i honestly don't think there's anything i can say that hasn't already been said. dr drakes is my favourite venue in the whole damn country. i'm eternally grateful for drakes letting me put on two regular nights sonic deth monkey and valhella both for around a year at a time and they never once made me feel bad about my inability to pull in punters. my only regret is that in recent times i've not gone as much as i wanted but then i've not gone out much since i became a student.

so thanks drakes for all your support and for the great nights.

drakes finally DOOMED.

best wishes to all who sailed in her and with any further endeavors. please don't let this be the final death of drakes.

Hmm, there is sommit sus about this, i think there is something else in the pipeline, especially from Mr Jim... the cryptic lil messages in this and other threads, the natural progression and so on.

Time will tell.

Afraid not...

Nope... It's true, Drake's Ltd will cease trading, doors closed, lights off! That does not however mean that what Drake's stands for will cease. There are no hard plans as to what the future will bring but we never stop talking between ourselves and with others.

What I refer to is the energy that is evident these days in the city and how that alone should be enough for progress. Some times things have to end so that we can move to the next phase and that needn't, nor should it, be about only one or two people taking the initiative. We have a city full of great bands, musicians, promoters, artists. It is an extremely creative city that deserves recognition as such. But we all need to muck in!!!

EVOLUTION

p.s

I'm not being cryptic. Just positive.:)

Aren't you doing that the wrong way round? :p

Last night did indeed make it hit home properly how sad it'll be on Tuesday. Packed venue, great music, fun atmosphere. :(

Thanks for everything Drakes!

A unique place. Good luck to the staff at Dr Drakes as you were the nicest people. You all put on music, because you love music. Dr Drakes was THE venue where you could catch something different, where they'd take a risk to put on a diverse bill. Although irreplaceable, something good, I'm sure, will happen. In time..

right, let me start off with the fact that im fucking bleazing!!!

now, i met all my best mates after moving back to scotland in drakes. i met Dave Rowlands in drakes, who, since meeting him, has taken me roudn the world touring with bands. I met all of Filthpact, my current band, in Drakes. and since joining this band, we've had the best times of my life. we played our first gig in drakes. Vomitus as well, some of the best gigsd ive ever played, started, with meeting Rory in Dr Drakes, and also, our first legendary gig, with bumsnogger, in drakes.

I remember Valhella, the best club night in the world, not just according to me, but also according to countless others, including Stand-Up Guy, form Northern Ireland, one of the best bands i have ever seen in the british scene, except Narcosis(fingers crossed!!!).

Ive seen another of my favourite bands, The Dangerfields, something like 12 times in Drakes.

Drakes, literally, with no exagerration, has changed my life, and I cant believe its going to be gone.

Dr Drakes, Jim, Sharon, Leanne, Andy, Lana, Nicky Casino, Shaun(sp?), Brian and every other employee that has ever worked there, I salute you, from the bottom of my fucking heart. Thank you, for not just throwing away the fucking normalities, but also for introducing me to bands such as The Dangerfields, Karloff, Bonesaw, Severed Head of State, Afterbirth, Remains of the Day, Kietzer, Fighting Shit, Hero Dishonest, Homoconsumens, See You In Hell, Stand-Up Guy, Black Sun, Kaddish, The Fall of Boss Koala, Zillah, Broken Oath, Rabies Caste, Bonesaw, hearse crash, bodies, d-rail, fallen into ashes, destiny, psydoll and so many fucking others.

I think the only thing i can possibly have left to say, is I fucking love you, and it'll be like losing a bit of my life when Dr Drakes finally goes.

See you on Tuesday, for an acoustic version of a Vomitus and Filthpact song....

PS. liek i said, im fucking belazing, and i just spent about 10 minutes checking the spelling of that post.

I'm just hoping that the closure of Drakes is a mere palpatation' date=' and not a terminal cardiac arrest of the heart of the music scene in Aberdeen.[/quote']

If the Aberden music scene is of any worth, it should be able to survive with out one of it's main sources of outlet, which is what Dr Drakes was really, for all styles and genres... damn! :(

We all have time and energy to spare...what's the next step? Everyone who has posted here wants to keep the dream alive. What can we do?

Continue to make music, support local bands and artists, but make more of an effort to alert people out with the city, that we exist would be a good way forward. :)

whoa! I've been away for a while, and this is truly shocking news to come back to.

Since I moved out of the city I have not frequented a lot but I will miss Drakes. Thanks for all the great gigs you have put on for Wonderboy over the years. There's not another venue quite like it.

IMO The council should divert around 5% of it's Lemon Tree budget to sponsering/subsidising Dr Drakes. Although technically we are a competing venue I certainly wouldn't complain as Drakes existence benefits us enormously.

Of course in a town where local bands playing original music rarely get any coverage in the local press this is never going to happen... but hang on a minute - who elects the councillors? Us. So technically if everyone that's contributed to this thread put an equal effort into lobbying the council then perhaps something good would come of it. Jester?

Back in the old days the Lemon Tree was St Kays, and provided something not dissimilar for local musicians (this was before my time so correct me if I'm wrong). Later they took the concept further and The Lemon Tree was born, but on a far more upmarket and commercial basis. Drakes plugged the gap.

From the councils perspective now would be a good time given that the building could be purchased outright and with immediate effect. The only sizable operating costs involved are staffing, and the people already operating Drakes don't strike me as leading hugely extravigant lifestyles.

Just a thought...

Just wanted to add my feelings to this thread - we (Indafusion) will really miss Drakes. I don't think we've ever played a more friendly, supportive and accomodating venue.

Each of the five times we've played up there we've been made to feel really welcome by everyone and it's just rocked. Hats off to Sharon, Jim and Brian and everyone we've met at gigs. The Fudge gig last Thursday was ace - really glad that our last show there was such fun, despite the sad news.

My abiding memory of Drakes will be as a venue which really cared about the bands:

a rare, wondrous, sweaty box of rockus maximus fabness.

thanks all

gutted..had the pleasure of playing the old and new drakes and this is fucking shit. Sharon and co are a crucial part of the aberdeen scene. When i think of the music scence in aberdeen drakes is the place , the only place, that has any importance. sAd sad day. I hate fucking deaths

Very rough news. Drakes was about the only place left in Aberdeen I was still interested in going to gigs, I'm glad I went in the last 2 weeks or Drakes would have seemed far too distant a memory. It was just like your living room but with a bar, music and the occasional misplaced drunk who had wandered in off Shiprow.

I think my favourite gig memory would have to be seeing the Surfing Pinheads and watching in awe as a drunk, rather old man stumbled to the front of the stage and attempted to single-handedly pioneer a "mosh pit" to Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World.

Strange and beautiful times. It was good to know that when the seething, sweaty crowds of Lava and Drummonds became too much, Drakes was there, a little like Cheers but without the canned laughter.

Good luck and thanks to all involved.

Indeed, Drakes will be much missed . . . but, in time, something else will eventually come along to fill that gap in the music scene of Aberdeen!

I was lucky enough to have played my first proper gig, weeks before Drakes's closing (I am Dan Leckie - played on Thursday 13th Jan), so thanks for that and all the best for the future, Sharon, Jim, Leanne, and all others involved.

1 question - what's going to happen to the building now?
