They've moved to Crown Street under a new name, which I can't remember or seem to google search.  Opens fairly soon, I think.

Phew, great news - thanks!

It's great to have somewhere local that you can trust for a guitar setup, amp repair etc. Not to mention their enthusiasm and knowledge - that goes a long way in convincing people not to default to buying everything online.

Has Aberdeen been Starbucksed to death yet? There's a new Starbucks opening up in Dublin this week which is the 49th Starbucks in Dublin and the 21st in the city centre. It's fucking nuts. On Westmoreland Street there are two literally across the road from each other.

Blanchardstown shopping centre has 4 Starbucks.

Starbucks are located in the following locations: St Nicholas Centre, Upperkirkgate, Union Street, Union Square, Holburn Junction, Old Aberdeen (University of Aberdeen), Prime Four Business Park. So 7 locations. They are also planning to open a Drive Thru Starbucks in Altens.

That's a pub I've never been in.

It's always seemed a bit 'Clansman' with the "pie&beans £3" sign in the window. I've heard it was great for gigs back in the day but it reopened a few years ago, dweller played a gig then it was always just a doorway I took a wide berth of so I didn't bump in to old smokey drunk folk.

The Garage are getting new flooring put in despite the club seeming underused. It was thought it was go up in a insurance claim further down the line but this means there is now hope.

Underdog which opened where Snafu used to be is worth a look. It was busy when I went past on Cartel Tuesday's. Brewdog bottles for £2.50.

If anyone was wondering where people go on Tuesday's when out now-a-days. It's Carwash Tuesday's at Underground as Rascals at Babylon. Prohibition normally does good business too.

Is there anything left in the Academy?

Shop wise Enigma and Concept (previously 2 units now down to 1), Jack Wills (enter by Schoolhill). Costa Coffee in there seems to do good business especially with Robert Gordon College pupils. Bar wise Old Schoolhouse (enter via Little Belmont Street), Rye and Soda, Bosin. Restaurant wise Nando's (enter via Belmont Street) and Wagamama (which is closing down). There is a new Cuban bar from the same company as Revolution set to open where Wagamama will vacate.

Did The Academy ever have a heyday? What was in it when it opened?

I don't remember it ever having a heyday per se, I never really went in to it much, except to go to Enigma or Chi Bar on the top floor. Is that still there? That was a nice place. Good food or a decent bar just for a beer. I had a first date there once.

No, Chi closed down a few years ago. It turned into another type of bar restaurant but I think it's offices now.

Oh, I forgot to say The Forum and Stage Door Restaurant have both closed down. The staff from Stage Door were transferred to the new Dizzy's Restaurant. I was only ever in The Forum once for The Trickery magic show and it looked really nice inside. It's a shame that it has closed but it was so underused with the odd event every few months. Gavrillo club night was in there before moving to The Underground and dying. It's sad but in the current climate it looks like it will be empty for some time or used for some other purpose.

The Tunnels is still alive and have no draft options. They really had pretty much folded but had a revamp and now have regular club nights. Hopefully this stays alive but like everything now-a-days the market seems to be shrinking for going out options.

Build a bear workshop also closed. I remember getting a bear from there when I was quite young back when it was called 'Bear Factory', Oh well 2002-2016.

The Forum was a funny place,  I went to a few events there over the years, Vegas Nights, Salsa nights etc and it was always really busy but I always balked at the door price (£10) and the bar prices were unbelievably expensive. I also saw Karloff and The Rocketeers play there once, which was weird. It's a good size venue, could be ace if someone used it for gigs.

Looking at the facebook page it still looks alive but won't be for very long. An either 'For Sale' or 'To Let' sign has appeared on the building and it's website deleted. I guess it must be just running out the remaining planned events.

The only time i've ever been in there was a Biffy Clyro gig in the early 2000s. I got some horrendous sort of stomach thing from whatever they were /weren't cleaning the draught pipes with. It was quite a good sized venue for gigs though.

We used it for a lot of big Burlesque and Cabaret shows. The total venue hire came in between £500 and £800 (including door staff) depending on whether you wanted a Friday or a Saturday. Obscene. The price actually went up the more punters you expected, as they charge you for the cost of door staff with a mark-up. Our shows would usually sell 200-300 tickets, so we had to hedge our bets and get 3 door staff (one per 100 people) at about £100-£150 per head. Our shows usually ended about midnight but the venue always encouraged us to keep the place running as a clubnight until 3am, but if we did that they'd charge us the extra 3 person x 3 hours of door staff bill, and then merrily take in all that extra drink money from the punters! The folks at the venue were generally all really decent but I always got the impression that as soon as you move up the chain you very quickly reach a shower of leeching, profiteering shitebags.

And every single show had a couple of punters complain about drinks prices, which were also fucking mental. It's a massive place and must cost a fortune to run. The sound and lighting equipment were straight out of the 70's Disco era of hardware and in dire need of an upgrade, too. Running a show there with a full lineup of performers we needed about 150 people through the door at £10 a ticket to break even. Shame though, beautiful venue. Hope someone with deep pockets buys it and tries to make it more usable.

xx

Yeah, a lovely venue physically - we played in there years ago in a battle of the bands type thing. I think Mercedes, or maybe they were Lady Mercedes won it, with a cover of a Stones song, despite the strict 'no covers' policy. So for that reason, I'm glad the place is struggling and I hop it burns to the ground.

Was this a privately run venue or did it have council 'backing' ?  and where is it ?. I,ve got to say this is an interesting thread re the changing face of Aberdeen. I cant make up my mind if things are better or worse but when i saw the pics above i initially thought it was Union Street and it looked really cosmo - sadly, it was Dublin.Theres a few changes i,ve noticed recently. Everest Technology an IT supplier near Holburn have cut the shop in half, Not a bad place for my pc requirements and its at the South (right) end of town for me so i dont have to pay for parking. Well i am Aberdonian after all. Then theres the shiny building syndrome. The monolith behind the Capital shot up over night, I had,nt been in town for a while and could,nt believe my eyes. It sounds like theres a few people in the know here so maybe you could enlighten me as to what its purpose is. I could google it but frankly wont bother. Oil i suspect. Theres more out the Stonehaven dualer on the right just short of Portlethen and i,m guessing its the same Donside and North. Of course theres the huge weird round building at the brig o Dee which houses AAA i believe though that lay empty for a long time after construction several years ago and that was in the 'good' times. Now, with all these really cool structures lying dormant its beginning to resemble (on a smaller scale) the ghost towns of China.

Not everything has changed though, I was at the Moorings briefly last night having not been for longer than i can remember and i,m glad to say they still have dusty shelves and weird signage and really appart from the name its much the same as it was. However i will always refer to it as the Moorings and wont appologise for it. The big gym along from the Moorings used to be Valhallas night club. I remember playing there and during the first number, there was a massive fight with tables and chairs flying around. Last night at around midnight, i walked past and there were actually people using the facilities. Health freaks.

Of course the harbour has changed really for the better although it does feel a bit corporate with all the barriers and signs. You used to be able to get access along the docks no questions asked. I feel if you were to have a wonder around there now, even during the day, questions would be asked.

The Forum bar and club was privately owned by PB Devco which own various other venue's in the city such as "Babylon...The College...Soul...Soul Casino...The Bieldside Inn...Zen Oriental...Queen Vic...The Howff...So...Dizzy's". The staff from the adjoining restaurant 'The Stage Door' have been transferred to their new venture 'Dizzy's Restaurant'.

Location: The Forum was located just off Rosemount Viaduct on Skene Terrace across from the Central Library.
