Endorsement

Recommended Posts

Hiya.

I'm thinking about trying to get some kind of endorsement with a drum stick manufacturer. Has anyone been involved with this sort of thing before? Is is nigh on impossible for an amateur to gain one? I've sent an e-mail to the British retailer of Los Cabos sticks (Canada), but have no idea if I'll be taken seriously!

If anyone has any advice, it would be most appreciated.

I've heard of amateurs getting endorsements before. I know a guitarist who gets dead cheap stuff as well. I figured it would be a long shot, but with smaller, emerging companies, they do have something to gain from giving a gigging musician some free - or at least discounted - stuff. Plus, my skills are through the roof. Mad chops.

I think if you're touring regularly, getting good gigs and some press you'd have a good shout at getting a smaller company to give you some free shit or at least a good discount. I assume that's more what you're thinking of rather than getting your own signature line.

Yeah, endorsement comes down to the simple "what's in it for me" for the company. If they can see you getting coverage and becoming known for what you do, they see a benefit to the cost. Otherwise they go from a guy who buys their sticks, to a guy who doesn't need to buy their sticks.

Yes, exactly. I'm obcviously not looking to get my name on a product (I'm not that deluded). Just some free shit, every so often, from a wee company.

Yeah, looking into it, I probably don't have the required influence; even for the smallest companies. Still, they might give me some free shit as a one off...

All the same:

Hey guys! Buy Los Cabos. They're dead good.

Just do a screen grab of your profile on here and they'll see how many likes you've got and you'll hardly be able to get through your door for the free shit they'll pummel your letterbox with!

You'd have a better chance if we got together and sold the 'Dallas Brothers' brand to them. As seen on Aberdeen-Music.com. 2 for 1 deals at the very least.

When we're not dicking about on Aberdeen-Music.com or carrying out our full time jobs we like nothing more than to rock out on the drums. We play fast and we play hard and there's only one stick that will do...

After the first Curators record came out, a tiny wee guitar string company offered me an endorsement. Essentially, if I said I used their strings, I got sets for peanuts. I didn't take them up, but there may well be a drum stick equivalent out there somewhere...

I know someone whose band is endorsed by a small American string company. I can't remember how they got the deal but sure the company actually contacted them. Strange as they only formed this year but have a very slick sounding EP and gig a lot. They get packs of 7 string sets for ludicrously cheap prices (think they get charged $1 per set) and they usually get sent picks and stickers and such like free when they order strings.

So yeah definitely possible but looks like there is as much luck involved as promoting yourself well to prospective companies.

In my experience companies will only discount stuff for bands or individuals who get regular press, and they normally only work through band management until they have a working relationship with the artist.

What is in it for the company? If you can give them enough reason to think that endorsing you would be beneficial to them then I see no reason why you couldn't sort something out. If you are a small scale local band with little press and only a local following though, then they won't exactly make too much from having you on their roster.

Even if they don't decide to create your own signature drumstick, you may be able to get a few freebies or discounted prices for promoting them.

My thinking was that while Fender have zillions of customers who'll buy just about anything they make, the likes of Hagstrom are on the verge of obscurity. More people seeing their sexy wares, the better. Bear in mind that "heavily discounted" will still be profitable to the company. If you get 10 mates to but these HUGELY DISCOUNTED guitars because they are half the RRP, then that's 10 sales, 10 happy customers and 10 new sources of advertising that otherwise wouldn't be around.

that's my thinking on the subject, anyway.

Trying to think of anything endorsed by anybody ... that would influence me to buy whatever it was....

Nothing comes to mind...

For example seeing Carling all over Celtic or Rangers football strips would actually make me less likely to buy it ... that and the fact its shite...

Same for most endorsements even for people I admire...

Having looked into it all a fair bit, it seems unlikely I would have a chance of getting endorsed. You do hear of people at a similar level getting in with emerging companies though, however I'd hazard a guess that it is normally through people they know.

I never said anything about having a signature drum stick. That's ridiculous. What i was looking for was discounted sticks, basically.

Without getting into that whole argument about "establishing a brand" etc etc.. the merit for small companies would be the same as posting a pic in the gear porn or gear you want thread. If you'd never heard of Hag guitars, saw Joe playing one at a Das McManus gig and thought it was sexy, that's one mroe potential customer.
