Jaaakkkeee
I only heard of this band a few months ago and they fast became one of my favourites. Self-branded "Talk Music", they're something different, and probably not everyone's cup of tea.http://listener.bandcamp.com/album/ozark-empireThis is more hip-hop. But they definitely changed direction as band members changed...
Soda Jerk
This is actually pretty good. It reminds me of a more angsty "Why?"I don't mean to derail your thread, but based on the above, you might also like Why?
Jaaakkkeee
I really, really like that. Is this like listener? Hard to come by older stuff? Because I don't need to like another band that will take far too much money from me.
Soda Jerk
He's got 4 albums, but there's a bunch of EP's I've never bothered with too, and the guy behind Why?, Yoni Wolf, has done loads of collaborations with other people too, but those are mostly hip hop based, where as Why? is mostly sparse pop with talk-y bits. His lyrics are quite fantastic. It's all on Spotify.Proper digging the Listener stuff. I will indulge more. I prefer the less hip hop stuff. The stuff where he's just ranting poems over sparse music is pretty smart.
Jaaakkkeee
Yeah I prefer the ranting poems. The album Wooden Heart is a masterpiece.
Soda Jerk
What's the deal with his last few albums? They seem to be completely self released. Is that how he wants to do it, or does nobody want to put this kind of thing out?
Jaaakkkeee
I think it may be that's how he wants to do it. Because he's gaining popularity, especially after Wooden Heart and David De La Hoz.
Ross.
Saw Listener about a year ago in Glasgow and the whole set was material off Wooden Heart if I remember correctly.Very enjoyable live for sure, and really nice guys too. FOX
Listener sounds a little bit like what Modest Mouse would sound like if they listened to nothing but Aidan John Moffat for a year in a wooden box.
Jaaakkkeee
You know what's ace, you can add him on facebook. Whereas the drummer of We Start Partys has disabled that. It's like... Come on man.Not that I want to add the drummer of WSP as a friend.
Jaaakkkeee
By the way, what do people think of that Ozark Empire album? If you played it to me I would never have recognised that as Listener.
Woodsinho
The title track made me think of early Beck. That might not be an accurate reference to people outside of my head but it is not 'a bad thing'.
FOX
Fallen in love with Listener, can't really afford to blow a heap of money on their records though, boo!Which do you recommend - Struggleville or Wooden Heart?
Jaaakkkeee
Wooden Heart. It's one of the best albums I've ever heard.
FOX
Wooden Heart. It's one of the best albums I've ever heard.Got both of them. Actually liking Struggleville a lot better, a lot more rough-around-the-edges, if you know what I mean. Wooden Heart isn't to be sniffed at neither; Glaciers and Bridges are both smashing songs, not a fan of Wooden Heart the song like. Ozark Empire is still the best thing ever. Jaaakkkeee
Wooden Heart is one of my favourite tattoos ever. And the influence for my next tattoo, if I ever get it.
FOX
Honestly, I'm randomly singing "HAVE YOU GOT A HEADACHE? COLD OR ANEURYSM?" out loud while making tea or playing FIFA. It's quite scary.
Jaaakkkeee
He's just awesome. European tour lined up for this year. I hope he comes to Shcootlund.
xDamerx
Funny enough I was found out about Listener last night and was listening to his stuff on Facebook when I found this thread! He's awesome! You might like a guy called Astronautalis, he's a lot more hip hop, but his stuff musically is totally different. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl1kwoChjGc
colb
Saw listener in leeds tonight. New album is going to be awesome.
Old Gold
I dig this. It's a bit like The Hold Steady without massive rock hooks.
