  1. Probably just because of Aenima and Neurosis, but anyway. the more I think about it, the more I think it's really 1984.

Black flag - Live 84/Slip it in EP/My War

Talking heads - Stop making Sense

Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring

Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

Eno/Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

    Husker Du - Zen Arcade

and I'm sure tons more punk I'm forgetting..

Thought Filth was that year too, but looks like it was 83. regardless, this is a fucking boss year. so what do you reckon your favourite year in music/albums would be?

  2. 7. Limp Bizkit make gay music because they listen to Tool and Tool are shit.

    40. I hate those shithouse grind songs that just repeat the title a couple of times before exulting in a noise outro.

i think seven is my favourite; just the sheer bluntness of it.

thing is, just from reading the song titles, i figured they would be a grind band who'd just repeat the phrase a couple of times then noise out. are they not like that, or is it just self-reference?

  3. I'm pleased that he also mentioned that minker anthem "Angels" by The Robbster - how many times has that piece of diabetes-inducing shite been used at a death-by-neglect' date=' savaged-by-pet-pitbull, or eckied-smacked-cracked-to-death-during-school-hours kiddie funeral???[/quote']

probably not nearly as many times as it's been used at wedding receptions. 'here's one for the ladies' and all that bollocks.

  4. It was all a blur for me' date=' I forget setlists...

I really should take more mental notes...

needless to say, a great performance...

good luck with getting a ticket![/quote']

fuck it man, why would you bother with mental notes when you could lose yourself in tool?

thanks for the good luck, i'll bloody need it if i want to get a good price. ;)

  5. tickets, sorry to say, but I was on the guest list.

nice one. tickets sold out quick as anything for the london date, so i'm gonna be scouring ebay in the coming weeks.

they didn't play pushit or third eye, did they? those are my all-time favourite tool songs.

  6. Shame the dancing Tom Lea didn't get up on stage & give us an impromptu solo with the female back up singers. I thought the tables & chairs were better in place than not having them' date=' although maybe they could have been cleared back a bit before Ariel Pink took to the stage.[/quote']

i wouldn't have wanted to show them up. ;)

i agree that clearing the tables would've been the best option; they worked for dickson and belong, and the physical act of moving them back would've encouraged people to stand at the front for ariel pink.

But didn't you think he was shit? I'm confused.

i'm a fan of his music, and i enjoyed what he played; even done half-heartedly like last night. however, when a headlining act, who people have paid money to see, runs through through five short songs, moans about his monitor for a while and then pisses off for a cigarette, that qualifies as a pretty shit performance to me.

Anyhow well done for getting these artists to Aberdeen

seconded; i appreciate the effort that went into planning this night.

  7. what a fantastic gig' date=' I was a bit worried to start with, as they started with (rossetta stoned, if I remember!)...muddy sound, all over the shop, a basic stramash of a noise, then (once again, "i think") they played stinkfist, and boy oh boy was that good...from then on in, they played a heap of great tunes, and the sound just got better...[/quote']

what other songs did they play? i'm hopefully seeing them on one of the london dates.

as an aside, how much did you pay for tickets?

  8. i found three of the fat wreck chords compilations in the used bit of one-up the other day, so went for them. already knew all about nofx, propagandhi, 88 fingers louie etc, but was really surprised by face to face and tilt, who i've been playing non-stop.

also got the jam's 'dig the new breed', but on lp so i'll have to wait until i get back home before playing it. that's if the an albatross album ever leaves the turntable...;)

  9. You would have danced to Ariel Pink?! Wow!

i probably would've tried' date=' and looked like a prat.

even if not, the layout discouraged people from standing close to the stage, and did set the tone for a sit-down dinner-type performance. i imagine pink would've been more inclined to actually perform a bit (if you watch the footage of some of the other shows on this tour, he's bouncing around all over the place, where as last night he barely even faced the audience) if there'd at least been people standing by the stage nodding their heads a bit.

Gareth Dickson and Belong were both very enjoyable. I'd have to say that Ariel Pink was one of the stranger performances I've ever seen. It was, as has already been pointed out, what many would conventionally describe as 'shit'. But still, it was kind of punk in a strange sort of way. The bloke clearly doesn't think much of his audience - almost Mark E Smith like. Without actually being as good obviously. Still, I reckon that but for his arsing about trying to sort out the monitors, I was mostly entertained by what little he and his entourage played.

i've always heard the same thing about the fall's shows as pink's; that some shows will be like tunnels last night, and some shows you'll get something truly special. the thing is, people are playing money to see the guy, and even if he's not getting the reaction he wants, he should have the balls to play through that for the people that were enjoying the show, and not piss off after five songs because he wanted a cigarette. i did really like what he played though, especially 'grey sunset'.

  10. so i don't mean to try and rub in how shit ariel pink was tonight, but a quick question: why were there tables set out on the floor, all but killing any chance for a dance tonight? it just seemed a very odd decision, and it sort of killed the atmosphere of the main act before it had even started.

i did enjoy both belong and gareth dickson though. arrived towards the end of the latter's set, it's maybe not the sort of music i would buy, but what he played was very delicate, and very precious, a bit like a one-man guitar equivilant of lullatone i guess, with how gentle and precise all the plucks were. belong fucked with my ears, and i really enjoyed them.

  11. That's what I was trying to get at earlier...it's all the same now' date=' why pick on a quine fae Macduff when the majority of the music biz is like that?[/quote']

because she's an easy target, plus bono is a born guardian reader and they don't want to kill sales. ;)

  12. I must say that this is one very well written article.

I laughed out loud several times whilst reading it.

me too, but it seems really unfair to single out somebody like sandi thom, who'll just be forgotten in a couple of years. i agree with the rhetoric, but it's pointless when applied to somebody as unimportant as thom; why not go after one of the big boys like coldplay, robbie williams or u2 (who've been on auto-pilot, producing 'content' for what, fifteen years now?)

  13. The hardcore pyramid building and all the hardcore dance moves in general were class...

definitely, never seen anything like it before!

completely disagree with those who found an albatross boring towards the end; maybe it was just the dancing (the ministry of silly dances, someone informed me) but i was having a great time right until the finish. and then spent more money on the t-shirt, the new lp and an old ep. didn't catch the openers, but really enjoyed project: ven hell too.

pretty sure it was the best time i've had at a gig since mastodon in 2004; definitely beat out anybody i've seen since, even melt-banana and jamie liddell last year. fucking super grateful to anyone who had a hand in bringing them to aberdeen.
