Sparrow and the Workshop are put simply- an amazing band.

They are clearly making music which harks back to another era, yet it never feels dated, leaving it hard to put a finger on what exactly they sound like. What could have been a pastiche of sounds and influences is not, due to certain individual flourishes. With many musicians claiming to be folk-faced these days to jump on the band wagon of Fleet Foxes and co, its refreshing to hear something more authentic and clearly a product of the heart.

Recently the band completed support tours with both Idlewild + The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Debut album "Crystals Fall" is out now!

The Wave Pictures are an English rock band consisting of David Tattersall (vocals and guitar), Franic Rozycki (bass guitar) and Jonny Helm (drums). The band has its origins in a group called Blind Summit, which David and Franic formed with Hugh Noble in Wymeswold, near Loughborough in Leicestershire, in 1998. The band changed its name to the Wave Pictures and Hugh was eventually permanently replaced by Jonny Helm. They recorded and self-released a string of albums before settling in London.

The Guardian has described their work as "charming, witty pop songs shot through with Jonathan Richman's gawky glee and Suede's doomed provincial romanticism... They owe a certain debt to The Smiths, and Tattersall has Morrissey's knack of marrying the ridiculous and the sublime".

The band is closely linked to artists Darren Hayman (formerly of Hefner), Herman Dune, Daniel Johnston, Jeffrey Lewis and the Mountain Goats, all of whom they have collaborated with live and on record.

  3. Its a new promotions company / alias for events in Aberdeen.

The aim is to be working with selected bands we like only - like Slow Club, The Wave Pictures etc. And to put on semi-regular events with bigger bands we really like (e.g The Sunshine Underground) and occasionally helping to book Scottish tour dates for touring bands.

So far weve done a few events which have been a great success and we have a few more booked for the rest of 09. We will be creating a myspace / facebook etc as a base soon when the time is right / we get a chance.

Back on topic, Slow Clubs album is an absolute winner and should be bought asap!

Tickets will now be available for this in One Up from Friday (being printed as we speak).

Also on sale in One up will be Wave Pictures, Sunshine Underground and James Appollo.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For fans of: Willy Mason, The Walkmen, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Aracde Fire,

If he hadn't rolled up the river when he did, things would have been awfully different. "I'd be playing in a house band in Branson, or selling appliances of my porch.

Fortunately for James, the Apollo clan moved up the river at a young age, leaving the old home of Libertyville, Arkansas behind, and heading for the sweet life of the upper Mississippi.

That early taste of the road stuck, and after striking out school, jobs, and the attention young ladies, James Apollo struck out himself, hitting the road in a kind of eternal tour of the US. "I was living in diners, sleeping in the trunk of my car, and playing a new town every night. I had it made."

James finished up a west coast tour and wound up living on a boat in San Francisco "when the land ran out." He describes it fairly dark times. "I had no one. I thought that's what i wanted. I'd write these songs about beauty and sadness and love and loss, but what did i know? I was captain of a sinking ship.

After a night of drunken dares, Apollo moved to New York City. Inspired by the city's concrete canyons and his own Western longing, he released GOOD GRIEF (2006), an album the London Times called "Americana in the truest sense."

Apollo spent another year on the road, but his luck ran out when he got back to New York. In the summer heat, home for a few precious days between tours, he was returning home from a late-night rehearsal on an old motorcycle when a van ran a red light and flung Apollo 20 feet through the air. "I was in a cast from the waist down," he recalls. "I woke up in a haze of pain, fear and opiates."

He describes the event as the best thing that's ever happened to me, and explains, New York City was tearing my heart out. Before the accident, I was a cruel, unhappy bastard, and my loved ones were getting mighty few. I needed a way out." It took 6 months before Apollo could walk again. But as he recalls, I looked mighty good with a cane.

From that dark experience, the bittersweet sounds of "HIDE YOUR HEART IN A HIVE" were born. The album caught the ear of the BBC, who invited Apollo to perform the first single, "I've Got It Easy," on-air. HIVE also captured the attention of the mainstream press in the US and UK, marking a line between Apollo's time playing half empty rooms, to the current days of enthused crowds.

Despite a savage touring schedule, Apollo found time to lock himself into a Brooklyn recording studio last winter to record his latest EP, ANGELS WE HAVE GROWN APART. The bowery bum orchestra features many of Apollo's New York coconspirators. It's these haunting tunes James Apollo will be playing when the born rambler and his hobo troupe tour the US, UK, and other parts of Europe throughout the year.

    SLOW CLUB

Slow Club is the name of a two-piece folk-pop band from Sheffield, England. The band formed in 2006, after the break-up of Sheffield band The Lonely Hearts.

The band is made up of Charles Watson (vocals, guitar) and Rebecca Taylor (vocals, guitar, percussion). The band released two 7" singles in 2007, Slow Club and Me and You, both on Moshi Moshi records. On 1 September 2008 Slow Club released their first EP entitled Let's Fall Back in Love, also on Moshi Moshi Records.

Their debut album, which was recorded by Mike Timm at Axis Studio in Sheffield, titled "Yeah So" was released on 6 July 2009 on Moshi Moshi Records.

The Sunshine Underground are an English, Leeds based indie rock band. The Sunshine Underground play a variety of punk, funk and indie, featured on their debut album, Raise the Alarm, released by City Rockers on August 28/2006. The group is named after a song from the 1999 album Surrender by The Chemical Brothers. The band are originally from Shrewsbury and Telford, and formed while studying at New College, Telford. After New College the band moved to Woodhouse in Leeds where the band started to develop its sound.

They sold out venues in London and Leeds on their first headline tour. Following their successful support slots for LCD Soundsystem, the group earned the Live Band of the Year trophy at the Leeds Music Awards.

Work on their debut album, Raise the Alarm, was completed in May 2006 and was released on August 28, 2006. They appeared on the 2006 spring/summer European festival circuit.

November saw the band play even more gigs, at increasingly large venues throughout the UK, including cities like Glasgow, Preston, Barnsley and London with the addition of other concerts in May 2007. Most notably they played the Other Stage at the Glastonbury Festival in June and played a headline set on the future stage at T in the Park in July and performed at the Leeds/Reading Festival in August 2007, playing on the NME stage. The band headlined the Strathclyde University's 2007 freshers week.

During their tour supporting Happy Mondays, the band played a number of live versions of new songs which are expected to appear on their second album - slated for a 2009 release. These include titles such as 'Fall in Line' (which has now appeared as a recorded demo on YouTube), 'Your Friends', 'What Are You Waiting For' and 'Coming Home'.

In November 2008, after several months of non-activity, the band posted several new demos on their MySpace page titled 'Malibu', 'Epic', 'Darktime', 'Animals' and 'An Introduction'. It was stated by the band that none of these songs would make their second album.

They recorded a song with FC Kahuna named "From the City to the Sea" which was made public and free for download in February 2009. It was released as a free download because it differed too much from the other songs to make it on the album. The song takes a sample from the Aphex Twin track Windowlicker.

On 16 April 2009, the band put up low-resolution versions of five tracks from their new album on their MySpace account; "Coming to Save You", "In Your Arms", "Spell It Out", "Your Friends" and "Any Minute Now". Their new album is to be released by the end of 2009.
