  1. The first pressing of the DVD of Howl's moving castle came with an actual frame from the film used in theatres. Totally unique.

Havn't checked' date=' so i dunno if there's still available, where i saw it was [url']www.play-asia.com. 90 dollars is too much for me though... It's still on pre-order till Nov 19th, so maybe there still is.

Those JPN imports are damn expensive. Superb sets though.

  2. I agree that dubbing can be an alternative for people put off by reading subtitles (which is just plain lazy IMO).

However it also allows those who physically cannot read to enjoy foreign titles. For instance, I know one guy who has a twentysomething year old autistic son. His son is a really bright guy but unfortunately can't read - so dubs are the only option for him to watch these films.

Actually, reading your message, I guess we both just said the same thing. :D

  3. You serious? Man you're one expert DVD collector... can't believe I typed all that out lol.

Alas the only thing I have is:

The Big Swindle - South Korean film.

    Review here: click

If that doesn't appeal to you. I'll try and dig through my collection for some stuff. I'm determined to get your DVDs.

I place a 15 value on this DVD. Instead, would you like to trade it for the two Shaws + Miller's Crossing?

Depends on if you like Hellboy of course.

  5. Sky Blue is Korean isn't it? Is there a big difference in the style of anime compared to Japanese?

Aye it's South Korean. Visually it looks impressive' date=' a subtle blend of handrawn 2D and 3D CGI animation. The style isn't as exagerated as Japanese anime (smaller eyes), but there is a distinct Far Eastern flavour. The amount of detail is staggering but the film really needs a good plot.

Note that Sky Blue is the UK title... everywhere else, it's called Wonderful Days.

  6. It's based on a book of the same name by Diana Whynne Jones' date=' she did magical kids stories way before JK Rowling, and is still going. I cannot wait to see this film, I adore Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki's films. They are all great fun and very touching not to mention beautifully made. Did anyone see The Cat Returns at the Belmont last month?

Is the Belmont showing the dubbed or subbed version of Howl's Moving Castle, anyone know?[/quote']

Just phoned the Belmont and it's subtitles all the way! :D

If Cineworld are anything like UGC, then they will most likely show the dubbed version.

Don't know about you, but I'm gonna see this at the Belmont for sure.

I watched Sky Blue the other day (aka Wonderful Days) - was shocked that Belmont were showing it dubbed.

Details on the legal Japanese DVD

Cheers OP for starting this thread. :D

  7. I buy way too many DVDs' date=' the last lot i got was

    The Last Picture Show

    Murder By Death

    The Life Aquatic

    Ong Bak and

    Danny the Dog[/quote']

    Yes!!! Good taste there.

Please tell me you bought the uncut version of Ong-bak?

I just watched Danny the Dog - it's a masterpiece, absoltuely wonderful. Weird how it's filmed and set in Glasgow, but it's populated with cockneys...

btw, I urge you to watch Born to Fight (if you enjoyed Ong-Bak). Another mental Thai title made from the same film crew.

  8. Despite featuring same actors and cinematographer, this film is not Exorcist: The Beginning.

This is the original version before Renny Harlin was hired to rape the movie into the latter, to make it fit for the nu-ass generation - providing cheap frights for no apparant reason.

Well after the failure of "The Beginning", the producers decided to give the original director, Paul Schrader, a second try. They gave him enough money to finish off the title as it was meant to be. The result is not a director's cut or a re-edit - it is a completely different movie.

Paul Schrader was there at the UK premier, to make comments and answer some questions. The film itself was entertaining. Not perfect but an admirable attempt at a spritual drama. The CGI effects were ropey but I believe that was due to budget restraints. I felt really sorry for Paul, by the way he was treated in the industry. He's still very upset about it.

However this provides a perfect compare and contrast discussion for two separate films, revolving around the same story.
