I'm in the early stages of putting together a very my bloody valentine style band. I've got a drummer bagged and I play guitar but anyone else would be welcome. would ideally like a female vocalist but that's not too important. There's a fair bit of material written but none of it recorded yet Bassists, other guitarists, singers and synth/key players would be good

I'd be aiming to build a retro looking strat with 57/62 single coil pickups an aged maple neck with medium jumbo frets. Locking tuning machines and a decent tremelo. I've still nae made my mind up completely so that list is subject to change. I might not even make a strat! I'm quite liking a Jag at the moment but I just feel for my first build I should go for a more common guitar, purely for finding out stuff in case I get stuck. The whole special and unique aspect is really appealing to me as well.

It used to be on bravo on sky. No idea if its still on there though. It was ran a few months behind the UFC so you got to see the fichts for free! This may not be the case now because the only time i watch tv these days is the simpsons at supper time and World of Sport wrestling on a sunday morning.

So Spotify Swapsie Sunday arrived and in my inbox arrived songs of the sea by daveofficer. I had a quick look over it and was pleasantly suprised to see a few familar names and songs. I had an hour or so to fill in till supper time so I sat down and put it on. First up was The Old Horizon- Master by Magnolia Electric Co. It's a haunting piece of music that had my attention from start to finish. Mainly piano and vocals with some noise in the background, the song perfectly accompained lazing about on a sunday, plus it has some kinky cover art Next up was one I was quite excited about after my wee look over the track listing. the song was John Taylor's Month Away by King Creosote & Jon Hopkins. I've heard good things about this and I was not dissappointed. Quite simply it's an amazing tune with great lyrics and beautiful instrumentation. The outro really enforced the sea theme. Absolutely cracking choice! After an intro that sounded a wee bit like a number from a musical, Song for the sea by Hannah Peel went on to suprise me a wee bit. It's not the kind of thing I'd go out of my way to listen to normally but it's really catchy and a sweet little pop song. So number 4 for me was where this playlist began to fully plunge into the sea theme Patrick Spence by Kris Denver is awash with mentions of boats, booze and wenches. (I'll stop with the cheesey metaphors I promise.) The lad's got some voice and I really liked it. Next up was Adieu, England by Trembling Bells. I quite liked the music and the guitar sounded awesome but to be honest im not sure about the singing.Sometimes it sounds like the guy is jamacian or something. I'm planning on giving this one a few more listens to make my mind up for sure. Dirty Three get things moving again with pretty female vocals and some nice build ups and swells. The Corries show up next with the Bonnie ship the Diamond. Classic folk from the Scottish legends! The Corries will always be welcome in my ears. The Waterboys follow with Fisherman Blues. More folk goodness but this time with a slighty more rocky feel. At points in the song I felt like I've heard it before. Not my favourite on the list but still pretty good! Sea by Low is a cracker. Good lyrics and nice music. Its only downfall is it's a bitty short. Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea reminds me of playing Bioshock for the first time. It's good old big band music and I love it. Next up is Mono- Burial at sea. I'm a big Mono fan and this is one of my favourites. Epic build ups and a huge sound.It almost sounds like music from a western at the start. Things pick up at the 8 minute mark and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Great Stuff. Last, and by no means least, is The Beginning and the End by ISIS. I'm a massive ISIS fan so I'm a wee bit biased here. 2 Words. Fucking Awesome! Lots of riffs and epic builds and a cracking conclusion to a mighty fine mix tape. Starting off quietly and working towards a loud finale. The theme was well realised and all of the songs made me think of the sea and fishermen. Great Work by daveofficer, if we do this again my next partners got big shoes to fill!

either a strat or a tele. i would quite like a jag but im planning on keeping it simple for the first time

did you use a guitar kit or did you source all the parts seperate?

I agree with this, but there is a fine line between the right weight and far too heavy. I once played a Les Paul that would double up as an anchor. It put me off LP's for quite a long time.

hmm i never really thought about the wood that much to be honest. I just got excited when I seen it was £95. Basswood is pretty minging though. Would you reckon it's crapness would matter if I was planning on modifying it a heap?

Yeah i've seen a few kits online. They are quite well priced as well. However,the cheap strat job seems like a good option considering the price you can pick one up a semi decent one for. Cheap Strat. It might be cheaper (and involve less effort) to buy one of those with the intention of modifying it. I've got a Fat Strat which has a humbucker in it the bridge and it sounds very good. Quite good for playing a wide range of different styles as you've still got the neck and middle single coils for that fender twang. I'm a bit of stratophile tbh.

I'm planning on modifying/experimenting quite a bit with my next guitar. I've just discovered that squire make a strat for less than a hundred buck though so I might just pick that up and mod the fuck out of it!

Is it really worthwhile building your own guitar? I've seen a fair amount of reasonable priced parts online but does it work out any cheaper in the long run? i.e delivery fee's, paint, pickups etc.
