I don't know why I'm bothering, but...

Recommended Posts

I get Giles' point. There's a LOT of ignorance on this forum (not directed at anyone in particular) with regards to dance music (and its various guises) and that means when it comes to feedback/discussion there's a lot of 'it's not my thing but...' - which falls under the pointless contribution category as far as I'm concerned. That phrase has zero meaning but makes the forum come across as an us v them type situation where dace types see themselves in an uphill battle against people who don't understand their music.

I have a theory that your childhood/formative years have a huge bearing on your positioning in this imaginary divide. I've been 'into' dance music since I saw a documenatary about Carl Cox and the early days of Ministry of Sound - god knows when that was but I was young, about 11 or 12 I'd say. I bought a set of belt drive Numarks with some birthday money and flirted with various genres over the years without ever really committing myself to any. (I guess in a nutshell it'd go something like this... House > tribal house > hard house > drum and bass > hip hop/turntablism* > minimal techno > sold decks). Never trance.

* I know that's not dance music but the breaks/scratching DJ part was what I was first turned onto, which then became a love of hip hop.

Anyway, the point is I didn't really get into any guitar music untill later in life - my household was a strange mix of motown and cajun music so I didn't grow up with any rock, pop or whatever else. I liked a few things (the bluetones for some reason) but in my naive early-teen mind, I always thought of any form of guitar music as 'top of the pops' whilst I wanted to grow up and go to the Love Parade or enter the DMC champs. The blur/oasis > brit pop thing wasn't me at all. It seems so weird to think it now but untill I was exposed to new music as I grew up through meeting friends with whom I talked about music rather than football, that's the view I had. Fast forward a few years, past an awkward ska-punk phase, I'm into loads of different stuff both guitar-driven, electronic and otherwise.  BUT I still consider myself as someone who is on the electronic side of the fence in some weird way - purely because I didn't start out listening to metal/indie/rock or whatever when I was young.

I think the same may be true for a lot of people (of my generation) in the other sense - they started out listening to guitar music and anything electronic still falls into a category that they're new to even though dance music as a culture isn't new anymore. I think this divide probably no longer exists in the newer generation.

Its not quite as simple as that tho, much like rock music there is a very broad spectrum of dance music, i quite like some drum and bass, techno, hard house and i used to love happy hardcore, but that doesnt mean i enjoy all forms of dance music, which is why i have said what Tom does is "not my thing". Its not about it being a fight to get people to understand what your doing, its about what people like.

People have used the its not my thing in many band feedback threads and it doesnt go down like a lead balloon, so why with dance music? It just seems strange to get upset about a board of guitar band lovers being apathetic to a very specialised form of dance music.

I enjoy a varied musical diet. Rap, hip-hop, dubstep, dub, minimal, some electro, some d'n'b, some house, a lot of emo, screamo, hardcore, post-hardcore, (but what is) punk.

Some music I just don't like though. And due to a lot of the type of music I like not using this forum to get their music out there, there is very rarely a feedback thread I'll post in. Like I said, it's helping no one by me going "don't like it, not my thing"

And I can't even go "hate the song, but this parts of the production are good", to me that feels like telling a chef I hate the dish, but the way they cooked it made me want to cook something in the same style, just completely different ingredients.

You're right, it's not as simple as that but a lot of times it comes across as 'i dinna listen to ony unts-unts david guetta pish but glad you're havin a wee go at it loon' rather than anything insightful. Explain what it is you dont like or what you don't identify with or this 'not understanding' thing won't go away. Btw, I had no idea you ever refered to his stuff as 'not my thing' - genuinely didn't mean any offense and you seem like someone who would indeed contribute if you felt the need to.

No offence taken at all man, i just thought because i used it recently in one of Toms posts you may have been referring to that as one of the occasions, its all good :)

To be honest for a few dozen people out of a small percentage of people with an interest in music out of a small city, I think this site does alright with a broad non-specific coverage of music discussion. Sure there could be a bunch more people with a keen interest in UK bass, grime or trap, but they'd be just as ignorant and be as useless for feedback for djent or grindcore projects that could get posted up here.

Also some of my favorite posts and threads here have been those where people post educational topics about genres/artists that they like that aren't well known by the majority of members here. Giles has had quite a few posts like this, and that krautrock thread from a while ago got me into a shitload of music.

And in regards to the original topic of this thread, the moderation of this site hits a good balance most of the time, I suspect Lucky being over-zealous might be due to personally not liking certain people, but I'd gladly be wrong about that. Anyway this is weird and gross, I post here because it's just irreverent enough without becoming too inane, not for SRS BSNS threads. LOL

The site was far more entertaining when prissy metal guys got into bitch fights about who wailed the hardest. Somewhere along the way the site took itself too seriously as some sort of music scene oracle and stopped any such threads, in case anyone found the site and were appalled at the state of affairs. If anyone stumbles on the site now they will probably just wonder why the site name is such a fucking misnomer.

It's amazing how much someone who's musical background is chiefly a pop-punk-rock band can be so dismissive of guitar orientated music entirely.

I sold Tom a DIRTDRINKER record literally about 2 weeks ago.

Regarding the moderation here, it's pretty permissive and you all get away with way more than you would in a lot of places, you spoilt bastards.  Sit the fuck down and appreciate what you have here because there's only so much pissing and moaning that people will take from you ungrateful maggots when they're giving their spare time to this place, mopping up your potty mouthed shit whilst picking the roadkill spam out of the treads of the wheels.

A forum needs rules.  Rules for conduct, to maintain a pleasant environment in which to interact and to prevent alienating potential new users with cliquey in-jokes and "who the fuck are you?" attitudes.  Rules for organisation, so people can find things.  Sorry if you disagree with the structure, but in the same way as there's fuck all you can do about the location of the Music Hall, there's fuck all you can do about the forum structure.  Deal with it.  If you don't like the rules, think you're somehow superior to everyone else and that the rules somehow don't apply to you because you're so fucking special then go off and be special somewhere else.  I would much prefer it if you left quietly instead of having a diva strop, throwing toys out of the cot and calling the place for everything.  Either way you want to do it, you won't be missed, so why waste the time and effort?

If I typed that tirade into any number of online fora I would likely get banned and the post deleted before any of you could retort just for the sweary words.  Not here - I am confident that this post will remain, unedited, for you all to read and digest or dismiss as you see fit.

I've been here quite a long time, but I've kept my head down and contributed sparingly but I hope occasionally with quality.  I'm not perfect - I can be sarcastic and occasionally I've been downright rude.  I've sometimes apologised for it but sorry to anyone I've been horrible to here because I really ought to know better having spent many of my formative years in the firing line.  You should have a care how you conduct yourselves on here.  There are people who post on here that I would not like to meet in real life, based upon what they post here because I do not subscribe to the "get over it, it's just the Internet" mentality.  It's all communication, the medium is irrelevant.  Do some of your own editing and have a think before you spout utter shit on here.  Then there might be less moderation required, hence negating the accusations of overbearing, overzealous moderation BECAUSE THERE WOULDN'T BE ANY FUCKING NEED FOR IT!

Clearly I haven't been paying enough attention. Probably because all the Tuff Wax stuff I've listened to I haven't liked at all. So I simply don't comment. Where's his blaze of glory post about leaving the forums? Not cos I want to comment, I just want to read it cos it sounds funny.

what about a "you're a dick, no min you're a dick, min" forum?

srysly.

I used to love starting a fight on here, nae so much now- can't be arsed. I think it's an age thing. like most of the regular posters on here this site have become old. nuff said.

I only come here to update the sidca thread and look at gear for sale. that's about it. the chat is whack. If I wanted whack chat I'd turn off CSI and ask my wife about whether the Foo Fighters were betterer than the Jesus Lizard.

how come that Gordon Duffy thread ran and ran- it was a bit shit-and likewise shutterspeed- thought that shoulda been closed early.

but aye,

carry on.

I do hope you're not suggesting there was anything wrong with the GD thread? Can't a man heap praise on his dream artist on a public forum anymore??

I just couldnae get my head round how he never realised folk were taking the piss, and assumed he had issues. Picking on folk with issues isnae that funny. what can I say- I mebbe have a different sense of humour. !! likewise the shutterspeed thread...

but I suppose ye can't moderate threads just cause you think they are boring....or can you?

I liked zombie munch, and stripey. well entertaining.
