It’s all about taking the experiences from all the years before and watching and learning from the changing music market and that’s what I’m doing: reinvention.” Of course, Timo Maas is no stranger to reinvention. In a DJ career that he estimates has now spanned “a good 27 years”, Timo’s musical palette has taken in epic breaks for Perfecto (‘Ubik’), the globe-straddling, still-ubiquitous remix for Azzido Da Bass known to the world as ‘Dooms Night’ and a solo artist album for Warner which saw him work with r n b princess Kelis (on ‘Help Me’) and Placebo frontman Brian Molko. But he’s fairly sanguine about the past and he certainly isn’t a man who dwells on it. Last summer, Timo returned to his most natural home – techno – with the masterstroke called ‘Subtellite’ for Cocoon. 12. It gives us enormous pleasure to announce that the special guest for our 7th Birthday @ The Reading Rooms, Dundee on Friday 6th May is none other than Ovum head honcho and Philadelphia legend JOSH WINK! This is an incredibly rare chance to catch an act of this stature in such an intimate space as the 350 capacity Reading Rooms! Josh will not be playing anywhere else in Scotland this weekend so we urge everyone to make the trip to Dundee, you won't be disappointed! HEADWAY 7TH BIRTHDAY Friday 6th May 2011 featuring... JOSH WINK EXTENDED 3 HOUR SET (Ovum / Philadelphia , USA) + Andy Barton Neil Clark Graeme Binnie Bruce Anderson The Reading Rooms Blackscroft Dundee Doors: 10.30pm - 2.30am Tickets: 15 from Grouchos, Resident Advisor and Ticketweb Josh Wink Headway Dundee | Facebook The Reading Rooms | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos "Some people get pigeonholed as being into just one thing, Wink remarks, I hate that. When there are rules, it doesn't become art, and it's not fun. I've learned that you can't please everybody, so I'd rather be concerned with making good art, and the people that like this art will stick with you." Philadelphia born and based Josh Wink is one of the true pioneers of techno, house and allied styles - blurring the definitions. At 13, a young Josh Wink began his first job as an apprentice at Captain Jacks mobile DJ Company, three years later, he had started to DJ at local house parties. By 1988 the year that rave exploded into public conscious - Wink was already a main player on the underground music scene. Then I began to realize that I had ideas of songs. Instead of DJing other peoples music, I wanted to translate these ideas into my own music that was in my head. House music and new wave electronic music really influenced me when I was a teenager. Plus, going to see Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money DJ in Philly made me want to get more into the 'art' of DJing. In 1990, just out of his teens, Wink released his first EP Tribal Confusion on the infamous Strictly Rhythm imprint, under the moniker E-Culture (with King Britt), also releasing other EPs under various different guises. In 1994 he formed his own imprint Ovum Recordings and released Liquid Summer a track which helped propel him onto the international circuit. Id say that Wink 'Liquid Summer' (Ovum), Wink Meditation Will Manifest' (R & S Records), Winx How's The Music (Sorted) and Nervous Build Up (Nervous) were some tracks that got me to start traveling around the world in the early 90's. In 1995, Josh Wink became one of the first DJ/producers to translate his music from the underground to above and to international success. He consecutively unleashed a string of classics including Don't Laugh (recorded as Winx on Nervous Records) and Higher State of Consciousness tracks that topped charts worldwide and that are still recognized and played today. He also remixed Moby and Firefly in the same year. In 1996, whilst gaining recognition from leading press including Rolling Stone magazine, Josh Wink released his debut album Left Above The Clouds (under the name Winx) on Nervous Records. In 1998, he released his second LP HearHere on his own Ovum imprint. With HereHear Wink pushed boundaries even further, inviting fellow artists as diverse as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Caroline Crawley (Shelleyann Orphan / This Mortal Coil), and Philly poet Ursula Rucker (Jazzanova / The Roots) to contribute to a far-reaching disc that ran the gamut of electronic music styles - from ambient and trip-hop to drum & bass, as well as the trademark mix of house and techno on which Wink has built his international reputation. I wanted to continue to push my envelope of making diverse electronic music and not have pressure to only make dance music. In 1999, as well as remixing Steve Bugs Loverboy on Poker Flat, Josh Wink began his highly respected Profound Sounds Ovum compilation series with Profound Sounds Vol.1. In 2000, he sampled Chicago legend Lil Louiss French Kiss to create Hows Your Evening So Far, released on FFRR records, he also remixed The Utah Saints and Mood II Swing. In 2001 Josh Wink released Evil Acid on Ovum and also teamed up with Carl Cox to release Wink Vs Carl Cox Its The Machines on Coxs Intec imprint, as well as delivering highly coveted remix workings of Depeche Mode, Dave Clarke and Slam. Into 2002 and Josh Wink delivered Superfreak a release that again caught the ears of many and inspired many in the process. He also remixed Paul Oakenfolds Starry Eyed Surprise, FC Kahuna, Sebastien Leger and Range Of Motion for his own Ovum imprint. In 2003 Josh Wink delivered his third artist album 20 To 20 on Ovum moreover a collection of his own work that he would class as his secret weapons on the dancefloor; heavily 303 inspired releases that delved into Winks Acidic House roots. He also delivered his masterful Profound Sounds Vol.2 mix CD and remixed artists including Sting, Masters At Work, Ladytron, Harry Romero and Icelandic band GusGus. In 2004 Josh Wink once again set dancefloors in motion with EPs 516 Acid and Oakish EPs which garnered support both from both the old-school and the new DJs and styles filtering into the scene. He also remixed DJ Minx for Richie Hawtins M-nus imprint, Australian band Infusion, Steffan Goldmanns Shimmer EP on Ovum and Alexkids Dont Hide It for FCommunications. In 2005, Josh Wink remixed artists including DJ Sneak and Alter Ego and, in 2006, he released Have To Get Back (no vox version) on M-nus, under the moniker Dinky Dog, as part of M-nuss 'MinimizeToMaximize' / various artist compilation. He also released the third in the Profound Sounds series Profound Sounds Vol.3 (coming out in the UK on Ministry of Sound entitled Sessions) which exclusively included the remix he crafted for Radioheads Everything In Its Right Place. His Have To Get Back release came out as a double A-side on M-nus, backed with Loco Dices Seeing Through Shadows. In 2007, Josh Wink released his EP Thick As Thieves on Steve Bugs Poker Flat imprint an exchange for a release Bug had given to Ovum Houze/Summer Nights (released in 2004) - he also released Swirl/Have To Get Back (Vox version) on Ovum and remixed Chicken Lips, Taho (for Ovum), Someone Else and Radio Slaves Screaming Hands for Rekids. In 2008 Wink once again switched styles, altered rules and initiated a change. With his influential EP Stay Out All Night (a massive Miami track and an Essential New Tune for Pete Tong on Radio 1), Wink went against the current musical grain and paired NYC 90's house with Chicago jackin beats and a bit of St. Germain. Wink also spent the first half of 2008 preparing his fourth artist album When a Banana Was Just a Banana. 2009 saw the release of Winks fourth opus When A Banana Was Just A Banana and a flurry of activity ensued. After the release of the album, Wink featured on the cover of nine music magazines worldwide including DJ Mag in the UK, Raveline in Germany and more. He also achieved album of the month in Mixmag, made a special Essential Mix for Radio 1 and toured the globe. Into 2010 and Wink decided to release a remix package of the album entitled When A Banana Was Just A Banana Remixed and Peeled here Wink invited his esteemed peers to remix a track of their choice remixers included Radio Slave, Chateau Flight, Jimpster, Nic Fanciulli and more. Wink also celebrated 15 Years of Ovum with a World Tour Taking Ovum and its artists on the road, including the Sonar festival and many more. Josh Winks Ovum imprint, since its beginnings in 1994, has seen releases from Loco Dice, Shlomi Aber, Marc Romboy, DJ Pierre, Aaron Carl, King Britt, Steve Bug, DJulz and of course his own productions. It still continues to grow by both introducing new talents and releasing one-offs from some of the worlds best known producers. Ovum is about integrity to good music! We feel that we dont have to follow the music that is trendy or fad-like at the moment. As a DJ, since his 1988 rave beginnings, Josh Wink extensively traveled the globe since 1995 playing every festival that counts, through to the smallest and underground venues around the globe. The Best DJ experience is being able to create an audio atmosphere where an audience can absorb from me, while I get absorbed from them. His only residency in the world is held in his hometown of Philadelphia at Fluid. Taking trends, making trends and breaking trends, Josh Winks music (under its many monikers including Wink, Winc, Winks, Winx, The Crusher, E-Culture, and Size 9, Accent, Dinky Dog, J Dawg and The Crusher) has always experimented and influenced. The sound of Josh Wink today remains one of a man unafraid to walk the border between stylistic boundaries.
  13. We are a little bit overjoyed to announce that next up on the Headway turntables will be very special guest and one half of Leftfield, PAUL DALEY! HEADWAY Friday 5th November 2010 featuring... PAUL DALEY (Leftfield) + Andy Barton Neil Clark Bruce Anderson Graeme Binnie The Reading Rooms Blackscroft Dundee Doors: 10.30pm - 2.30am ** LIMITED EARLY BIRD TICKETS ON SALE NOW FROM GROUCHOS FOR ONLY 8! ** Advance tickets 10 Headway - The Official Website Headway Dundee | Facebook Headway on Myspace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads The Reading Rooms on Myspace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Leftfield - 2010 UK Tour Paul has been on Dance musics frontline since the release of Leftfields debut single Not Forgotten in 1989. With partner Neil Barnes, the duo went onto become one of the most globally successful and respected acts in Dance music, along the way shaping styles and creating sounds that have influenced heavily and been borrowed from literally. As a DJ, remixer and producer in his own right, Paul employs the same approach to being different, fresh and exciting as he has throughout his vocation and the success he has enjoyed has come through an absolute understanding of the music, the clubs and the people. As dance acts go they dont come any bigger and few have had such an enormous impact on the international scene. By not repeating themselves, Leftfield delivered two key albums - for which they received Brit & Mercury nominations for Best UK Dance Acts in both 1996 & 2000 - that helped shift Dance musics sound into new and dynamic phases and as such the reputation and the respect that the name Leftfield still commands to this day, is literally second to none Since Leftfield parted ways in 2001, Paul has been in demand as a DJ, remixer and producer in his own right, turning out killer dancefloor ammunition for, among others, Slam (Alien Radio), Dub Pistols (Six Million Ways) and Bolz Bolz (Take A Walk - which went on to be synched to a Smirnoff commercial), plus the sunset-tinted Adios Ayer for long-time friend Jose Padilla (Caf Del Mar) and a rework of Massive Attacks Butterfly Caught. In 2004 he produced a single for the curious alliance of funk renegade Afrika Bambaata and robo-synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan, who teamed up on a new version of Numans 1979 track Metal, resulting in an electro floor-curler with a commanding presence. Paul has been operating in the shadows for the last ten years, DJ'ing and remixing whilst putting the finishing touches to his solo album, due out in 2010. He is just as comfortable playing cutting edge electronics to 200 kids in a sweaty warehouse as he DJ'ing to large festival crowds. When Paul DJs, its still predominantly a diverse mixture of electronically infused Techno, House and beyond. The linear connection being the all important funk and sonic subversive element. But appreciating so many different types of music, has always made it hard to pinpoint Paul Daley as a particular style DJ (or producer, or remixer) and is key to his ability at keeping a dancefloor on the edge. Paul understands and encourages new music from underground labels from all over the world, anyone who comes to listen to a set should not expect to hear some kind of 90s revival (he didn't hold down a 3 year residency at Fabric for nothing...), his sets and records represent an energy of someone half his age with twice as much musical experience. Anyone fortunate enough to catch his summer residency at Ibizas uber cool country club The Underground over the last 5 years bears witness to this. Those who have heard Paul play understand his love and sincerity to the music. This has always outweighed taking an obvious commercial route as a DJ and this attitude continues to this day.
  14. We are very pleased to announce the return of Headway stalwarts SILICONE SOUL. The best Headway of 2009 without question was when they played last year in October and blew the roof off the place, we're very much looking forward to a night of similar quality! Check out these videos from last year: and from our 3rd birthday in 2007: Also check out the full set recorded live on Friday 2nd October 2009 @ The Reading Rooms, Dundee... awesome! http://www.club-headway.co.uk/Silicone_Soul_Headway_02-10-09.mp3 HEADWAY Friday 3rd September 2010 featuring... SILICONE SOUL (Soma, Darkroom Dubs) + Andy Barton Neil Clark Bruce Anderson Graeme Binnie The Reading Rooms Blackscroft Dundee Doors: 10.30pm - 2.30am Entry: 8 before 11pm, 10 after silicone soul on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Headway - The Official Website Headway Dundee | Facebook Headway on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads The Reading Rooms on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Since first appearing on Slams mighty Soma Records in 1998, DJ-production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie, aka Silicone Soul, have occupied a special place in the over-crowded field of electronic dance music, mainly through the depth and quality of their recordings plus innate understanding of musics grand heritage and its constant development. Silicone Soul is the perfect name to describe the way they cajole then sculpt every sonic ingredient from their machines with maximum care and emotion. Theyve always turned their heads away from vacuous trends to follow their passion and instincts, famously turning down Top Of The Pops for their 2001 top ten hit Right On but happy in the knowledge that every single they release kicks off in the underground clubs; esoteric, melodically-textured and underpinned by a compulsive, euphoric throb harking back to the earliest days of disco. Over the course of four albums, the pair have turned the often tricky task of making a substantial electronic dance album into an art form, partly by remembering what made classic albums happen and last in the first place. Craig and Graeme met at school but didnt just rise from the rave, instead cutting their musical teeth on original punk ructions by the Stooges and MC5, while recognising the groundbreaking innovations of the Rolling Stones and soul pioneers such as Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield (whose Right On For The Darkness provided a blueprint for their Right On 4 Tha Darkness). In the late 80s-early 90s the duo became justifiably addicted to the interstellar, drugged-out soul of Primal Screams Screamadelica and its attendant Andrew Weatherall remixes. When they heard Slams Orde and Stuart venting such at the first night of their Soma club at Glasgows Arches, the potential and euphoria of electronic dance music drenched their musical ambitions, leading to them setting up their own independent record label called Depth Perception in late 1996 (which included an early song called Silicone Soul). These releases caught the ears of Soma supreme Dave Clarke and Slam, who had started Soma at the start of the decade and, even then were counted among the top UK dance labels with a formidable roster. An underlying punk ethic has always been at the heart of Slam and Soma, which was enough to convince Craig and Graeme that this was the right label for them. Silicone Souls first Soma releases were The Strip followed by All Nite Long (their love of the Stones emerging in the title of third track, Midnite Rambler) in 1998, followed by Right On 4 Tha Darkness in 1999 with further 12-inches including Nosferatu, The Answer, Seven Day Weekend, Inferno, The Poisoners Diary, Under A Werewolf Moon, Damascene Moments, The Pact, The Snake Charmer,Bad Machines and The Pulse. Silicone Soul have released four critically acclaimed albums (All on Soma) A Soul Thing [2000], Staring into Space [2005], Save Our Souls [2006] and last years Silicone Soul. Early on, each release became an event; guaranteed carnage at sweaty clubs and while the albums made headily compulsive home listening as panoramic visions in their own right. Their tracks could be deep and exotic or roof raising in wild pitch style, while the sense of infinite space betrayed their fixation with Temptations producer Norman Whitfield. In keeping with Somas in-house mix swapping, Craig and Graeme have remixed several names on the roster, including Slam and starting their Darkroom Dubs imprint in 2003 to venture deeper underground with a roster including Mirror Music, Sei A and Extrawelt. Silicone Soul have also adapted themselves to live gigs as they tour extensively; in the last year theyve left indelible footprints anywhere from Murmansk to Melbourne, while holding residences at Barcelonas La Terrrazza, Antwerps Caf DAnvers and Pressure, Slams current club at The Arches where it all began. They have also become firm favourites on the festival circuit. Last year Silicone Soul received two nominations in DJ Mags Best Of British awards (Best Album, Best Producer). Their accompanying praise cited, a name that encapsulates the marriage of the synthetic and the sincere at the heart of their musicnot only one of Scotlands most exciting and challenging dance acts, but Britain and beyond. 2010 has already seen remix EPs from their last Soma album and label compilation Darkroom Dubs Volume II Mixed By Silicone Soul, a second collection of exclusive, unreleased and favourite tracks from their label, which stands tall as one of the years best musical journeys. Recent releases include Silicone Soul Remixed for Soma, featuring Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Prompt, Nhar & Klartraum and Time Mariners Mirrour, for Darkroom Dubs. Theres an emotional depth and subtle cinematic mischief running through Silicone Souls music of a sort rarely glimpsed in electronic dance music. Theyve never copied the afore-mentioned musical heroes, but that same indefinable spirit which drove them seems to have taken root in their creative juice dispenser, alive and knocking on house heavens door.
