and yeah Opaque, how unexpected was that! for those unfamiliar, one of the guys, Lee, now goes under the name of Kylie Minoise, whom im sure you have heard of

aye Opaque were great, loud and so hard to recognise with those face masks - their set @ Drakes (or part of it) is available from Kovorox as part of a 4 CD boxset job. Opaque did play in Tunnels 2 a couple of years back, but I preferred the Drakes gig.

I liked a record that seemed to be Seven Ways to Make You Jack that I heard on an Essential Mix years and years ago. It worked well in the mix but I never tried to find out more. I suppose it would be proto-house or somesuch genre?

'member they found a head on Barrasie Beach in Troon a few years back as well. I was on that beach just not long before they found it. Creepy. Weird place Troon. I was there on a night out visiting friends, I went to the toilets in a night club (the only nightclub), some bloke tried to get off with me, then the next time I went to the toilets I got head butted by some random, then back in the bar I met probably the ugliest, fattest chick I've ever seen, who I then went home with and shagged in her creepy bedroom that was done up like a little kid's bedroom and was fll of teddies and dolls, afterwards she locked me in her house and wouldn't let me leave, I had to make a break for it and I ended up wandering around the streets for two hours cos I had no idea where I was staying. Fun times!

(Edit - actually having looked it up that wasn't a few years ago, it was in 1999)

This is proper old fashioned funk. James is a real showman who combines Fela Kuti's charm, Mark E Smith's jowel and a healthy dose of free jazz. At his most entertaining contorting with his wife he is an excellent dancer. Like Lee Perry he directs his band with a flick of his finger. The Contortions are very cool and purvey their angular brand of soul to the willing audience. Chance may not have film star looks, but he's up there with kings like James Caan and Albert Ayler.

Did anyone else spot the Black Sabbathism's during the set? Or was it just freetibet and myself?

Like Lepeep I went just to see Dub Trio and really enjoyed their set. Very talented band with an interesting take on dubcore, an update of Bad Brains if you will. Amazing bass sound - I wonder if they like dubstep??

More ROIR acts would be welcomed at the Tunnels...

I never stayed for Skindred - enjoyed DT too much and was rather tired,

I paid my 8 quid just to see dub trio, and I was very happy to part with the cash. I don't think they dissapointed at all. so tight, amazing riffs (last two songs especially)...shame mr Patton didn't make an entrance.... he he.

Laughed so much at the first 3 songs of skindred, wished I was 18 again, and went home not wanting to taint the memories of dub trio.

great band, great sound, great LP.

For future reference if I'm doing this again and band have to pull out for whatever reason I will post the changes here. I really can't afford to make up new posters and put them up everywhere a week before the event. In future I'll put a list of acts reflecting any line up changes at the door. Cheers for doing those reviews Dave although you know I was kind of hoping for a two page spread in Wire! Maybe if I can coerce Merzbow into playing next time.

Well I saw the middle three acts and really enjoyed them. I've submitted reviews of two of them to Planet Sound but doubt if they'll publish them as they've just changed format et al but you never know...
