HummerOfIntenseEvil
Anyone can join in (please do).First reason: When he joined the Clash (then still the London SS), he basically said "this stuff is a load of pish. THIS is what we should be doing" and made them completely rethink their direction and rewrite their songs.I would love to do that. Join a band and say "You're shite. Do this instead" and turn them into one of the most important bands ever!I have a nasty feeling this may be replyless thread...
Untitled
I have a nasty feeling this may be replyless thread... i'll make ya happyhe was indeed a great influence to the band when he joined i could think of a few bands that could do a total turn around with a few member changes
Lawy Lawson:Attorney
"Lost in the Supermarket" may just be the greatest song ever. It's like proto-new wave. Love it!
Lawy Lawson:Attorney
That was mostly Mick's work' date=' wasn't it? It's a great song, but I prefer "The Card Cheat".[/quote']Not sure, to be honest. I really, really love it. Even the weird disco bass as it fades out. I want to marry it and maybe go out with "Pretty Green" by the Jam on the side.
HummerOfIntenseEvil
Lost In The Supermarket is indeed ace, although I'll go with Mr louie that The Card Cheat is possibly better. But the supreme Clash song for me is probably Complete Control, I'm So Bored Of The USA or White Riot. Larsen B
I'm too tired to go into the real reasons why Joe Strummer was great so i'm just gonna say he was ONE COOL MOTHERFUNKER! And Guns of Brixton and Spanish Bombs are the best songs on London Calling.
HummerOfIntenseEvil
*puts on London Calling for monthly listen*How much is everyone looking forward to the 25th anniversary edition? The demos and DVD look brilliant. Hope they don't charge too much for it' date=' I'm skint.[/quote']it depends what they're gonna be putting on this DVD. I've already got Westway To The World on video (restrained myself from rebuying it on DVD), The Essential Clash DVD and Rude Boy DVD... I'm always a bit skeptical about reissues. The reissue of The Holy Bible by the Manics is nearer the top of my shopping list though.
Lins
Joe strummer got Allen Ginsberg on stage. And to help em play with some lyrics. That is GOOD.
Guest allsystemsfail
Thought everything The Clash put to vinyl from and including London Calling sucked. And Combat Rock? Even Joe hated it. Loved Give 'em Enough Rope. Their debut ain't bad either. Favourite track from the guys? Complete Control.

Mick and Paul were members of London SS, a band that also included Tony James. James would later join with Billy Idol - a co-member with Chelsea, to form Generation X. They'll send you a link to get the CDs at an offer price. I use that link to order all my stuff from them.Once thing, though - only order one CD at a time as if you order a CD at the cheap price then the second CD will be full price. You may need to clear cookies if you're returning to the link over & over again.I use it all the time and most CDs are costing me 7.49 rather than the usual 8.99. Guest allsystemsfail
Not even mentioning Cut The Crap...While it's true that a lotta folks hated Cut The Crap, I actually quite liked it, preferring it over London Calling. Guest allsystemsfail
I actually saw Joe perform here in Aberdeen in 1988 at the Northern Hotel. The show was arranged by a then friend of mine, it part of the Class War Federation's Rock Against The Rich tour - a tour that Strummer headlined. HummerOfIntenseEvil
Apparently it's a Don Letts directed affair featuring footage of the recording sessions' date=' archive material and new interviews with Jones and Simonon. There's a whole disc of unreleased takes and unheard sons as well. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing...I bought the Velvet Underground box set for the same reason. What's on the Holy Bible reissue?[/quote']Dunno yet. It was supposed to be getting released about the same time as the Definitely Maybe reissue. But, surprise surprise, all attention is on that piece of pish. And the Manics website has only just acknowledged that they're releasing a single and album soon, even though everyone's known about them for weeks. However, being obsessed with all things THB-era manics, I will buy it the second it's out.The London Calling one sounds like it'll be worth purchasing too by what you're saying. Guest Jake Wifebeater
Even last week's Socialist Worker had the centre spread as a tribute to Joe Strummer. I love the paper, but they don't have a clue when it comes to music. That's not to take anything away from Joe, it's just that they cite bands as Rage Against The Machine and the Libertines as part of "today's new breed of angry, young bands." I wish they'd stick to the politics.
