  1. I've recently taken on an extra responsibility in my current job that was basically me being handed a total shitshow. The person initially doing it didn't bother their arse to keep anything updated and said nothing of the fact it was way out of date in the handover meeting. It was initially given to someone else in my department who did an even shoddier job with it before resigning and leaving it with me. It has taken nearly a month to turn it into something resembling a full picture of office use amongst the postgrads in our school, and even then I'm still finding surprise turds as I go.

On the plus side, the postgrads are singing my praises.

  2. As a recruiter - I think LinkedIn is pretty rubbish. It's just a (slightly) more businesslike version of facebook now with "likes" and countless blog posts stating the obvious/filled with meaningless platitudes.

Karma - if you google "industrial areas Aberdeen 2014" you'll find a ton of maps that the council produce with a complete list of every company in every industrial estate in the city. You could do worse than sit with that for a few evenings checking every company's own career pages for roles. Not everyone uses agencies or oilcareers.

That is fantastic. Week/Weekend job hunt sorted.

  3. I have three years of administrative experience, so I'm mostly applying for administrative roles that are a step up from what I'm currently doing which is a Discipline Secretary and Administrator at the Uni. I'm definitely not adverse to moving into another area, although my only other area of work experience is in customer service/retail roles. If it seems interesting (and I'm remotely qualified/meet the essential requirements), pays well (19k pa +) and is based in Aberdeen then I'll apply. I'm not overly choosy about sector.

  4. So, I've chased up a couple of agencies I'm registered with and have applied for a few other jobs this week with properly tailored covering letters, but wondering if there are other jobsites, company websites that regularly update their career areas that I could be looking at? OilCareers is pretty decent and I check indeed every now and again, but there are a lot more temp/contract roles on there as opposed to permanent ones at the moment.

  5. If you're applying for a job where you meet, say, 9 out of 10 of the essential requirements, how do you go about stating the fact that you're quick to learn new systems/programmes/ways of doing whatever (I am, without bragging, very quick to pick these up) and not make it sound like a huge BUT in a covering letter? Is there a way to do this?

  6. Cool, thanks. Does it do anything else extra other than have the backlight?

Paperwhite is touch screen, whereas the standard kindle uses buttons on the tablet itself to 'turn pages'. It also has a faster processor than the standard kindle.

  7. I used to sell kindles as well. If it's being used a lot, and if it's for someone who reads in bed especially, then it's probably worth the extra for the paper white. If it's only being used two-three times a week and not in any situation where you'd need a book light, then you're probably fine with the standard kindle.

  8. So, my girlfriend and I are looking at moving away from Aberdeen next year once she's finished her degree. She's concerned about the logistics of it, things like timing the move with our lease ending and getting new jobs. Obviously, the majority of this is down to us applying for jobs, figuring out commute times, working stuff out with our landlord etc. as well as talking to our vet and figuring out the best way to move a cat without stressing it.

I know quite a lot of people here have relocated in other cities/Poland. What advice would you give?

  9. Started watching OZ last night. Woah. I know i'm gonna love it. Has a similar feeling to Homicide - Life on the streets, which if you haven't seen you should look it out.

Oz is fucking grim, but compelling.

  10. I don't like phoning people. Is there any way I can find out if the recent weather has caused an upset at the Aberdeen North Exchange? My 3G wasn't working earlier, and now my partner is saying the house broadband is no good either.

    Quick Google search yielded nada.
