  1. some fucking ace bands winning in 2007. i miss fiction/action.

And we miss you Dave! I wasn't there to collect the award and it's one of my biggest regrets to this day!

Of course, Dedalus and Kartta both deserve mentions as excellent Deen bands too.

I remember playing the Fudge awards in 2004 (?) with The Gloria Flaw in Moshulu, one of our first shows in Aberdeen as a five piece. The memories...

Bloody hell, this is a old account!

  2. One thing I always felt that one of the things that hindered Aberdeen was the lack of cultural/tourism facilities - even as a resident, there was very little to do in the way of museums, etc. Always enjoyed/was impressed by the City Gallery tho-good to see they have a Steven Campbell. And I did see his last ever exhibition was in a tiny gallery in Aberdeen too, so maybe I'm talking rubbish.

Mind you, you want to try living in Uxbridge in West London, then you'll really know crap!

  3. No problem sir! I guess I'm looking back a bit with rose tinted specs (doing that more and more these days!), but the tunes still definately stand up. That was a great really era of local talent - exciting for a young buck forming his first bands.

Very flattered to see people mentioning TGF and F/A. Another couple of eras (spanning Xcerts, We Become Less, Turning13, Allysha's Wish, Small Enclosed Area, Dedalus, Eric Euan, 10 Easy Wishes, Right Hand Left, Kartta), but some really great music then too!

  4. My vote would go to Copy Ha Ho as the best around just now. Saw them in London a few months ago and they were great.

Best ever? There was a period when I was at school in Moray when Aberdeen seemed to be the place where loads of exciting music as happening - Purple Munkie (I know strictly an Elgin/Forres band), Nero, Maple, Deadloss Superstar. Almost seems like a different time now - it was well before myspace, bebo, webs forums, etc.

Special mention to Hookers Green No.1 and Dedalus (though without me playing in them!) - they were both brilliant too.

  5. Hi,

Me (Niall) of Reasons are Red and lovely old Steven Rainey of Dedalus fame will be going head to head tonight (Wed 31/8) in the Belmont Cinema Bar from 9pm. This sounds like we're going to have a punch up but we're actually just going to be playing a couple of acoustic sets. (Sorry to disappoint!) We'll be doing our own material and some interesting cover versions (hopefully!). Should be a good laugh and a chance to see me and Steven doing something a bit different to what we normally do in our bands. It's free and it starts from 9pm. Hope you can make it!

  6. (this is the big give away) Primo "the only people who have ever heard of me are those who have read Song For Those Who Died In Vain on the back of Gold Against The Soul" Levi in your reading bitty.

I think it's a little wide of the mark to say the "only" people who have heard of Primo Levi are Manic Street Preachers fans! I know plently of people who have read his work and know nothing about The Holy Bible or MSP. I personally think that Holy Bible is very important album as it exposed those that listen to it other important areas of art. It's musical good too, but does have the odd hoorible GN'R solo shoe-horned in. "Faster" reminds me of The Clash, Wire and PIL and then this horrible Slash solo bursts in from nowhere!

  7. 'Reasons are Red pull out of another gig to play another gig Shocker'

    :nono::sleeping:

I personally would've loved to have played this show but we had a prior arrangement two nights before. To set the record straight WE did not pull out, rather the Arkade team (understandably) decided not to take the risk of putting us on when we had another gig so soon. Having just to been done out of 185 we didn't have by a promoter, we need to be careful about how much we can do at the moment.

On a lighter note, every one should attend because Papercutout rule!

  8. there was an awful lot of preening hipsters hanging around trying hard to look cool i thought.

I'll second that dave! Too many people who just wanted to hear what is cool at the moment (Killers, Bravery, Faux 80s new wave etc). What's wrong with trying to do something a bit different? We don't think we're great (we were pretty sloppy and there's still loads of work to do) but I don't think that a band should be immediately type cast as rubbish just they don't replicate a popular genre chord for chord! Really glad that some people picked up on the Dischord influence in us tho and one lovely man compared us to the Mars Volta!

Dedalus were great, really good sound and a charismatic performance from the Irresisible Steven D as always! Little Flames kicked out too, the girl had a great voice.

Cheers to Scott for taking a gamble on us! (Don't know if it paid off!)

  9. I concur whole heartedly. Nice to see some one in aberdeen who's actually heard of any of those bands! You guys put me in mind of pavement playing stoner or sonic youth jamming with led zepplin. The last song you played that night with the keyboard and the vocal effect machine reminded me and the one-up/dedalus crew of the unicorns, which is always a good thing. Will be checking out yr next gig. Also good to see someone who's in to Akiria Kurosawa's films.

  10. met edge today also' date=' was speechless[/quote']

Stood on the door in Ottakars and took every ones tickets, got abused for the fact his book was 17.99, wondered why he need to wear shades indoors. Couldn't work out what all the fuss was about...he'll never be as good as Papa Shango or Nails!

  11. Some combination of members of the gloria flaw will be there in the incredibly unlikely event we win the most missed band category which contains pratically all the most popular bands from Aberdeen in recent years. In fact, i'm worried if we do win we'll be ripped limb from limb by an angry mob, attempting to unmasks us as the Forres chancers we all know we are! But hey it'll be a night of rock, mores the better!

  12. See he can be nice when he wants to! Ha ha! Thank you very much for that lovely wee review, really glad you enjoyed it man. Great to see you all the way up from glasvegas and drinking for scotland. Looking forward to the stereo gig in march-we should be able to play the songs properly by then! Cheers to dedalus and the upstarts for rockin too and it all who came down with only a days notice!

  13. Just want to say a personal thank you the best venue in aberdeen for giving my band it's first ever gig in the big city (well it is when yr from Forres!) and inviting us back again and again (even when we seemed to jinks the place when touring bands we were playin with all had to cancel!). Thanks to drakes for supporting all my musical endevours-The Gloria Flaw, Reasons Are Red and Hookers Green- and helping me work the dj booth.

I've had some some awesome nights there- the night i saw Cat On Form, Politik and Turning13 with about six other people on a frezzing cold Aberdeen night was one of the best gigs I've ever seen.

This is truely terrible news, i honestly don't know how the alternative music scene is going to cope!

Thank you all so much. Looking forward to new projects very soon!

  14. is there a website where i can listen to some music by the other band supporting aereogramme? (i already know turning 13) (i have read their name about a hundred times in this thread' date=' but i still managed to forget it as soon as i opened this page to write my question...)

i'll be there anyway, got my tix today :)[/quote']

We're called reasons are red. We haven't got a recording done yet because we've had a few set backs over the last couple of months and now we've got a new guitarist so we're getting that sorted, but hopefully very soon. Please let us know if you'd like one when it's done. See you at the gig!

  15. I don't think the weapon are playing. Spoke to jamesy at the x-certs gig and he said they weren't doing it. Shame because it would would've made for quite a varied bill, which personally i like. We're still playing though! Degree exam on Shakespeare that day-not so cool.

  16. are reasons are red not playing this anymore?

Unfortunately not this time. We totally wanted to but we've had a few set backs recently so it wasn't to be. We going to be playing with Aereogramme in Kef on the 21st if anyone is interested in some more maraca-based dance rock!

Every one should definately head on down for this gig tho. The X-certs get better every time i see them. The Lucida Console are great guys and a really good band, great musicians. I ain't seen Flight in ages but I'm sure they'll be primed to explode and the mighty Weapon will no doubt fill our shoes and then some! I'm sure they'll bring the screaming rock noise we all need!
