FAO: Computer nerds - I need you. Please?

I'm having major connection issues at the moment.

I have three devices that connect wirelessly to my (Sky) router. My work laptop, my desktop computer and my mobile phone.

Both my laptop and phone get speeds of close to 2Mbps (checked using Speedtest.net), however my desktop computer will never get more than about 0.3Mbps. Why? It's absolutely doing my head in. There's nothing bandwith-intense running in the background or anything like that.

Is it possible my wireless connector thing is ballsed? Is there likely to be some kind of malware/virus running in the background that's affecting the speed? I have recently run Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D, and AVG runs a scan every day - none have found anything of note.

Your help is much appreciated. Watching 'YouTube videos' has become a major issue. :(

Definitely sounds like an issue with your wireless rather than your PC. How old is your wireless adaptor for your desktop? Have you tried swtiching the channel your wireless is on or does the sky hub auto check for the best channel?

Adaptor is about a year old, as is the PC.

I don't know what you mean about switching the channel... how would I go about checking that? Thanks!

Hmmm you will have to access your router through your computer or wireless, there should be a menu you can access and change the channel, i had a similar problem a few years ago with my laptop always getting slow speeds, changing the channel sorted it out. This page seems to give instructions, hopefully it helps.

There's a guide to Sky router settings here:

Try plugging an ethernet cable between your PC and the router. If your speed improves then that confirms it's a wireless issue. Changing the channel would be a good first course of action to try and improve things. If it's set to channel 1 and you're in a built up area (like a block of flats) then you could be competing with a lot of traffic on that channel.
