Original Band

An original band is where a group of similarly distalented individuals collate to produce material surprising and unexpected from the viewpoint of each member individually. It is the antithesis of the covers band format that alcohol purveyors prefer as it demands a level of consciousness seldom achieved by the weekend binge drinker.

One would think that a town so geographically, economically and intellectually marooned as this one would be unresponsive to just such an endeavour. One would be correct. Against common sense however this town has a well of talent in this regard if only it could be harnessed and given air between the relentless grind of offshore work/golf/my mates just got a good engineer position/Westhill/2 cars in the driveway/Tesco/that's the way the world is/I don't know to be quite honest - attitude.

It's been the same in Aberdeen since the 60s, believe me, I've been around long enough to verify it and it's nothing new. Aberdeen punters like the same old shite they can hear on the radio. I have found the same problem with trying to put together a blues band over the years, everyone seems to think blues bands are about 10 minute guitar/and/or/harp solos or doing things the way so-and-so plays them. What's wrong with a bit of originality?

There, rant over, thank you. You've been a great audience. lol.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of originality. Aberdeen has had and still does have plenty good original bands. One of my favourites from a "few" years back was 'One God Universe' Cracking band with great songs too but unfortunately never got the breaks I feel they deserved. The same can be said for bands up and down the country tho! Very few get the recognition due.

Im also a fan of current bands like GutterGodz, HellHouse and Semperfi. Time will tell if these guys get the breaks!!

Some punters do indeed like the same old same old when watching a live band (and not just in Aberdeen I might add), and thats where cover bands come in. However, I also feel there can be an element of "originality' when covering someone else's songs too. I played in a few original bands from my teens to my mid twenties and as happens with many never reached a level I'd have liked. Boooo!! haha! Now, in my thirties and I do play covers but always try and put my own mark on them. I also still make my own original music in the confines of my own "studio".

I do find it amusing with the amount if stick folks get for being in cover bands tho! I dont know why musicians playing original stuff have such a dislike towards cover bands? Some sort of superiority complex? I dunno. Its not gonna stop me having a good time tho!

You will find that almost all of the really original bands and musical innovators have one thing in common: they started out as cover bands.

They started by respecting their audience and their tastes and not put them all down as binge drinkers listening to the same old shite.
