stuartmaxwell
drat moved to leeds and then split up I believe. "we get drrrunk....and fall down the stairs....". brilliant stuff.so many memories and so many good gigs, bad gigs, long nights, great laughs, great friendships, inspirational moments, visions etc came out in those 4 walls & from the people involved.when i moved to glasgow I was most gutted about leaving that place behind more than anything else! i'm glad people went onto bigger and better things, just a shame that the wee place isn't around to get new people's ideas and vision off of the ground! bless

AKA the brando
only saw one gig at the castlegate - which was Maple - which was nice. Then at the new Drakes the best night i had was when THEN CAME MUSIC were playing, support was a band from glasgow called Myopia who are now Hip Parade.Place was heaving, one of those nights when you were scared to put your pint to your mouth, knowing half of it is gonna end up down your top!Was just a great night really.Really liked the fact that there was nothing stuck up about the place, you knew that everyone had the same reason for being there. And you could just relax and enjoy your night.
ragudave
oh my god, Drat!!! how could i forget...wonder what those guys up to now? thats prompted me to go look!and yeah Opaque, how unexpected was that! for those unfamiliar, one of the guys, Lee, now goes under the name of Kylie Minoise, whom im sure you have heard ofaye Opaque were great, loud and so hard to recognise with those face masks - their set @ Drakes (or part of it) is available from Kovorox as part of a 4 CD boxset job. Opaque did play in Tunnels 2 a couple of years back, but I preferred the Drakes gig. OPAQUE - THE CULT OF SURVIVORSI remember Ballboy, Soulo, Bill Thomson's first Adeen gig and loads of IMP related gigs...Dave

Jim Stax
Why did drakes close?Because all you cheap bastards didn't spend enough money in there!
RF Scott
Friday/Saturday night at school often involved the 18.15 train into Aberdeen, a few underage drinks at the Station Hotel, then along to Drakes. Ran back to train station for 22.30 train home, sometimes the late bus if we were feeling daring. Happier times.
The Ghost Of Fudge
i remember a man, painted blue, with a couple of hundred inflated blue kitchen gloves attached to his body. he was just dancing beside the stage. looked great.Man Inc and Craig B were great shows. I also remember the joy of The Real Mackenzies. That might even be my favourite night...I mainly remember smoking a lot of tabs in the dj booth and playing with the stobe lights. ... Elizium was always fun to work on a friday(?) night...

Jim Stax
coincidence?I'm now back dating the pay you owe Drakes for standing in the DJ box smoking tabs whilst zillions of paying customers tried to part with their cash. Or take it as a christmas bonusIt's all Bri's Fault!
framheim
my favourite memory was casino's girlfriend he made in the ticket booth. that was genius.
The Ghost Of Fudge
and there was plenty (harsh and slighty cutting) art in the ticket booth bitty too.it's probably just as well the punters couldn't see most of it.
Lemonade
The sign over the lighters that said "How about a little fire Scarecrow?" was genius.Friday night lock ins with Nicky Casino, my flatmate and Brian Fudge were always messy Many nights I came staggering out of there at 5am. I hate the phrase "Random" but nights in Drakes really could be!Gig wise, Certain Death were always a highlight. The Dangerfields were always good value I'm sure I saw them like 5 times in the space of a year. Also I remember jumping around like a fucknut to some Finnish metal band.Apart from open mic nights, I was only at one proper gig in the old old Drakes on the Castlegate. Liber-8 and The Rejects, who were fucking ace.
burningbushhifi
All thanks should be given to Martin Bell for getting the ball rolling, if it wasn't for his persistance and dedication it would never of happened. Drakes is solely down to him. We started a night for ALL music (called Four Elements - combining rock, funk, techno and reggae) down at Cellar 35, which we quickly outgrow. Martin then badgered the then owner of La Lambada every waking moment until, in a fit of rage and desperation to get rid of him, he threw the keys to the cellar at him.Martin then set about the place, and the rest is history... Lemonade
Because all you cheap bastards didn't spend enough money in there! You know something, I don't think I ever did pay my bar tab.So..... Jim.... how much do I owe you?
Biz
Martin Bell pestered me to play drums for him in the Castlegate Drakes, I said, "OK of you're THAT good, let's go on stage RIGHT NOW in front of all these punters and play", he did, and it led to us doing about 3 gigs with The Visitors, I have reason to believe we did a lot more than three ,but we always drank Jack Daniels and lager and Jamaican punch and ting, so I canna mine much aboot the hale proceedings .Ha ha, he phoned me yesterday and said, " You on for 3 hours in the studio tonight?,THINK Senser,Ozrics and Pendulum". I though about it for 1 second and said "AYE ok". He said after the jam, let's go to Holland and get ripped to the tits and play some trashy club.I hope it coincides with the Fudge Mongol Rally ,I'd like to stalk them abroad with a camera and freak their heids oot with photos of them fan they get hame. Handler
I recall some great gigs in the Original Drakes, there was always something on, and friendly staff too. Some gigs I saw. Sidca, Cost of Status, The Needles, Maple,Deadloss Superstar,The Visitors,Hoodoo Zephyer, Adrian Byron Burns,Karloff, Jo Macaferty,Psycho a go go, Eric Ewan,Black Atom,Siren,Karma,Tar,Sax Sensation,Bug and Friends,Josephine,Arial, Aerogramme,Dovetail to name only a few. There were also Poetry nights, open mics, and Jam sessions too.Even a comedy night I seem to remember.I also attended some top DJ nights hosted by The Burning Bush Hifi, DJ Tony, The Northern Soul nights with Mike Copeland. I think I remember Sharon ,whom latter worked there djing a break beat set there at least once. The original premise I believe was to give an encouraging platform for all up and coming local musicians to gain experience and to get heard, as at the time Aberdeen's music scene was a bit of a clique and there weren't so many welcome stages.Drakes certainly put on a lot of local bands and acts that no one else would entertain. the venue was encouraging of all levels of experience and of a wide variety of genres. The first 2 years of Drakes was something very special to me.Many good memories. My special thoughts go out to those who took part in the fun , but are no longer with us to share our smiles as we remember.May they rest in peace.x

aberdoom.com
I don't remember drakes I do remember the first band I saw: Bonesaw: in drakes
Mordred
Aye i mind seeing Bonesaw a good few times in Drakes with there revolving drummers, im sure Sid played drums one night and Rob from Karloff was on guitar. If i mind right his amp head wasn't working. There was also Andys final gig before leaving for Germany, when Fluff (Korpse) and Simon (Inextremis) helped out with growls.Filthpact gigs were always a blast as was Vomitus's debut performance supporting Red Stars Parade and Bumsnogger The spirit of Drakes is what makes me put on gigs in Elgin. Fast Caz
Bonesaws first proper gig was Drakes if I remember correctly and I was dj'ing that night aswell.
