Just curious about the process of scientific research.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I assume that there are limited resources available to the scientific community. In such circumstances I would have thought that their time could be better spent devoted to getting rid of, say, herpes.

I'd certainly be grateful.

I would think that this research is part of a process into something more worthwhile, and that the Scotsman has picked this up as a "fun" story to fill column inches. Looking at a lot for scientific research superficially can make it look frivolous, but I'd be confident that whatever is being looked at here is more than letting Scottish men know that they have bigger stroops than the English.

never trust a "science" story printed in a newspaper. it's usually misinterpreted information or created as a pr exercise.

if you're really interested in the process read "Bad Science" by Ben Goldacre, a brilliant book which helps explain how the scientific method should be applied and how it is usually not applied or interpreted badly by quacks, cowboys and journalists.

I'd guess the main purpose of this story would be to draw attention to the urology department to try and get funding for more important research. but that's just a guess. it could also be funded by viagra or something like that.

what is interesting is the idea that science resources should only be ploughed into "important" areas like cancer or curing certain diseases. how does that process work? how could we possibly decide what deserves research or not? Should the large hadron collider be shut down because the money is better spent stopping people getting a sniffle?
