The plook on the plinth award...

Aberdeen has been awarded the crown of Scotland's most dismal town http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-31095837

In my opinion a well deserved award for the city!

You only have to take a walk up the main street of the 'oil capital of Europe' to see what a state it has been allowed to get into. Empty units, pound shops and upper floors in a state of disrepair.

Will anyone at the council really take note of this or will they continue to plough forward with their head in the sand ignoring the what of the majority of the city and shire (who utilise the city as much as anyone) population want - a thriving city that we are proud to live, work and spend our time and money in?

There are some great bits of Aberdeen. There are also some horrible bits. Every city has those.

Union Street is Aberdeen's main problem. It's run-down, ugly and empty and as a result devoid of character. Union Square is fine, Marischall College is a beautiful example of architecture, the regen of Riverside is looking good, the beach is great, footdee is a spectacular wee anomaly, Duthie Park is looking great, Union Terrace Gardens needs work but is still pretty.

ACC need to look at modern but captivating buildings that evoke the same response as walking through the city centre of Sydney or New York. Unfortunately that costs more money than the architecturally sound but uninspiring glass monstrosities that keep popping up. The demolition of St Nicholas House was a major opportunity to help engage the public and reignite the love affair this city has with granite, at present though the current idea will further divorce the heart of the city from the people who love it.

Brechin has at least taken some meaningful steps to make more of its built heritage in the last few years - I've actually been quite surprised the last few times I've been by.

Aberdeen however fully deserves this.  :(

Its not the fault of one council though.  Years of getting away with fucked-up planning over the life of many councils has brought us to it and that is despite us having some fine advantages in some areas.

Is the award on display anywhere in the city?
