  1. From what you describe the cause could be other wireless networks near you. A lot of things can interfere with wireless networks (cordless phones, baby monitors, microwaves etc) but these wouldn't give you consistent failures like you describe.

Have a look at the available wireless connections near you. If you see any Sky ones then they are almost certainly set to the same wireless channel. Have a look on T'internet and find out how to change your wireless channel on your router and try a few different ones, see if that gives you a more consistent connection.

  2. There's quite a few of these scams going around. Basically the same deal, get remote access, infect the PC or hide data, ask for a sum of cash to put right something that wasn't wrong before they called. Some claim to be from microsoft themselves. The most prolific one that I know of seems to be based in India.

Never reply to spam ( it's not even a good idea to open them, depending on your email security settings), if they know the email account is active they can sell your email address to other spammers.

  3. Some lovely goals there.

Shocking tackle by Van Bommel in the first half though.

My mate saw the odds on the 3-2 scoreline (28/1) and never bet on it, even though it jumped out at him. He looked well sick in ET cos he had HT draw and FT Holland and thought Uruguay might just sneak an equaliser, thus destroying his non-bet and his good bet.

Does anyone have any idea why the ref played 1:54 more ET than the assistant indicated?????

  4. Why does hot water clean things better than cold water?

Heat is basically molecules vibrating faster. If they vibrate faster then it's all the more likely that a bit of agitation will free the bonds to it's fellow molecules.

The main benefit of hot water over cold is that it vibrates fat molecules to the point where they liquefy.Basically turning them into oil.

Oil is not soluble in water. Detergent has one end of the molecule soluble in oil and the other in water. It works by covering the surface of the oil, basically coating it in a water-soluble 'paint', so it can dissolve in the water rather than reattach itself to what you want cleaned.

Agitation breaks the oil droplets up into even smaller ones, increasing the surface area and allowing more detergent molecules to attach themselves to the oil.

  5. Oh, I meant for his handball which got Edu's first goal disallowed. I know he was booked for that tackle.

    Ah, I see.

I don't see why he would've been carded for the handball. It was definitely a foul but I didn't see anything deliberate about it.

  6. It looked to me like Lafferty jerked his head back as if he'd been butted/punched again (not quite as blatantly as he did with Mulgrew though). He should get a lengthy ban for simulation.

And he has previous for the same thing.

Shameful display from him, yet again.

The sooner they take in lengthy bans for "simulants" the better.

I'm not particularly in favour of stopping the game to review things like that, but I am in favour of retrospective banning (and rescinding of banning) when cock-munchers like him play the ref and not the ball.

  7. A quick google threw this up:

"It may be that its a deliberate echo of Brutuss comment, in Julius Caesar: There is a Tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the Flood, leads on to Fortune, or it may at least be taken from the same idea of a ship, say, waiting for the tide to rise and carry it over the bar into a harbour."

I like the Shakespeare quote, because "tide you over" is normally used when someone is having a bad spell, but they already know their fortune is going to change for the better sometime soon.

The phrase isn't first recorded until 1860 though.

There's also a similar wording "tie you over". I don't know which came first but if the original phrase was tie you over then the above suggestions are null and void.

  8. what i feel is needed in the places around aberdeen, is an atmosphere that makes you want to record and write, as i have recorded in Toms and MV and i just haven't felt right doing it,

you feel rushed and that the engineer just wants you to get it over with.

So a place with an awesome atmosphere would be what i think is needed.

You can take as long as you want, as long as you're prepared to pay for it.

The reason you might be feeling rushed is because they are budget studios. I call them budget not because of the (relatively speaking) low budget for studio equipment. It's because most people who record there are on very limited budgets.

Most people underestimate the amount of time required as well.

Engineers will try to keep the session moving fast so that the project can be completed as close to the budget as possible. You never know when a problem is going to arise so you've got to be on top of things from the off.

If you want a more relaxed session tell them that's what you want and wave some wonga in front of their face.

  9. The single one is a bit rubbish, unless you have a laptop I suppose. I can see that faceplate getting lost very easily though, and I wouldn't want to run power through it without it in case of liquid spillage.

The 3 way adapter is awesome though. It's not just the space it saves but the fact that all the cables are going in one direction and in the same area. The fact that you can plug all connectors separately for troubleshooting adds to it's appeal.

  10. In that case, I'd recommend Boda and also Victoria - both are on Leith Walk, about two thirds of the way down. Both run by the same people, only two blocks apart, with a fine selection of drinks, decent music and a good relaxed atmosphere.

I am aware of them, been in Victoria a few times meeting people. I'm pretty sure the same couple own PJs on Elm Row as well.

Unfortunately being >40 now, I feel a bit out of place amongst the arty 20 somethings that frequent them.

And they're a good bit further away than the shore is, I'm just off Henderson Street.

  11. The King's Wark is a couple of minutes from my flat. Might check that out at some point soon, been looking for a pub (other than the one I work in) where a stab-vest isn't necessary if you don't have a Leith passport.

  12. To register for the fiver kickback. Would a band not need to be a registered company or something? Taxman informed etc... it is earnings after all and some bands play Aberdeen every 3-4days so there entitlement could mount up! haha

You just need to be the songwriter. Whether you pay tax on it or not doesn't matter a jot to the PRS. A photocopy of your passport (or birth certificate, can't remember exactly) and the bank details for getting the cash is all you need to give them iirc (oh, and a tenner).

Technically you should inform the IR, but since you'll almost certainly be running the band at a loss ...(keep all strings, practices, equipment, petrol, van hire etc receipts/invoices and they'll soon see you aren't running at a profit if they come a knockin')

  13. I think this small event thing is fairly new, I've never heard of it before.

Certainly worth a look for any bands that play their own material live (it's the songwriter that gets the cash, not the performers) on a regular basis(10 gigs minimum per year). You might even get a wee bit for having a song broadcast on SHMU FM, certainly for being played on northsound.

Not a lot of dough, but very little work required (inform them you've played and give them the setlist is about it) and the 10 membership is for life I think.

  14. Wirelessly posted (LG-GC900/V10a Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

Well if it's a fiver per gig and we've played two gigs where we've been asked for details of our set by the PRS, then we're due a tenner. Yes! Daddy needs a new set of guitar strings.

Except it might cost you that 10 to register, and that particular gig is too far in the past to qualify. In fact if you apply for membership now it's only retroactive until 1st jan.

On the other hand it's all insanely complicated and an email to the PRS might be a good idea.

For the small gig scheme it's only a tenner to register and as long as you play 10 gigs a year you qualify. Have a nosey at the website, although be warned, it's about as complicated as their rules.(btw, at a fiver a gig that's free money on offer there)

  15. Right, but where is the money coming from?

Exactly! that size of gig is around 3% of the door iirc. Split that between what, 4 bands leaves 0.75% per band, minus PRS admin fee. Less than 0.75% of a few hundred quid is hardly going to equate to 1600 in fees paid out.

If it does, does anyone fancy forming a band?

  16. According to the PRS, the money due from one of these randomly selected small events (pubs, clubs etc) is about a fiver. Since it costs a minimum of a tenner to register I don't see why it would be worth it.

400 is someone having a laugh. Maybe they want you to sign over all your rights to them, probably with a cunningly worded contract. Personally I'd hit the delete/spam button on my email.

  17. Yassssssssssssssssssssss

You sir, are incorrect. It was the decision that should have been made in the first instance. For all the club have made a mighty embarassing hash of things, the original punishment was not proportional to the crime. There is absolutely no precedent for throwing a side out of the tournament for fielding an inelegible player. Indeed, the precedent is very much a replay and a fine. Brechin were kicked out a few years ago, but they fielded TWO inelegible players and tried to get away with their error.

The precedent is even clearer than that: Brechin were originally only caught for one ineligible player and a replay was ordered, they were only booted out when the second ineligible player came to light.

  18. I thought the extra games ban was a little harsh - an "appeal dismissed" and "don't do this again" would have been more fitting no?

Not harsh at all. It's the penalty for an unsuccessful appeal and they knew that before they appealed.

The 3 match ban=don't do it again

The extra one match ban=stop wasting our time.
