Man, you really need to stop this one man 'crusty old punk crusade'.

Live and let live.

Vans Warped Tour is AWESOME! Fact.

Now go into that corner and listen to the exploited or whatever it is you like from the late 70's.

;)

EDIT:

And wait, why are VANS exploiting the 'punk' community? Allowing bands to reach a bigger audience accross the world (Oh wait, that's not punk enough. You have to play shit venues and live in a squat and wipe your arse with cabbage to be punk).

I think there are plenty of 'punk' bands on the warped tour who haven't 'sold out'. So why not drag your ass along there sometime and check it out? There are a whole spectrum of bands playing. And yes, some 'pop-punk' (whatever the fuck that is) bands too.

What is punk anyway? A cliche, nothing more.

Guess you couldn't get hold of the humourous intent of my post. But anyway.

My one man crusty old punk crusade? Suggest you run that past folks such as Dave Rowlands, Jake The Ape, or Thurisaz.

The Exploited? lol Fuck The Exploited.

Vans do indeed seek to exploit the punk community. They do so in order to sell shoes. They have no interest in the scene - what it means or stands for. They couldn't give a damn, just as they couldn't give a damn about the bands who play these tours. Are they gonna stick around once the current interest in punk begins to fade? Of course not.

And I ain't got a problem with bands reaching out to folks. The issues I have are with Vans, not the bands themselves. And certainly not with the kids who catch these shows.

And my pop at pop punk? Like I said, I wasn't being entirely serious.

I know you weren't being entirely serious.

Either was I.

Did you not note my ';)'

Seriously though. I fail to see how Vans are exploiting anyone. Vans Warped tour has been running for 10 years now, and I can't see the tour stopping anytime soon. It's a varied bill every year and constantly rotates. I mean last year when I was over bands like poison the well and thrice were on the bill, along with rancid and more 'pop' acts like the starting line.

Vans have no interest in the scene? So why do they hand out THOUSANDS of free pairs of shoes/t-shirts/stickers/cds etc on the tour? Have you seen any of the dvds? Listened to or read any of the interviews with the organisers or bands? The 'punk' scene is never going to go away, and i'm sure Vans won't either.

They are also heavily in the skating/bmx sector, and 'punk' music has always been a part of this.

And it's time fo rme to go home now, so i'm not typing anymore.

peace.

:D

Just one point. They distribute free shoes, shirts etc so as to promote Vans, and so increase sales. And at the end of the day that's what it's all about - shifting product. They ain't doing it coz they're cool and are down wit da scene.

Sure punk ain't ever gonna go away, but folks like Vans will only associate themselves with it while it is still profitable to do so.

Bout the folks who play these shows - I love the Anti-Flag guys.

Anyway, I'm feeling kinda bad bout this now, so I'm gonna go.

This is the first I've heard of this and this rampant commercialisation and consumerism leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Using "punk" to sell fucking SHOES? If that's punk, I'm not.

Haha oh dear another one of these??

*waits for 10 page thread to come out of this*

Dear god. Guess you missed the largely humourous intent of the link. Sure an important issue was touched upon, but jesus, it was just a bit of fun.

The most important thing is that the picture had both ninjas AND guitars in it. Politics of "punk' is irrelevant.

You just don't get it do you? Did you not check out the altered pic? You gotta scroll down, read through the thread, not just check out the first post. And by the way, the thread is found on an anarcho-punk message board. So politics irrelevant? Not at all.

aside from the 'questionable punk ethics' of the vans warped tour, my main issue with it is that every single band on it is fucking awful. and varied bill? yeah - some shit mall emo bands have crept onto it in the last year because...well, you know why

Anti-Flag aside, I'm pretty much with you there. And yeah, the bill ain't that varied. Sure, ya got folks such as The Casualties, but on the whole most of the acts on the bill just follow a standard formula.
