i don't get it.

They're opening a bar a minute away from my abode in Camden. I'll be walking past it every time I go to Sainsbury's to buy cabbage. How exciting!!! (i hope. haven't actually read this thread yet)

I also like that you aren't afraid to give a band a bad review.
It's all fun and games until a member of Frisbee threatens to firebomb your flat.
-
Shady Adie!!! Antique brilliance! Far's the Buddah Crush reviews?!
I resent 'antique' - I was ID'd in Sainsbury's only last week.
-
i've made it into the b3ta newsletter this week.
might retire from the music industry now.

so what are you up to these days?
promoting and writing. same bullshit, different city. except this time i get paid for it.
as predicted by fudge (ho ho), i moved to camden and started writing for the nme (nothing much of significance)... for a few issues. dunno if i will again. depends if they want me.
i sometimes play in a very ramshackle band with too many guitarists.
i work for these Club Fandango and i do this is my own promotions thing wotsit World Domination League
got le reno amps playing in september and hopefully mitchell museum in october.

i dunno.

Captain Face were the local support.
Great crowd in for the Brut, probably the most 'up for it' since the London shows. Am sad to be missing the rest of the tour.
TOTP.

-

Bit strange. I reckon someone at NME.com reads the Drowned In Sound message boards as someone linked to this thread from there earlier on.
They do. It has thousands of lurkers. I keep forgetting that the people posting aren't just the ones reading.
Tis on FakeDiY too (apologies in advance if this has noticed later as i have clearly not read the rest of this thread yet)

sounding good. :-)

The Bis single was rushed out by Chemikal Underground after all the interest - the reason it only charted at number 25 is the bank would only give them enough money to press 10000 singles, which all sold out. If these rules had been in place they would have charted much higher.
how's that then? nobody was buying mp3s in 1996 - everybody was downloading them illegally off napster. the itunes store wasn't started until 2003...

it proves that anyone can do it and you don't need a major label to get your music out there.
yes, well, to be fair, indie labels have been proving this for years.
koopa went through ditto music, who 'assigned' a label name to them. they also had a well known pr company working for them (who probably advised them on when to 'release' the 'single'). the band - or their 'people' - basically just used the same ways to sell singles as a label would, with the addition of emotional blackmail.
i didn't think anybody would give a toss about the charts now that TOTP and CD:UK are deaded.
-
I've been told by several A&R and managers that they don't really give a toss what the CD looks like, or even the production, as long as it's listenable. It's the songs they're interested in.
^ truth. i've yet to meet someone who gives a toss about the packaging of a demo.
-
imho...
don't bother with a photo. if you're going to include a picture of yourselves then just incorporate it onto the biog itself (something that will photocopy well). very very very few cds get sent out with glossy photos these days. nobody cares and they go in the bin. we're all digital now and can just go to the band's website to see their pretty faces.
biog-wise, just something short to introduce yourselves. list any noteworthy bands you've played with and MOST IMPORTANTLY include all contact info/weblinks and a list of gigs you've got coming up.
don't bother wasting money with fancy packaging for the cd. just have your band name and contact details written on the cd itself and shove it in a plastic wallet. two of the best demos i ever got (union/bloc party and youthmovie soundtrack strategies) just had hand-scrawled cds. the bloc party cd didn't even have the song titles on. and the ymss 'biog' was just a couple of hand written sentences describing their sound and listing the gigs they had coming up in high wycombe...
if you're sending to a&r, then remember most of them have an attention span of no more than 20 seconds for an unsolicited demo as far as the actual music is concerned.

i bought it direct from the band with paypal via their website. even with the international postage, it still worked out a couple of quid cheaper than buying it from rough trade...
they write great pop music. YEAH.

Oh, I see. I wasn't aware he was associated with the area.
The Dickhead song is about east London, by the way [and pretty much a documentary]...
