  1. I saw Suicide at the Electric Ballroom last month and, in terms of traumatic disappointment, it was an experience not unlike Wire coming round to my house; setting fire to the curtains; announcing they are all big fans of Shed 7, then breaking wind in my kitchen.

In short, it was horrible. The ignominy of the house lights being put up while they were still hacking their way through Frankie was almost too much to bear. :(

  2. Interpol have some bloody horrible lyrics and, much as I love them, so do New Order.

A couple of Barney specials on the new album:

I feel your presence everywhere/In the corner, over there.

Where? There on the stair? A little mouse with clogs on?

Real love cant be sold/its another colour than gold.

Not quite up to the standard of Crystal's wonderful: "Here comes love, it's like honey/you can't buy it with money", but never mind.

  3. the council owns more than you think.

it's not expecting the council to wipe our arses for us' date=' they're the fucking planners. it's their job to plan a city's layout and to plan it appropriately. if the council would take a harder stance on licensing and planning applications there wouldn't be so many shit theme pubs in the first place. they are perfectly entitled to lay down conditions for a planning application(i believe the only reason the priory actually went ahead was because it was originally aimed at over 25's) which restrict the type of building in a specific area and no appeal can stop that. i'm sure someone who has an architectural qualification or indeed a planning qualification would be able to confirm or crush that, but i'm fairly confident that's correct.

they're elected for a reason and that's to represent the population in theyr'e wishes and desires and in a responsible manner. they get paid a large amount of money with benefits for doing this so don't let them off the hook.[/quote']

They can zone areas for particular types of use, but that doesn't solve the problem of theme pubs over other licensed premises.

Both the planning Committee and the Licensing Board (which is, technically, a court) have to work within the legislation handed down from above. If they go beyond that, their decision is simply reversed on appeal.

    Frustrating, but there you go.

  4. also heard a club was interested in it. hope that doesn't happen' date=' there's enough shit clubs and pubs round belmont street already. does anyone else think the council have completely arsed belmont street up? it had the potential to be a fucking brilliant alternative street like a mini-camden or byers road but has been overrun by theme bars and clubs. shame they can't turn buildings into more community art spaces or encourage shops like retro rebels to move there.[/quote']

To be fair, the council has got very little to do with it. Legally, they can only stop a business moving in to any location if there is a sound planning or licensing reason for it.

If you do otherwise, the applicant just appeals, theres a planning inquiry and the development goes ahead anyway.

I mean, look at The Priory, the council spent years and most probably a fortune going back and forth to appeal after appeal and inquiry after inquiry trying to stop that.

Yes, it would be great for Belmont Street to be like a mini Byers Road, but if its only theme pubs and identikit bars that are actually applying for planning and licenses, the council is on to plums.

Same goes for encouraging shops to move there. The Council doesnt own the property, so it has absolutely no say in who it gets sold/leased to.

If there IS this great demand for Belmont Street to become some sort of alternative centre, which is an appealing idea ... then we've got to demonstrate that by voting with our feet and with our wallets, rather than expecting the council to wipe our arses for us.

  5. Do you think we should order the box set quickly before they realise they've made a mistake? Surely they've made a mistake!

Hopefully this trend for cheap boxed sets will continue. The Minimal Compact one was only 15 too.

Having said that, the last one I got before that was Johnny Cash, and it was about 94.72, or something. Okay, 60.

  6. I had a look on Ticketmaster and Mute.com but no sign of tickets as yet.

Been to the academy yet? Much better for watching a gig than the Barras - less of a shithole for a start!

I can't get to grips with the Academy. Too many X-Boxes and Playstations littering the place for my liking.

  7. seeing him upset lots of people with self-consciously assymetrical haircuts and ironic trousers by playing status quo and lots of nosebleed gabba was one of my triptych highlights!

i had to keep my distance though. I once drunkenly swore a sacred oath as saying that, if I speak to him, I'll kiss his baldy head and get him to write "John Peel - King of Rock" somewhere on my person ... then it's off to the nearest tattoo parlour

As far as Phillipe Petit's set this time, i am sure he will mix classic female vocals & overlay with Joy Division New Order, Smiths etc with amazing results.

Songs within songs & true improvisation.

well, I was another couple of feet away, so the impact faded a little ...
