Budgie plus Support Monday 22 November 2004 - Caf Tickets 12 (8 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 8.30 pm Show Starts: 9 pm Formed in Cardiff in 1968,Their self-titled debut was released in 1971 followed by Squawk in 1972. The album that followed ensured their place in rock and roll history, Never turn Your Back on a Friend (1973), spawning the rock anthem "Breadfan" later covered by thrash metal merchants Metallica as the b-side to the "Harvester of Sorrow" single, who also covered "Crash course in brain surgery" on their "Garage Days Revisited" EP. Budgie disbanded in 1983, but reformed in 1999. Remembered by rock fans for their graphic song titles such as 'In The Grip Of The Tyre-Fitters Hands' and 'Hot As A Dockers Armpit', Budgie were a major influence on many of today's top metal bands.

  3. Paddy Casey will be supporting Tom Baxter at his forthcoming Lemon Tree show on Tuesday 16th November. For those of you who have not seen Paddy, you will be in for a pleasant suprise. He is another wonderfully gifted singer songwriter, hugely succesfull in Ireland having sold 130,000 albums, and Tom is really pleased that he has agreed to open for the UK dates. Tom Baxter: plus Paddy Casey Tuesday 16 November 2004 - Caf Tickets 9 (6 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 8pm Show Starts: 8.30pm Tom Baxter fills his songs with real life, sings them like he means them, and arrives in this envelope via the reassuringly old-fashioned medium of word of mouth. This is a man whose music builds from acoustic beginnings to a real emotional intensity, thanks to a unique voice, powerful string-driven production and lasting songcraft. A sold-out residency at Londons Bush Hall last year and support slots with David Gray and Jamie Cullum amongst others built up a huge buzz, leading to a major deal with Sony and his new debut album, Feather And Stone. "The Buckley debt is still evident, but Ed Harcourt and Ben Christophers are the chief competitors and, as both release new albums this autumn, it will be fascinating to compare." Uncut "Tom Baxter has a pretty ordinary name, but this singer has an extraordinary, expressive voice, reminiscent of ol' Jeff himself, but with a firmness and earthiness that stops it flying off into a helium-filled orbit. " Irish Times

The Lemon Tree + Celebrity Talent present: Guru+DJ Doo Wop+support Tuesday 09 November 2004 - Caf Tickets 15 (10 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 9pm Show Starts: 9pm Rapper/composer Guru (real name Keith Elam) first rose to prominence as the "lyrical half" of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, one of the first outfits that attempted to fuse jazz with rap. After three albums by Gang Starr hit record store shelves (1989's No More Mr. Nice Guy, 1991's Step in the Arena, and 1992's Daily Operation), Guru launched his own solo career, issuing Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 in 1993. The album featured guest appearances by the likes of Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, and N'Dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies, and was followed up two years later by a sophomore solo outing, Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality, which again featured a variety of special guests (including Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, and members of Jamiroquai). Despite his solo career, Guru has remained true to Gang Starr all along, continuing to contribute to such further albums as 1994's Hard to Earn and 1998's Moment of Truth. Five years after his second solo outing appeared, Streetsoul was issued in 2000, which again featured a stellar cast of supporting characters: Herbie Hancock, Isaac Hayes, the Roots, Erykah Badu, and Macy Gray. Wasting little time, Guru returned directly back to the recording studio, issuing a follow-up one year later, Baldhead Slick da Click. In addition to the aforementioned artists, Guru has collaborated with some of rap music's best-known producers, including fellow Gang Starr member DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Ayatollah, and DJ Spinna, as well as Ice-T, Naughty by Nature's Treach, Killah Priest, and Ed O.G. 14. Mory Kante Friday 22 October 2004 - Caf Tickets 15 (10 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 9pm Show Starts: 10pm Mory Kante, the "Electric Griot" and the first African star to sell 1 million records, has recieved a great review from the Telegraph: Mory Kante is one of Africa's great mavericks. Having inveigled his way into Mali's legendary Rail Band, the singer went on have a million-selling European hit with Yeke Yeke, a hard-driving dance-mix of a traditional love song. While 17 years of trying to repeat that fluke success have left him a rather marginal figure, this sprightly acoustic album attempts to re-establish him as one of West Africa's key performers, alongside Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour and Baaba Maal. With Kante himself playing guitar, bass, percussion and traditional instruments alongside various soloists, the album has a full, rich sound. Kante's voice is appealingly authoritative in the nasal griot (praise-singing) style. Breathy flute adds a distinctive touch, and the drive and joie de vivre of the playing lifts this head and shoulders above most of the dozens of other acoustic griot albums released over the past decade. Still, Kante's is a restless talent, and you can't help feeling that given the chance he would have a house beat under there in no time. MH Mory will appearing in the up-coming series of Jools Holland's Later. To hear samples of his new album 'Sabou' click here Details
  15. Thursday 28 October 2004 - Caf Tickets 7.50 (5 concessions & regulars) James Yorkston and the Athletes: plus Adem Doors Open: 9pm Show Starts: 9.30pm James Yorkston: Fife alt.folk troubadour James Yorkston hits the road in support of his new Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) produced album Just Beyond The River. It's the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his debut record, Moving Up Country, which was rapturously received on its release two years ago. James is a former member of the band Huckleberry and an associate of the Fence Collective, whose bucolic, acoustic sound is very much in tune with his own. To read a review of James Yorkston's latest album "Just Beyond The River" click here: www.bbc.co.uk/music/folkcountry/reviews/james_yorkston_justbeyond.shtml Adem: Fronting his own four-piece acoustic band, Fridge's bassist has stepped out into the light with a wealth of beautiful songs, perfectly arranged for acoustic guitars, autoharp, harmonium, percussion and double-bass. Adem's honest vocal delivery and hymn-like song structures present his tightly wrought musical vision with great style. Adem's debut single 'Everything You Need/Statued' was released last year on Rough Trade's For-Us 7" label, and since then he and the band have been playing successful shows around the UK, most recently headlining at the ICA. Masamune + Souvaris + Uter + Ekizel Saturday 16 October 2004 - Caf Tickets 5 (3.25 concessions & regulars) Doors Open: 9pm Show Starts: 9.30pm Masamune , a sprawling, chaotic, capricious four-piece with an off-kilter approach to post-punk. Like a hurricane, even at their most quiet, delicate and melodic, they could pick a Buick up off the road. Imagine varnishing a brand new Buick for the winter. This is what it is like trying to place the sound of Souvaris : layer after layer of thick drone and melody, harmonic dissonances and retching soundscapes penetrating parts of your brain that don't even exist! Uter wouldn't exist without brains. Steve Malkmus' brain, electrified&glass cylinder&formaldehyde - hotwired to the 80's. Watch out for that rat!! Here comes the bride. Movie samplin' MC Ekizel and DJ J.Turgenev complete the bill.

Not that they went far. They still live in Glasgow and on Scotland's west coast. Nor did they moulder in inactivity. They kept playing, popping up on stages and in bars and at festivals, in Scotland, London and the Far East. In March, their long-standing cult status in America resulted in a slot at the prestigious South By Southwest music industry festival in Austin, Texas. They are now primed to release their fourth album Weightlifting (scheduled for the 18th of October on Picnic), and this seated gig at The Lemon Tree provides a perfect opportunity to experience their trail-blazing pop in the most intimate of environments.

  24. Couldn't agree more. His erstwhile Radio Skool cohorts Isho and Corallo (The Soulcialists) are well worth checking out too. Giles Walker know his ingins too. The following certainly aint local' date=' but should be on interest to most hip hop enthusiasts: Fingathing Sunday 17th October The Lemon Tree Doors Open 9pm | Onstage 10pm 9 (6 concessions and Regulars) Box Office: 01224 642230 Lifestyle favourites Fingathing return to The Lemon Tree with their unique combination of Peter Parkers turntable wizardry and Sneakys double bass - not forgetting Chris Drurys surreal cartoon visuals. The musical duo first joined forces as part of the live band for the superb Manc hip-hop and soul producers Rae & Christian and have since become a hugely in-demand headline act in their own right through the power and innovation of their live shows. When they lock on to a groove, the effect is awesome. In a world of faceless dance acts, Fingathing's skewed breakbeat experiments provide true spectacle. NME [url']www.fingathing.com DJ Premier Tuesday 9th November Doors Open: 9 pm The Lemon Tree Tickets 15 (10 concessions & Regulars) Box Office: 01224 642230 Chris Martin, aka DJ Premier, best known for being one half of the Rap duo Gang Starr, is also a DJ and record producer. He has produced tracks for such artists as Jay-Z, Big L, The Notorious B.I.G, Nas, M.O.P., Jeru The Damaja, KRS-One and Mos Def. DJ Premier's style of production is considered "underground" Hip-Hop or "alternative" Hip-Hop. He is known for sampling Jazz artists, as well as sampling an artist's past work, when he is creating a new track for that same artist. He is known for combining small vocal portions from multiple artists to make one hook on a track he is producing. This creative technique has made him one of the most sought after producers in Hip-Hop. DJ Premier's name refers to claim to be the first and the best in his style. His original stage name was Wax-Master C, the "C" coming from his real name.
