  7. Metropolis present Optimo (4 hr Set) Friday 24th of April Origin, Market Street Below Hotel Metro, Aberdeen Doors open at 11pm Optimo started in 1997, though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had each been DJing separately for ten years. Both had started out playing different music - Twitch - electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from who they borrowed their name) and Wilkes reggae, funk and jazz. Then techno came along and Twitch co founded Scotland's first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, became legendary, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin. The club also spawned thee labels which released music from amongst others Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor and Orlando Voorn. In 1997 they founded the clubnight Optimo as a reaction to 4/4 techno all night long. Anything goes was the philosophy and the club night proved to be a hit. "I didn't care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do," says Twitch. "I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing - it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy - that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity." Don't expect easy club hits at a night at Optimo, depending on the duo's mood, the sound will veer from sleazy funk to post punk, electro, 50's swing and anything inbetween. According to their bio, "Serious DJs would come and watch in horror while several times, seasoned trainspotters would come up to Twitch and tell him 'You've lost the plot' or 'You can't play this in the Sub Club - it's sacrielige!' or 'But... you started Pure, how can you do this?'. People would get really angry about it which of course only fuelled the flames!" These days Optimo is taking the sound to the world with dates across Europe, America and Japan. And while Twitch and Wilkes remain the residents, each week Glasgow is treated to Optimo guests, who have included the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Atom Heart, Luciano, Four Tet and Justus Kohncke. Early Arrival Essential......

  18. Axis.minimal.techno.electro.breaks Jhono - Live (Man on Fire) Max DJing since the age of twelve and having been producing since the age fourteen, Jhono has witnessed the coming and going of many trends in DJing. Sick of the analog vs. Digital, vinyl vs. CD, Serato vs. Ableton debates, he decided to combine the lot into one unique DJ rig. His style is a combination of techno, breaks and minimal, but with more than a healthy dose of uplifting cinematic moments thrown in. Jhono will be DJing other artists music as well as his own productions but at the same time remixing and producing on the fly. This is all made possible through the eccentric rig he has put together combining, Serato, Ableton, a Urei old school analog mixer, valves, a touchscreen controller (lemur) and infrared D-beam controllers. Expect ripping saw bassline, pounding beats and bleeps and Gladiator-esque vocals. This will definitely be like nothing else youve heard or seen before. My parents wouldnt let me [have one], he says. They wanted me to have a computer as it was more educational. As a result, his first actual contact with 8-bit technology came not through Nintendo but early home computers like the Spectrum and Commodore 64. Whether intended for instruction or play, those initial dealings with technology clearly struck a chord. Morris possesses a seemingly meticulous knowledge of computers. And as Boy 8-Bit, he punishes processors to create a head-spinning brand of electro- and breakbeat-infused future house. Morris, now 27, started DJing and making electronic music around the age of 15, employing a Commodore Amiga 500 and Octamed tracker software (an early sample-based program). He could create only simple tracks with such humble tools, but a few years later hed find inspiration in a new piece of equipment. In 1999, Morris was making tunes on a PC using Cubase softwareand not having much luckuntil a friend gave him a copy of Fruity Loops. I use it to this day for everything, he says. Its awesome. With a newfound confidence to match his new set-up, Morris has been making certifiable bangers and garnering praise for remixes of Black Ghosts (Simians Simon Lord and DJ Touch), dubstep don Burial, and East London rapper Lethal Bizzle. Any Way You Choose to Give It, a reworking of a track by the former, has been the one that really kicked everything off, Morris explains. And though that songs almost a year old now, Morris tells us he still [gets] MySpace messages from people asking where they can get a copy. His productions are chock-full of ideaslots of bass and breakbeats culled from hip-hop, jungle, and big beat, as well as plenty of chopped-up and screwed vocalsedited cleanly into a composed, wholly danceable thump that owes as much to Baltimore and late-90s hip-hop as it does the British rave scene. I like bass, I like melody, and I like dynamics, he offers. Im just throwing things [together] to see what comes out.
