  1. Last post still has Drummonds as the venue, so I'll make a new thread (the old one is three pages back now).

JIM LOCKEY AND THE SOLEMN SUN

A country folk punk band from Cheltenham town made up for four lost souls with a passion for politically poetic storytelling. Whilst beginning its life as a solo project for Jim at the close of 2006, the subsequent years have seen him develop strongly as a songwriter and performer, leading him to recruit a cavalcade of the towns best musical talent (including fellow istf label mate Joe and ex-holloh bandmate Phil) to equal the forthright natures of his influences (Bright Eyes, Billy Bragg, Johnny Cash).

DAVE HUGHES (from The Renegade Folk Punk Band)

"Exactly as their name suggests, this is folk meets punk. Think Against Me! if they got in a fight with The Gaslight Anthem at a folk festival. Full of heart, energy and passion this five-piece are bound to blow you away with their electric live show"

  2. Nice one. I might try and come along to this - saw Jim supporting Frank Turner and thought him and the band had some decent tunes.

Aye, they do. They are one of my favourite bands in the UK at the moment. Played a number of gigs with them in the past, so dead excited about doing this scottish 'tour' with them.

You can hear their last album 'Atlases' on Spotify. It's dead good.

Some of you may have seen Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun supporting Frank Turner at the Lemon Tree in February.

JL&tSS are a country folk punk band from Cheltenham town made up for four lost souls with a passion for politically poetic storytelling. Whilst beginning its life as a solo project for Jim at the close of 2006, the subsequent years have seen him develop strongly as a songwriter and performer, leading him to recruit a cavalcade of the towns best musical talent (including fellow istf label mate Joe and ex-holloh bandmate Phil) to equal the forthright natures of his influences (Bright Eyes, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner).

Following the success of his 2008 debut record "I'll Be Neon", Jim Lockey has gone from strength to strength achieving profile slots at prestigious festivals and venues and being personally invited to share stages with those musicians who have and still do influence his sound to date. Since the rise of the Solemn Sun the band have played alongside cult members of the new folk movement including Frank Turner, Johnny Flynn, Mumford & Sons, Chris T-T and Peter Doherty and have just put the finishing touches to this year's follow up record entitled 'Atlases', an LP which sets the world to rights, through screaming lungs and alt.country rhythms, and stands as a testiment to the toils of a young British generation. Recorded over two days at Steve Winwood's Wincraft studios and produced by MPG engineer of the year and double Grammy award nominated producer James Towler, the album is expected to be released spring 2010.

Support from Dave Hughes (Punk rock political folk music) and Foxhunting (indie folk songs)

  4. Hiya,

I'm looking for a band to open a show that I'm organising in Aberdeen. The headline act is Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun (last seen in Aberdeen supporting Frank Turner at the Lemon Tree), and I'll also be playing. Its Saturday 30th of April and at Drummonds.

We were recommended to try get Amber Wilson, but she's not available on that date.

So, who else should we try? We're both out of towners, so a local band with some degree of pull would be ace!

Please email me through dave-at-davehughesmusic.co.uk (replacing the -at- with an @ to fool the spammers!)

    Dave
