The brand new Pictish Trail album is called FUTURE ECHOES, and it will be coming out on Lost Map / Caroline International on 9th September 2016. And then he’s going on tour. AND playing at The Tunnels. What a time to be alive. Something of a sonic hermit, Pictish Trail has spent the past few years tucked away in his caravan on the Hebridean isle of Eigg, feverishly working on the follow up to Secret Soundz Vol. 1&2, his critically-acclaimed double album of DIY electronic folk-tinged croft pop, released in 2014. Now Spring has sprung, Pictish has emerged with a new clutch of songs, his most confident and accomplished sounding yet. On latest audio-postcard-single Far Gone (Don’t Leave): “This track is a tip of the hat to Fargo, my favourite film (and favourite telly series now),” says Johnny. “The song is about paranoia, the fear of being caught, and how that pushes people into desperate situations. I started writing it for a Coen Brothers tribute show that I took part in a few years ago. Alongside guitarist and singer, John B McKenna, are Andrew Cowan (guitar and backing vocals), Susan Bear (bass), and Keith Smith (drums), all providing dexterous and intuitive accompaniment. F A M I L Y, the band’s 2013 release was recorded in a week in Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts. The album has been worked over with love and unfettered imagination. Monoganon’s raw talent is barely harnessed and pinned down over the rush of these nine songs. Within the dynamism is an inspiring spontaneity that conveys a bold and beautiful approach to song-writing. An abstract expressionist spirit haunts the recordings as the process of creation seems to be crystalised in each perfect piece of music. The songs, with shifting time signatures and unpredictable structures are laced with ethereal vocal lines that climb and wind to add to their dream-like quality. John’s voice glides along over the chaos, like another instrument and the harmonies are otherworldly. If you are lucky enough to get to one of Monoganon’s rare live shows, (john lives in Malmo, Sweden, while the rest of the band reside in Glasgow) then you should prepare yourself to bear witness some of modern pop’s hottest avant-garde filth, as Lost Map’s sexiest band wow you with an intoxicating display of musical innovation. “A GLORIOUS CURVEBALL...
