Marijuana affects blood vessels

Marijuana has a long-term effect on blood flow to the brain, potentially increasing the risk of memory damage and stroke, research finds.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse in Baltimore found users have faster blood flow in their brains - even after a month of not smoking.

The findings suggest marijauna use narrows blood vessels, in way similar to that found in heart disease.

Details of the study are published in the journal Neurology.

This suggests that marijuana use leads to abnormalities in the small blood vessels in the brain

Dr Ronald Herning

The researchers tested 54 marijuana users, who smoked between two and 350 joints a week, and 18 non-smokers.

They used sophisticated ultrasound technology to measure blood flow in volunteers' brains at the beginning of the study and after a month of abstinence.

Marijauna smokers had a faster blood flow, both at the start of the study, and after they had refrained from their habit for four weeks.

The smokers also had a higher pulsatility index (PI) score. This is a measure of the resistance to blood flow.

The researchers believe the higher PI is caused by narrower blood vessels.

Abnormalities

Researcher Dr Ronald Herning said: "The marijuana users had PI values that were somewhat higher than those of people with chronic high blood pressure and diabetes.

"This suggests that marijuana use leads to abnormalities in the small blood vessels in the brain."

The research also found that after a month of not smoking, people who had been moderate users - smoking up to 70 marijuana cigarettes a week - showed signs of improved blood flow.

However, a month of abstinence had no positive impact on blood flow among heavy users, who smoked up to 350 joints a week.

Dr Herning told the BBC News website that if blood supply to the brain was reduced, then its cells would be starved of oxygen, and unable to function at full capacity.

"In the long-term one might see cognitive difficulties, such as problems with memory and thinking," he said.

He said it was also possible that using the drug may increase the risk of a stroke, which is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the brain.

There are case reports of strokes among young marijauna users.

"My advice would be to abstain from using the drug," Dr Herning said.

Research by a team at McGill University in Montreal has found that long-term cannabis users lose molecules called CB1 receptors in the brain's arteries.

This reduces blood flow to the brain, causing attention deficits, memory loss, and impaired learning ability.

Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said: "This paper adds to the growing body of evidence that marijuana has important and persistent physiological effects on blood flow to the brain that may have longterm consequences.

"This, coupled with the likelihood that marijuana uses are often also tobacco smokers, points to potential longterm risks for frequent users."

by all means.

I am aware that being fat is causing me serious health problems and could shorten my lifespan significantly.

Which is why I am trying to do something about it.

You wha???

No wonder they're fucked up.

But seriously, if something causes a chemically altered state of conciousness by it's use, you'd have to be a complete moron to assume there wouldn't be any lasting effect.

I suppose the argument is that everyone's going to die some day anyway, you might aswell be doing something you enjoy.

Life expectancy is twice what it was a few hundred years ago anyway.

Not that I'm condoning drug-use. I don't smoke pot, I just don't have a problem with those who do. It's their body, most folk are aware of the detrimental effects pot has on their body, it's their choice to make.

My word, some of you people are quite ill informed. Im currently developing some ideas about drug information and specifically focusing on the unjust war on marijuana. I reckon you should check out and get into www.pot-tv.net, specifically marijuana man and professor ziggy's shows.

indeed, so i got infuriated when i read someone had posted something to this effect "its no worse than alcohol"

yes, of course the two are comparable. Of course Marijuana should be placed in the same categories as these type of substances. whatever.

The detrimental aspects of the "drug" are really neither here or there to be frank (pun much). They are not substantial arguements whilst cigarettes and alcohol remain illegal, however the reasons are not due to the health elements of it and thats naive as smoking it is simply one way out of a plethora of methods.

Now i am comng from complete fact and medical approved knowledge. As i was saying, the "detrimental" aspects are lost through the vast amount of useful and ecologically/economically sound sides to Marijuana with or without Thc.

Anyways, blame Henry Ford for all this.:)

i smoke quite a bit and have for years. i`ve noticed a difference in my head too (yes, the word fried does spring to mind) but having abused/enjoyed too many e`s, acid and numerous other gunk its hard to tell what did what to my brain. if you believe all these studies you see, eating food(in general) is going to kill us too(story from last week in the news).

ps. having not taken much of anything other than pot and alcohol for the last 1-2 years IMHO e`s kill your brain much more than anything else.

I'd really like to meet the man (or lady) that smokes 350 doobies a week. How the fuck could someone afford that!? It's not like they could work to funded their habit...

And up to 70 spliffs a week is only 'moderate use'? Brilliant! I thought I was starting to have a problem....

Everyone knows that Coke is the way ahead.

.... and don't pay more than 40 a gram kids!

(Not bad for a average of 20 lines. Works out at 2 a hit. Cheaper than pills.)

haha.

did you watch that program aswell? fucking morons they didnt know where they were coming from with that figures.

I have been smoking for four years now and i have nothing but improved mentally, in all sincerity. I may have became somewhat more cynical and i may perpetuate a little more..wow..i think those are good things. The people that cannot grasp the fine qualities about the drug and its effects should not be smoking it in the first place. Just as people do with alcohol and cigarettes. We should have the right to control our own atonomy by now surely anyways.

The Henry Ford deal was more to do with his car lines and move/demand for fuel. Later on they discovered they could grow fuel and create relatively clean fuel through the plant..alas how could this be changed whilst the car boom was ringing in top dollar. It wasnt and thus made illegal due to fear, as with everything else. Short version :-)

And what type of marijuana was it? resin? grass? if so what kind of resin or plant was used? was this constant throughout the participants? was tobacco mixed with these "joints" was that kept constant? was it only smoking the plant or plant bi products? i mean seriously these are all factors which result in the outcome. Because if its eaten/vaporised or cooked the niggly health side of it is wiped entirely.

Its obvious that certain strains produce different levels of "problems" related to health. I personally dont see it and put it down to fear induction 101.

Just fuck off whining about the detrimental effects and harnass the fucking plant to its full potential. This study is bullshit, not new news and certainly bias. I fail to see the importance of this, there is a higher goddamn issue at stake here people and its not our health for once. I would rather justice as it were, liberty.

thought it was Henry Kissinger that was the driving force in getting it made illegal in the 30`s (correct me if i am wrong) :)

Henry Kissinger was a prominent governmental figure in the 60s/70s so yes you are wrong. People who smoke cannabis are just morons. I know a few people who do it and when they are high they are just utter idiots. You get more sense out of an obese person than you do with someone stoned. Legalising cannabis will add to our social ills, not improve them.

Just as an aside, I've only met two people from Westhill before and they were both idiots. Using your flawless reasoning, I have reached the logical conclusion that everyone from Westhill must therefore be an idiot. I also knew this black guy, but then he went to jail and I haven't seen him since then. Still, what do you expect?
