Spoonie
Sad to read this weekend of the passing of William McIlvanney, one of my favourite authors and someone whose writing I'd recommend to anyone, especially anyone from or familiar with Scotland. For those not aware of him, he's most well known for the Laidlaw trio of books about the Glasgow-based detective which were a huge inspiration for Ian Rankin's Rebus (and if you ever read the two series of books, it's not so much as inspiration as straight lift and shift from Glasgow to Edinburgh) but his other books (Doherty, The Big Man, The Kiln) are, in my view, even better. The way he writes about the country and its reputation, challenges and especially its people is so eye-opening and engaging. Really powerful stuff and well worth a read. Any other fans on here? Spoonie
I've not read much of Hugh's stuff so I'll need to seek some out. I suspect there'll be an archive of it somewhere
