Guest
After One-Up's demise, I was wondering where is your favourite place to buy musical related items that isn't a chain store. Keeping it Scottish as would be cool but I'm nae too fussed about the locality. This can be equipment, mp3's, vinyl, cd's, merch, fanzines. Whatever. Some good suggestions (Boomkat) etc in the other thread. So where do you go for independent music-related stuff?Personally I always like to stop by Avalanche records whenever I'm in the capital, and have bought stuff from Black Lake and Tuff Wax records locally, both vinyl and merch. Skacel
Now that One Up is no longer, I'll probably end up buying most of my music online from Banquet Records . I'm pretty sure they are an indie store. They are based near London. In person, either Avalanche in Edinburgh (is it still open?) or what used to be Avalanche in Glasgow. Guest E.C
Avalanche in Edinburgh is closing/closed.All Ages Records in Camden is a mind-bogglingly good independent record store, but I don't think they have an online store, and I know you're not a fan of London. However, you could call and ask if they have A,B,C and arrange postage/payment over the phone?
Skacel
There's also Groucho's in Dundee but it's mostly second hand CDs and vinyl.
Mr Owl PhD
Monorail in Glasgow. Maybe the best record shop I've ever been to. Nice cafe too, and they have some great gigs from time to time.
colb
Unknown Pleasures in Edinburgh is decent. If it's still open....
Jaaakkkeee
Now that one-up's gone I'll probably make a much larger effort to get it from bands themselves. And probably Banquet, discogs etc.
Soda Jerk
All Ages is and has been the best in the country for a long time in my opinion, but it's becoming increasingly harder and harder to justify using shops to buy records when you can get them directly from the label or the band for a better price without any guilt, as you're giving the money directly back to the people who made the record happen in the first place, so for UK DIY records, I tend to go to the band or label first and foremost. Labels tend to have great distros too, so whilst the physicality of the record shop may die a death, there are always options online and at gigs that don't involve massive tax-evading monsters.Art For Blind, sncl, Bombed Out and Specialist Subject all have great distros and put out great records. There's loads more. Support labels!
Surfer_Rosa
In Glasgow, I've never really liked LoveMusic (the place that used to be Avalanche). I usually got something from Monorail when I'm down that way, though I'm not sure if I'm just imagining it or if they their stock is significantly thinning out recently. Not sure if that has anything to do with Fopp expanding their vinyl and secondhand sections, though I expect at least one if not both of the Glasgow shops will be getting shut down soon.I do try and get smaller releases directly, had good experiences with Holy Roar and Art for Blind especially. Plus getting stuff directly from bands or labels often lands you with a bunch of extra freebies along with your order.
