such like. do you have a range of genres there?

  4. Agreed about the music press. i can't be bothered with it most of the time either, its just handy for websites and a few other things while reviews just don't mean anything anymore apart from if someone gets 2/10 its surely going to be crap.

jazz is great. i can't play it either, just think it up in my head. metal is good for that too... you could make a whole prog metal song sitting on the toilet. its great fun. ehm.. too much

  5. I wonder how many people haven't bought a CD because the same label released some other ones at the same time?

I don't think it would matter' date=' especially considering, as several people have pointed out, the diversity in the releases.[/quote']

see that is interesting because i couldn't really see myself buying any fat hippy stuff i havn't heard because of the record labels 'music taste' (the other bands i have heard that are on their label)

but i do think theres nothing with saying it is shit, becuase i agree. that only sayings i don't like the music they put out. as far as opportunaties go fat hippy are the only company with the experience? but i don't know that for sure, dont really know my local labels.

  6. thrak' date=' one of the recent lp's, was pretty crazy, I remember putting it on in one up...didn't last long...

I can see where TOOL got their later works "inspiration" from...[/quote']

i think they did well with that inspiration. the salival record is quite damn good, although i heard they weren't as consistant live as it seems.

  7. cheers lepeep.

god i hope dundee has something other than fucking bad metal going on. otherwise i could be on my own for some considerable time when i move there. although i guess im sure to meet some interesting people at uni. does dundee have any clubs like deen? i know we're pretty well off when it comes to choice here but im sure theres some sort of musical entertainment in every city.

  8. I was joking about the serious comment. These boards... humour never travels in text.

I saw the results of that night' date=' nasty. I've always remembered Stoney to be a rough as fuck place to go out in. It was sketchy when I used to go out there, and puts me off going back.[/quote']

    touche.

indeed it aint much fun... but theres ways round it here and there. i guess once the bad guys have bothered you once they dont seem to try anything again. its strange but that seems to be the way it is.

  9. ah............... serious can still be fun i guess.

yeh well that night he got head butted and got himself a huge gash across the eye. and he'd been drinking so he couldn't drive home, although he did anyway in the morning but he couldn't have got much sleep cause we all went to bed about 5 30 ish. and he slept on top of the bedding with his clothes on. hes a true surfer.

  10. This is a good point. Playing live is instant feedback on your product. Immediately you can see if people are loving it' date=' quite enjoying it, bearing it or heading for the door. Ive had the full range in my time, and now feel I have a better understanding of how to improve my own music, while still doing what I want for myself. This is true for watching gigs, as well as playing them.

I notice about Stripeys tunes is, while admirable, they dont move me in any way. They have no feeling. Maybe this is why. They sound like the music of someone who doesnt understand how to make an audience feel something, make a real live connection. I know youve not been to many gigs, Stripey, but what about club nights, live Dj sets etc? Would be difficult to convey a feeling youve never experienced. Just a thought...[/quote']

interesting point. because i do feel something is coming from somewhere in his songs, this ambience that has been mentioned. its there but i think it couold be stronger and more powerful.

i guess if you practiced enough with a sampler and a keyboard plus a drum machine you could actually turn out a set featuring one of you songs turning into an improvised set. but of course it could just end up sounding like dance if it didn't vary... definitely would be a challenge.

  11. excellent, wouldn't mind hearing some live stuff of theres... never really looked past 'in the court of the crimson king' my uncle suggested the 'red' album, something like that anyway. but perhaps later, im going through a bit a of a brit pop/shoegaze phase at the moment.

  12. yes! basically i know what you mean' date=' you can hear a synth, and a synth automatically equates to boards of canada, because youv probably heard them once or twice.

now secondly, even though boards use synths, they use real vinatge ones, which then get sampled and messed up. which is what gives them theyr unique sound. stripey does nothing like this from what i heard of the mp3. its straight forward ambient dnb sort of stuff.

and for the record this is mediocre music made by millions of people, lets just admit it.

    its good, but nothing special.[/quote']

well actually i have heard boards a lot more than 'once or twice' thank you very much. i think stripey has done more than loops, how many of the tracks of his did you download... one or two... i listened to them all. i think hes actually played around with it quite a bit, not as much as say squarepusher or aphex twin would but ofcourse. lets not be silly. the guys still developing himself as an artist.

i'm not really getting graemeC's point. it was a lame example, not to have been taken seriously, maybe its just the way it sounds when you read it.

    whatever.

  13. yeh i know..... i was just making an example of a concept... (ehm) plus you dont have to be influenced by someone to sound like them, it could just end up that way. silly billy. anyway its all good regardless.

  14. yeh i just downloaded the tracks. very good.

but its just like listening to boards of canada really, not much difference apart from the boards are better.

i was going to get into some IDM myself. but the instruments and recording software are quite basic but enough to make a tune or two...

but you certainly have talent my friend, i'd like to think you'd use it for greater good, and get yourself some originality (im not being as harsh as it sounds) maybe go back to the 80's within what you work with, a bit of old school. i duno... but keep going...

  15. hookers green are on the nomad A|M compilation you'll see it in one up somewhere. they kinda sound like 33.3 as well. but still really nice to listen to.

i myself am going to start playing shows, i tink you can do a lot with guitar, a lot moer than you think... i discovered a couple of things myself which sounds interesting they may have already been found but i guess i've got my own angle on it.

im really looking forward to people experiencing dave lovell. me and him are recording each other, sort of producing... his stuff is sounding so good, i think hes a really great musician. writes really nice songs, he sounds like bright eyes with a flash of sort red house painters style guitar, its really nice.

another band to watch out for if they do get into the swing is sandcastles. i heard a snipit about 15-20 seconds and i loved it. duno if they are planning on having a show or not. i think aberdeen lacks pop. sort of alt indie pop. the shins then to another side PULP. twould be great to see something else apart from heavy guts.
