  1. He did really well, the judges just weren't giving him any points. The Chinese guy was pretty good though, can't take any of his points away from him but it was harsh on Cook.

A lot of the judging has been dreadfully biased towards the Chinese - whether the judges are bowing to the crowd or external pressures, I don't know. There's been a fair few cases that I've seen where I've been left thinking "eh..how?".

The impression I'm getting from talking to European friends is that there's a overwhelming feeling that the Chinese have cheated their way to success.

  2. Anyone watch the BMX races? they were absolutely mental, every race had a decent crash of some sort. I'd ridiculed the inclusion beforehand, but it was absolutely brilliant :)

  3. I feel like you should kinda stop whining like a bitch.

Is there a need to bring personal abuse into this?

Pointing out where he's wrong, giving him some helpful advice is great..but don't abuse the guy simply for being naive. Maybe by posting constructive rebuttals, he might give the East Neuk/Moorings another shot.

And anyway, you do enough whining when you get negative reputation points. Don't throw stones when in a glass house and all that ;)

  4. Another one depriving this web site of funding then. :moody:

You know, I didn't realise that I was doing this..it just didn't occur, I've been using Adblock Plus so long that it just doesn't sink in that they're actually being blocked.

But I've disabled it for aberdeen-music, it's the decent thing to do :)

edit : What am I supposed to be seeing, ad-wise? I've got the banner ads at the top, but nothing else.

  5. the moorings is actually quite nice yeah take that back, but i do prefer playing in the venues much nearer union street, like tunnels or drummonds, i turned down a gig in east neuk, coz i feel like im gonna get an STI just from being there!

Come on, what's the distance from Union Street to the Moorings? It's about a 3 minute walk at the most...and you're always guaranteed an audience in The Moorings, unlike Drummonds or Tunnels.

I notice that you're actively looking for gigs by including that (Gigs?) next to your band name...might be wise not to slag off other venues if you're actively looking for them rather than the gigs coming to you :)

  6. Set of 22g precision Targets, nothing too fancy. Will be trying them out in the pub later tonight.

Very nice, how much did they set you back?

I've made it my mission this year to hit a 180, I've been playing for two years and still haven't hit one despite everyone else doing so :( I've had countless 140's, I've had a 13 dart finish..but that 180 is just ridiculously elusive.

I'm convinced the problem is that I see the first two darts land in the T20 and the nerves get to me - and the worst thing is that they'll go once I've hit the first 180 :(

  7. I'm a couple of chapters through The Dice Man - Luke Rhinehart

    No!!!!!

I gave up after 7 chapters, it's such tedious rubbish and quite easily the worst book I've ever read, and that includes reading some utter rubbish by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Words cannot express my hatred for The Dice Man :/

  8. The Czechs are beating England 2-1 just now, pretty funny stuff.

That free kick was absolutely brilliant, James was absolutely nowhere. And then he smiled, the useless donkey that he is.

Funniest thing was saying to one of my friends "watch this, England will pull back a jammy goal" about five seconds before they scored...she'd claimed they wouldn't (despite being English!) and yet...they did.

What the hell are they paying Capello for, though?

  9. What is a troll?

From a personal point of view, the only real troll that I've ever encountered was someone who frequented the official Manics forum, who would do some really horrible, spiteful things towards people. But at the same time, he'd make very close friends with some people and use them to get more information that he could use to his own advantage - a truly nasty, evil piece of work. He eventually got banned, but he's still around to this day on his own little forum, preaching to his little band of followers - so I assume he can be called a bona fide troll.

But how can you define trolling? Is it as clear cut as saying that anyone that stirs up trouble is a troll, or is it more complex than this - when does trolling start and opinions end? I've even seen forums where having an opinion different to the majority was instantly classed as trolling by the moderation team and the user warned/banned.

Where is the line? My personal line is when people start being abusive towards other members of the community, be it to individuals or to a the community as a whole - you cannot simply say that someone is a troll because their opinions provoke strong reactions.

And of course, you have to consider people's responses - is it acceptable for someone to abuse a perceived troll in their eyes? The jury is out - if they're a troll, then they certainly deserve it, but if they're not, then they don't. And then the argument swings back to 'what is a troll?'. Swings and roundabouts, really.

To take the question on here - is it possible to troll using other means than mere comments alone? For instance, could it be considered trolling if someone took up all the high scores in the Arcade and clearly prevented anyone from themselves from obtaining any high scores? Or of course, the reputation system - would it be trolling if they went round handing out positive reputation to every user in sight, without rhyme or reason?

Even this message could be defined as trolling.

    Opinions?

  10. would not playing the "scene" venues not shuv u into the east neuk, moorings and malt mill though? to be honest id rather be part of the "scene" and play a decent venue thanks!

Way to cut your nose off to spite your face, seeing as people that use the Malt Mill and East Neuk will tend to use the other venues too.

As for The Moorings...ever actually been inside?

  11. Presumably you know better then?

I don't think anyone does know better, this is the thing. The BBC reported that Georgia invaded after low level tit for tat attacks between the Ossetians and Georgians - so it may be that Saakashvili thought he'd be able to use the Olympics as pretext to get away with an invasion, particularly at a time when national pride would be running high.

People are asking questions about Saakashvili's mental health though - did he seriously expect Russia to stand back and do nothing?

I think the only thing that's certain is that he's lost South Ossetia to Russia now.

  12. Alas, the lovely Kelly Sotherton dropped the ball big time in her earlier events and even grabbing second in her final even wasn't enough to get her a bronze. Poor lass :(

I was really hoping she'd win gold, she really seems like she'd deserve it. All credit to her for saying that she'll be in London though and not giving up :) Her Javelin wasn't too bad either compared to the old Sotherton's woeful attempts, but she just didn't pull it off in the long jump or high jump :(

On a related note, what the hell is going on with the judging at these games? I just watched China win another gold in the gymnastics, and the Chinese winner was clearly nowhere near as good as the American - but they got the same score, with the Chinese one winning on a tie break? It's clearly obvious that something is amiss - even to the point where all other countries were hugging each other and being friendly, yet there was a very clear dislike between them and the Chinese.
