Laptop vs Macbook

Lemonade

Recommended Posts

I use a Macbook. Personally, I love it, but I completely understand that it's not ideal for everything.

I think it's definitely worth what I paid for it, anyway.

On the issue of Ubuntu - I once tried to dual-boot with Ubuntu on this laptop, then the installation process stuck, then my hard drive corrupted. Safe to say I'm not a massive Linux fan...

From my time with Linux it just feels like a watered-down Windows anyway. But I'm definitely not tech-savvy enough to make it work.

I am in a similar position. I need a good laptop for work (must run Powerpoint, Word etc, although I know Macs can do that) but it also needs to run as a replacement to my 8 track. I currently have a lend of a PC laptop with Cubase 5 and the whole thing is a complete fucking mystery, which is starting to make me think that garageband is all I need...educational discount too...hmm. WHY CAN'T DAWS BE SIMPLE? Sob.

I have a laptop in need of replacement too, but I'd never by a mac, purely because of the price. My current Fujistu was a shop model in Dixons/Currys/somewhere and cost me about £300/400. I run hunners and hunner of stuff on it. All the usual things (Office - I use excel, word and outlook religiously), Adobe CS (I do a fair bit of design stuff with Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign), am an internet fiend (downloading music, uploading lots of video, hunners porn, hunners other mince), lots of video editing for the american football team, etc.

The only thing that's really wrong with my current laptop is that it's become clogged with so many software applications being installed and deleted over the years and the hard drive is partitioned, so the C: drive is almost full but there's plenty space on other half of the partition. Most of my stuff lives on a portable external hard drive, so what I think I might do is move the last of the stuff there, wipe the HDD and start again, demoving the partition so that it gives it a bit more life. It's one of those things tho, where I'd really need to be in the mood to do it; listing all of the software I need to keep, wiping, starting again and installing everything bit by bit. I'm not even sure I have a Windows disk anywhere.

Even though I have a Macbook and have done lots of recording with Garageband I would probably say "don't waste your money".

With the price difference you could probably get something like Ableton or Logic (I think Logic's available on PC as well? Maybe not) and it'd still be, in total, less than a Macbook.

Up to you like! As I say, I love Macbooks but not convinced they'd be the thing for you.

The Apple Store are remarkably good at helping you make up your mind - they don't aim to make you buy something, they'll evaluate your needs and so on to see if a Mac would be the thing for you.

Ableton suite's about 800 quid though.

The DAW costs more than the laptop? What does Ableton do? Write the songs for you? Fuck paying that much for something that just captures the sound. My Yamaha amp came with Cubase and my recordings sound no better or worse than when I use the very cheap and pretty basic Mixcraft, which I think costs about £50. Mixcraft is mint.

£300 for Ableton 8. No harm in trying before you buy a product, could take you years but then if you can afford it and use it a lot just buy it.

I bought a Macbook Pro last year and I really like it. Takes a little while to get used to the differences but for me, I've found it a lot easier to set things up than any PC I have owned. Although it is very expensive it is extremely high spec, the equivalent PC laptop would also be pretty pricey. It is well designed and feels nice. I am just about to buy a thunderbolt display as well which will increase the number of USB ports available for studio use.

If you do get a Mac, get the lowest amount of RAM you can and just upgrade it yourself, I just bought 16 GB DDR3 for 60 quid, that would set you back 160 in configuration.
